Demigod of Prophecy

The Sun Shines Brighter in Philly

It took me only a few hours to make the trip from Long Island to Philadelphia. I was on the waterfront, at a park relaxing and thinking of my next move when I felt the change in the park and knew I wasn't alone. Turning around, I found members of the group who had ambushed my graduation just a few weeks alone.

"Perfect," said one of the guys. "She's alone. Luke wants her brought back for the master. Get her!"

"Apparently, you forgot that was a bad idea," I said to him as him minions advanced on me.

I needed protection and fast. Maybe fifteen feet behind me was the bay, but there was no way I'd get into the water before they got close enough to hurt me. So I called the water to me. I knocked some of the monsters back, but the human minions advanced on me. I tried to call fire to me, but I hadn't gotten the hang of calling fire and water to me so closely together.

Moving back, I willed my necklace to turn into something I could fight with. It turned into a dagger. Not my number one choice of weapon, but it was a magickal weapon and it became a dagger for some reason. As they advanced on me, I prepared to fight back. My father was right, I did have a talent of naturally learning any weapon put into my hands. The bronze dagger would be no different. The leader advanced on me, waving the others back.

"I'll subdue her. Watch how it's done!"

"Are you sure you're man enough?" I taunted him.

He came at me with a sword and I blocked him with the blade of my dagger. I kicked his knee out from underneath him and he fell to the dirt. Quickly, he got back to his feet.

"That is not how they train at Half-Blood!" he exclaimed.

"I guess you don't know much about me, then, do you?"

He lunged at me again, only this time his sword grazed my arm before I slashed his thigh with the dagger. He cried out in pain and backed off. His followers started to advance on me. I was so focused on him, I hadn't realized they had surrounded us while we had started fighting. I wasn't sure I could fight my way past all of them.

Suddenly, what seemed like green firebombs started dropping from the sky. Kronos' army began to scatter, screaming about Greek fire, which I remembered Annabeth telling me was extremely dangerous. I ran, hotwired a car, and got the hell out of that part of Philadelphia, trying to figure out what I was going to do next.

A few hours later, in a shadier part of Philly, I was following crowds, just trying not to be anywhere alone. In what seemed like an abonded part of the city, there were large crowds gathering. I found out it was a legendary wrestling arena and they were going to a show there. I didn't care. I snuck in to stay out of sight in case of monsters.

I was wondering around before the show was supposed to start when someone who seemed like one of the guys in the show grabbed me and told security he needed to talk to me backstage. The security guard nodded and let me follow the guy back. When we were alone, he looked at me with concern in his eyes.

"Are you okay, Selene?"

"How do you know my name?" I asked warily.

"Because my son prayed asking me to look after you. After what happened on the waterfront earlier I wanted to make sure you were okay."

"How do you know so much?"

"I'm Will's father, of course!" he exclaimed happily. "Will is worried about you and wanted me to do what I could for you. Not long after he asked, I realized you were in trouble here. I figured I'd help out and check on you, but by the time the coast was clear, you had cleared out. It took me a while to find you. Good job, by the way!"

"Thanks, I guess," I said. "You were the one dropping the Greek firebombs?"

"Yep, that was me! Perfect aim, as always! Not that your aim is bad, from what I hear."

"Thank you, Lord..."

"No, no. Don't call me that. You can call me Frankie here. If my father knew I was here and interfering because Will asked me to, all Hades would break loose. Try not to use that name. It's like its bugged. Someone says it and he checks to see if I'm actually there!"

I couldn't help but smile.

"Thank you, Frankie. I appreciate your help earlier, but since that wasn't my first round with them, I figured it was better to get outta dodge while I could. Last time, the Hunters were there for me. They offered me a place in the Hunt."

"You turned them down?"

"I found out about the prophecy about me and figured I needed to figure that out first. I don't need that following me around putting anyone at risk. Better I face it first, and then I can look at my options later."

"Artemis won't like that you were kissing Will on Half-Blood Hill."

"I never took any vows. I need time to figure this out. It wasn't fair for me to kiss him, but I wanted to and know that not all demigods come back from their quests."

"He cares about you."

"I care about him. We're friends and I really like being around him."

"Damn! Gotta go! Be careful on your quest, and beware of ice!"

With that, the lights blared so bright they blew and he was gone. Before I got the blame for anything, I grabbed my things and left through a back door. I made my way to a parking lot that had nobody in it and hotwired another car heading west again, my mind wondering why the god of the sun would warn me to beware of ice.
