I Don't Believe in Hugs
"Thanks for making dinner, Sparky," Luke says to Thalia. She's seated on the other side of their meagre campfire, pushing the glowing coals around with the tip of her spear.
"Don't call me 'Sparky'," she retorts, glaring at him through the smoke. He raises his hands in a gesture of surrender and apology. Thalia lowers her eyes back to the coals, the heat that they give off reddening her cheeks.
Luke sighs, and crawls over to the daughter of Zeus. Cautiously, he wraps his arms around her body and rests his head on her shoulder. She stiffens in his arms, but doesn't try to break away.
"Uh, Luke," Thalia stammers, "What are you doing?" She shifts uncomfortably, trying to gently pry his arms loose.
"Hugging you, duh," he states, "Is there a problem with that?"
Thalia nods, "Yes, actually, there kind of is a problem with that." She squirms in his grip, doing her best to ignore how he smells like smoke and pine, and how intoxicating that scent is.
"What would the problem be?" he asks, breathing in her scent of smoke and something else that he can't quite place, but he definitely likes it.
"I don't believe in hugs," Thalia answers simply, "I like my personal space, and my arm movement, and everything else that comes from being free of someone else's constricting grip."
Luke laughs, but removes his arms anyways. "Okay, Sparky, I'll let you off this time." He smiles lazily at her, leaning back on his arms, one placed casually behind Thalia's body. She pretends not to notice, but when she wakes up the next morning, she's wrapped up in his arms again. Luke snores gently, and his nose is buried in her hair.
This time, Thalia doesn't bother protesting.
