GODS Are Called MYTHS For A Reason

Grover Makes a Call with the Kitchen Hose

It sucked having to walk back home dripping wet in my bathing suit and no shoes. Even the warm California sun couldn’t heat me up. By the time we got back to the house, I was freezing and shivering which was weird because I usually didn’t get cold after coming out of the water. It had to have been the nerves that were making me so shaky. I wanted to jump into the shower but Mom said that we only had a few minutes to get packed and out the door.
“Why? It’s not like we’re going to get a ride to New-freakin-York within the next few minutes,” I complained.
”Don’t be too sure about that,” Grover said. He grabbed the sprayer from the kitchen sink and squirted water into the air. I was about to protest when he threw a golden coin into the spray and it disappeared. I was too stunned to object after that. “Oh Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow… Percy!”
“Grover?” a girl’s voice said. “Where are you?”
“Oh, hey, Annabeth. We’re at their house. Where are you guys?”
I angled myself to see what Grover was looking at. There was a pretty blonde girl that looked a few years older than me staring out from the misty water. Her grey eyes were focused directly on Grover.
“At the school. You told us that you’d been smelling monsters all week so we came here. What happened? There’s Mist all over the place.”
“She was attacked.”
“Oh gods. Is she okay? She’s with you, right?”
“Yeah, right here. Where’s Percy?”
The girl rolled her eyes. “He’s trying to calm down one of the girls. Charla, I think was her name. She’s freaking out so he’s trying to flirt and be all comforting. He says that he’s trying to get info but I know that’s a load of Minotaur poop.”
“Tell him that you two need to get your butts over here. We’ve got to leave now. Like right now.”
Annabeth nodded. “We’re on our way.”
I stared stupidly at the air where the image had been a second ago. “What just-? How did you-? Grover, what is going on?” I was pretty sure that I wasn’t hallucinating but I really wished I could blame the whole crazy thing on my ADHD mind.
“Like your mom said, we’ll explain later. First we’ve got to get you to New York.”
“Yeah? How?” I wasn’t in the mood to be left out of the loop any longer. I wanted answers fast.
“Amara, our ride’s here,” he called, ignoring me. Mom came down the hall from the bedrooms with two of her duffle bags and two of mine all bulging from crap. My mom handed me some shorts and a T-shirt which I put on over my now-dry swimsuit. She followed Grover out onto the back patio. I deliberated for a minute before I gave up and reluctantly brought up the caboose.
My eyes widened with I saw what was waiting in the golden sand. “You’re chariot,” Grover announced. See, that line would have been really cheesy if it wasn’t 100% true. A large chariot was parked on the beach with two Pegasi strapped up, one white and one completely black.
“Oh, lord,” I mumbled.
The pretty blonde girl from the mist was there with another guy. He was tall and lean with dark hair and green eyes and a mischievous smile. They were both about 18 and they were holding hands in the chariot’s basket. The winged horses connected to the old fashioned chariot pawed at the golden sand. Mom loaded the bags into the basket like she did that kind of thing every day while Grover greeted the couple. Everyone but me started getting in.
"Naida, we have to go," Mom insisted.
"No," I answered stubbornly even though my heart was beating a million miles a minute and I felt like I was about to pass out. "I'm not moving until you tell me what the hell is going on. I was attacked by some freaky thing straight out of the Twilight Zone, there are flying horses in our yard and for some reason I'm the only one freaking out about all of this."
"Baby," Mom started. She grabbed my arm but I yanked it out of her grasp. Mom and I hardly ever fought and I could tell how much the rejection hurt her but I couldn't help it.
"You and I are tight, Mom, and you've always been able to tell me everything. So why is this time any different?"
"Honey, this is about your father."
I froze, not sure I wanted my answers any more.
