Audentis Fortuna Iuvat
Break
Days went by napping amongst tree roots and atop park benches. I never saw my mother again, she never commented on my defiance.
I found myself one day walking the streets of some city I couldn't name with people flashing me nervous glances. Of course, I probably looked like Pluto warmed over. A hot Pluto? A hot god of the dead...
I had gotten away from the camp, but the ADHD followed me wherever I went, pulling my mind away from my body to wander down unrelated paths. Distracted from where I was going with images of hot gods flashing through my mind, I tripped on a corner jutting out of the smooth pavement and fell to the ground with a loud crack. I tried to fill my winded lungs with air but a pain shot up my right arm, sharp like a rusty knife.
"Move, kid." A tall man grunted, nudging my back with the dirty sole of his shoe before continuing his way down the sidewalk.
I whimpered in pain and dragged myself under the shelter of a nearby shop, a clothes boutique by the looks of it. I sat there for hours as the streets steadily dimmed, clutching my arm to my chest. I could feel shattered bone jutting in lumps through my skin, the feeling made me nauxious.
My eyelids drooped from exhaustion and despite the pain, I fell asleep.
"Kerri?" A voice called through the mist of unconsciousness, a firm hand grabbed my waist and my eyes snapped open. I gripped the unfamiliar hand tightly, uneven nails drawing blood. The hand withdrew and Dakota cursed viciously in latin.
I pushed up from the concrete with my right arm, momentarily forgetting my injury, but collapsed back to the concrete as painful spots danced across my vision.
"What are you doing here?" I muttered poisonously, slouching back against the concrete wall of the shop and glaring daggers at th son of Brachus.
"I've been tracking you for days." He muttered back, digging through a rations pack as he spoke.
"Why?" I asked pointedly.
"Because I was worried." He shrugged, indicating my arm and handing me a square of ambrosia. "Looks like I was right to be, too."
I scoffed. "I would've been fine!"
He raised his eyebrows.
"Probably."
He raised them higher.
I shugged. "Okay so maybe not. Thanks for coming anyway."
He smiled, showing red -stained teeth. "You're welcome."
"I suppose you're going to usher me back to camp then?"
He shrugged. "Sorry, orders."
I rolled my eyes. "That'd be right. Help me up, will you?"
He slipped a hand around my waist and pulled me to my feet, guiding me towards a parked car.
"You can drive?" I asked.
"Yes." He grinned.
"Aren't you too young?"
"I never said it was legal." He answered.
Despite myself, I grinned.
Notes
Sorry it's short... again. I was sick and then I injured myself and at the moment I'm just trying to avoid needing surgery!I'll update quite slowly over the next few weeks since I've got about 6 exams crammed into next week. Study, study, study. Oh joy!
