Audentis Fortuna Iuvat
Brief
We walked from the business district back to the Praetor house together with me still reading over the letter.
"Do you know what this mission thing is about?" I asked him. "It sounds totally secret agent and all but what's the actual point of it?"
He shook his head. "I know but I'll let Catie explain, she's always been way better at it than me." He smiled wryly with a weird look in his eye as he said it.
"Is there something I'm missing here?" I asked suggestively. Praetors often developed romantic relationships and there were many bets placed as to the futures of Mark and Catie, not that I believed in gambling, of course.
"Of course not! I'm an open book!" He said quickly, unable to stop a blush rising up his cheeks.
I raised my eyebrows but let the matter slide as we reached the hall at last. Mark pushed open the doors but was immediately tackled to the tiles by two large metallic shapes.
"Woah!" I stepped back while Mark chuckled and let Audentis and Aurum lick his face. "That's disgusting!"
He pushed them off him and stood with a grin. "Jealous?" He asked.
"No!" I pulled a face. "Yuck!"
He laughed and looked around the hall searchingly. "I wonder where Reyna and Catie have gotten to?"
I shook my head. "No clue. REYNA!" I screamed and Mark shot me a look. I shrugged. "Worth a try, right?"
A clanging came from behind a door at the back of the hall and Reyna stuck her head out, her eyes dull with sleepiness and hair stuck out in all directions from her usually immaculate braid. "Wha- oh, you're here! I've just been... one sec!" She ducked her head back behind the door and we could hear the shuffling of crumpled papers. She walked back out with a stack of files. "I've just put together the things for your assignment." She yawned.
"And having a nap, by the looks of it." I added with a cheeky grin.
Reyna stuck her tongue out at me and passed Mark and I a file each. "The info is all in there but basically you're going undercover up Mt Tam as tourists and reporting back any suspicious activity."
I flicked through the folder of meaningless English words made worse by dyslexia.
"Such as..?" Mark prompted.
Reyna shrugged. "It's in the folder. Point is, it's just a pretty low key mission, should be quite fun, just make sure you're back within a week."
I nodded. "Sounds pretty manageable."
She yawned again. "Now if you don't mind..?"
Mark grinned and clapped her on the shoulder. "Have a nice sleep, kid."
Reyna looked like she wanted to protest against the 'kid' but walked back into the back room, still yawning.
I turned to Mark. "So it sounds like we've got a pretty fun week ahead, eh?"
He grinned and headed for the doors, bending down to tassle Aurum's ears. "I'll see you in the morning."
I smiled and followed him out the doors.
