Audentis Fortuna Iuvat

Charge

If you want a vehicle to ride into battle, choose a minivan. I swear those things are indestructible. We charged towards the black mass of monsters at full speed, going nearly faster than your average pedestrian.

The radio reception had cut out halfway up the mountain path and I could hear static blaring from the glove box.

"Can you get that, Kerri?" Becca asked.

I frowned and pulled open the cabinet, revealing a walkie talkie. 'Van I, calling van I, can you hear me?' Reyna's voice called through the speaker static.

I looked at Becca and she nodded, gesturing for me to reply. I pressed down on the call button. "This is van I, we read you loud and clear. I repeat, we read you loud and clear."

'Kerri?' Reyna asked.

I promise you that I did not swear aloud, I just noisily thought some rather inappropriate words. "Yes Praetor? What are your orders?"

'For you to get your tibus back to camp. I told you that you were meant to stay behind.'

"Uh huh." I said. "And I didn't listen. Let's face it Reyna, we need all the forces we can muster. I can help."

Her sigh came through the radio as an exaggerated burst of static. "If you say so, Kerri. Look, your van is going to be the first up the top so once you get up there I want you to double check you cohorts armor and weapons before forming ranks. I've sent the same message to the other vans."

I nodded. "Okay, got it. Anything else."

"Don't do anything stupid." She said grimly before the line cut out.

Let me just say that she totally jinxed it.

We rounded the top of the hill and half a dozen things happened at once. The radio began blaring another 80's hit. A dark cloud passed over the sun and the world turned dark. Something smashed into the side of the van. Our wheels left the ground and Becca screamed, struggling for control over the wheel while we rolled over and over. It wasn't until then that I really understood the true significance of seat-belts.

We completed two full 360° rolls before we came to a stop at the edge of the car park and the screaming inside the cabin ceased. We could hear thunderous footsteps outside the van and I unbuckled my seat-belt, pulling a quiver and a bow from my bag of equipment before turning to Becca.

"Keep them safe. I'll be right back." I told her, jumping out the passenger seat door and staring right into the eye of the huge cyclops who had ambushed us. I didn't hear the back door slide open behind me.

"Food?" He asked, voice thick with sheer lack of intelligence. If I'd have had to guess then I definitely wouldn't have said that the ambush was his idea.

I nocked an arrow and aimed it at his eye. "Demigods aren't very good eating, I'm afraid." I told the monster. "You'd get indigestion."

"Food?" He asked again and I sent the arrow flying but not before he stabbed in my direction with his spear. Time seemed to slow as he disappeared in a shatter of monster dust but the spear continued its deadly arc. A body jumped in front of mine before I'd even had a chance to think about jumping out of the way.

I watched in horror as the spear sunk into Tom's chest like a warm knife into butter.

He crumpled to the ground in a clatter of armor. Armor that still hadn't saved him.

He'd followed me out of the van.

I knelt frantically beside him and rolled him onto his back. He was still alive, gasping and clutching at the shaft sunken into his stomach.

His pale blue eyes met mine. "You're alive." He panted between gasps. "Thank the gods."

Tears were blurring my vision and I felt the uncontrollable urge to slab him. "You idiot!" I sobbed. "What have you done?"

He smiled weakly and lay a bloody hand over my balled fist. "I saved you." He said, no trace of tears in his eyes as he choked out the words. "I repaid a favour."

I looked at him in shock. "That was almost a year ago!" I'd rescued him from a pack of wild griffins when he'd first arrived at camp. "Honestly some chocolate or a card would have done! Not-" I choked back a sob, gesturing to his wound. "This!"

He gasped, coughing blood onto his pale face. "It's okay Kerri." He managed a weak smile. "I don't feel anything." His hand tightened over mine before it went limp and his eyes glassed over.

"Tom?" I cried, shaking his shoulders. I let him go and he collapsed back against the earth. Sobs racked my chest and I felt like the my armour was cinching itself tighter. Hands shaking, I carefully closed his limp eyelids and folded his hands over his stomach.

They were still warm.

I kissed his forehead and backed up, saluting him. "Ave Atque Vale Tomas." I whispered.

Before I could turn away, the air above his body lit up with an insignia I recognised all too well. A purple torch crossed over a sword. The same symbol that had been burned on my arm by Octavian.

"It's too late for that, mother." I whispered to Bellona before turning back to the slightly dented minivan, tears still hovering in my eyes.

Notes

Ummmmm... yep. I'm totally not crying or anything. Definitely not.

And who knows... with those good grades you may become a writer with books published somewhere else other than this site! Remember the name Phoebe!!!!

@Phoebe

I know.... but I'm still sad!!!

@ThatRandomPJOFangirl
I'm so sorry but it was time to wrap it up! I had to finish writing on this site by the time my school starts (on this Thursday) so I can work on getting the grades I desire. And mostly it was just time for this to end, I loved writing it but I had to stick to a timeline for some accuracy and that timeline just ran out quicker than I'd like. I love you guys and thank you for loving this story as much as I do!
