Audentis Fortuna Iuvat
Choke
I stormed into the infirmary with only one thought on my mind. Please. Please let it be a misunderstanding. Please don't let me be right. Please let him be innocent, let him be the person I thought he was.
I pushed through the curtains and placed the container of blood on the end of his bed. "Tell me it wasn't you."
He looked at me, bleary-eyed from sickness and sleep. His eyes widened when he saw the blood. "Kerri, I-"
"Tell me it wasn't you." I repeated.
He shook his head, "I can't tell you that."
I wanted to be angry at him. I wanted to be furious. I wanted to feel the urge to beat him to a bloody pulp, but all I felt was disappointment. "Why?" I choked the word out, collapsing in the chair beside his bed.
"I didn't want to, I just- Look, I was promised that if I did it then I wouldn't have to work the nightshift anymore. I'd be able to actually have a life and I was desperate, Kerri. I was so desperate but I swear I didn't want to hurt you."
"Who?" I rasped, "Who promised you this?"
He shook his head, "I don't know. I found the blood with a note that had the instructions on it. I swear I don't know. Gods, I'm so sorry. I- I love you, I really do and… I made a real mess of things, didn't I?"
I stood up without a word, taking the blood with me. His apologies were sincere, no doubt. But they were far too late.
I couldn't forgive him, not for this.
