Audentis Fortuna Iuvat

Chant

Reyna stormed through the hallway, her cape trailing behind her in a way that threw a sense of intimidation across our whole group. Even Dakota - who towered above Reyna - swallowed nervously.

Her onyx eyes fixed on Jason. "You. You did this?" She asked him, her face portraying no emotion though long-dried tears had carved tracks through the dust and grime coating her face.

"Um, yeah?" He said.

A smile twitched at the corner of her mouth. "Well done. Now come, the legion is waiting to see their heroes."

As if on cue, the supporting pillars of the temple began to tremmor and dust began to rain from the ceiling.

"Run!" Jason yelled and as one we sprinted for the doors like our lives depended on it - which they absolutely did.

We dove through the open doors just as the stone palace collapsed inwards on itself, sending us forwards on a wave of dust and debris.

The legion erupted in a cheer like we had just won a Nobel prize instead of barely escaping with our lives from a crumbling building.

Reyna clambered to her feet and pulled Jason to his feet. "Twelfth Legion Fulminata, I give you Jason Grace! Who today proved himself as a true hero of Olympus!"

Lee and Anthony lifted Jason onto their shields and the legions surged forwards, a chant of 'Grace!' breaking its way through the shrill ringing in my ears.

I searched the crowd but I couldn't find who I was looking for. I tugged on Reyna's sleeve. "Where's Mark?"

At his name she ducked her head and I waited for several seconds before she wordlessly shook it.

Any elation I felt collapsed in on me. I couldn't breathe. The chanting became background noise to the ringing which just grew worse and worse. My breathing choked in my throat and my vision blurred with tears. I was falling back into the hole within myself and this time Mark wouldn't pull me out.

Mark was gone; dead.

I sunk to my knees and buried my face in the bloodied dirt. I didn't notice the chant change to 'Praetor!' and at that moment I didn't care. I was too busy trying to find oxygen amongst my tears and my grief. There were too many gone, too many.

A hand shook my shoulder. "Kerri, you alright?" I heard Dakota yell, but I didn't respond. I couldn't respond.

I was trapped again.

I never fell asleep, not for one moment. I felt the crowd move away and I heard the sound of vans starting. Dakota tried to force me to my feet but when my legs wouldn't hold me, he carried me to the same white van as before, buckling me into the backseat beside him.

"What's wrong?" He asked me softly as the wheels jolted into movement.

"He's gone." I whispered.

"She's gone too." He said, giving my hand a squeeze. Cindy was gone too. And Catie. And Dawn. And Tom. And countless others.

Too much death.

"But you know what?" Dakota asked.

"What?"

"We're still alive. And it sucks, but we're still alive. And we're going to do our best to stay that way; for them."

I nodded. "For them."

And then I let myself fall asleep, my hand still warm in his and his words still ringing in my mind.

For them.

And who knows... with those good grades you may become a writer with books published somewhere else other than this site! Remember the name Phoebe!!!!

@Phoebe

I know.... but I'm still sad!!!

@ThatRandomPJOFangirl
I'm so sorry but it was time to wrap it up! I had to finish writing on this site by the time my school starts (on this Thursday) so I can work on getting the grades I desire. And mostly it was just time for this to end, I loved writing it but I had to stick to a timeline for some accuracy and that timeline just ran out quicker than I'd like. I love you guys and thank you for loving this story as much as I do!
