Sweet memories
Delia
The plane engine drone lulled Delia to sleep for the first time since her mum went to Hades. Unfortunately for her, sleep meant dreams. She dreamed she was beside the fire, nine years old again.
She would ask for a story, the story.
"Okay Lia" Her mama would begin, switching between English, Ancient Greek and Modern Greek as she told the story.
"Once upon a time there was a lonely shepherdess. She had been sent away from her home in Delos by her family in hopes of her having a better life. She became a goat herder, spending her days in the fields singing in Greek: songs to the Gods. One day she was singing when suddenly a lyre also picked up the tune." She smiled fondly at the memories, "Then she saw the player, he was the most handsome man she ever saw and his voice joined hers and she knew that she would never hear a finer voice. They fell in love that day. He stayed with her in the fields singing every day and when their daughter was born she knew that her life was completed. But all good things come to an end...." She sighed mournfully, "She moved to New Zealand to work on a farm in Apiti and he stayed in America. But he told her before she left to bring her daughter back to see him when she turned 13."
"That's only 3 years 2 months and 10 hours away!" Delia's nine-year- old self would boast.
Her mama would laugh a laugh like silver bells.
The dream shattered like glass as the plane hit turbulence and she stirred, a new dream taking the place of the other.
