The Daughters of the Big Three

Chapter One

I close my book and looked around. That feeling that you’re all alone when you finish a book and everyone else is continuing their lives- very lonesome.

My name is Elaina Day.
I’m fourteen years old. I go to a regular high school full of regular kids. Apparently I was the odd one out. I have a normal family. Normal mom, dad, brother, and sister. Or so I thought.
Anyway, about school. So yeah. A regular day. I’ve been going for about two weeks now. I’m a freshman. Still, I’ve made no friends. Not even my brother would let me sit with him.
I sit down at a table in the corner of the cafeteria and pull out my small lunch. I look up and a boy with a school lunch is looking at me.
“Can I sit?” He asks.
“Sure. No one else will,” I mumble.
“I’m Oliver. We’re in the same math class.”
“Cool. I’m Elaina.” I smile. I might be making a friend here after all.
Just when I thought I could eat in peace, two cheerleaders walk over and plop down across from Oliver and me. Ugh. I think.
“Hi!” Says one with blonde hair and bright blue pompoms. “I’m Ally! And this is Ellie!” She points to her friend with brown hair and red pompoms.
“Are you a freshman?” Ellie tilts her head and smiles in almost a creepy sort of way. But the cheerleaders only look at me.
“Uh, yeah,” I say awkwardly. I glance at Oliver who looks both scared, worried, and angry.
“Do you want to come eat lunch outside with us? It’s totally nice out!” Ally says cheerfully. Again in a creepy way.
“No,” Oliver says glaring at them. “We’re fine inside.”
“Shut up, satyr,” Ally and Ellie say in unison, glaring at Oliver.
“Satyr?” I look at Oliver, puzzled. Then back at the cheerleaders. “Is this some sort of skit? Are we pretending to be in some Greek mythology thing? Or did you notice me reading?”
Ally and Ellie look at me and grin. More creepiness. “Sure, demigod. Let’s pretend this is a play in the theatre.”
Oliver leans next to me and whispers, “Only they won’t pretend when they kill you. Let’s get out of here.”
I stand up and so does Oliver. “Where are you going?” The girls say in unison. And they too stand.
Run,” Says Oliver. He turns and breaks off into a sort of sprint/gallop. I chase after him.
We run out of the cafeteria and down the hall. We turn a corner and almost run into our math teacher, Mr. Brown.
“No running in the halls! Oh, it’s you two,” Mr. Brown smiles.
I look at Oliver if we can approve of our teacher when he says, “Mr. Brown, Elaina needs to go.”
Mr. Brown nods and says, “Follow me.”
“Um, sir?” I interrupt.
“Yes?”
“We have a bit of a problem,” I point behind us and turn around just as the cheerleaders turn the corner.
“Thought running away would save you?” They say simultaneously- which is still creeping me out.
“Elaina, you ever fight with a weapon before?” Mr. Brown looks at me.
“What? No! Why?” I am so confused.
“Okay. Well, can I see your ring?”
“Uh… Sure?” I pull off the ring I got three years ago from my mom and hand it to Mr. Brown. Why does he need it?
Mr. Brown flips over my ring then it suddenly grows into a bronze sword. I am stunned. “Since when can it do that?” I ask.
I looked at the cheerleaders who are transforming. They now are one thing instead of two. They suddenly morphed into a large two headed winged creature.
I turn to Mr. Brown and Oliver who were now several large steps behind me. “Catch!” Mr. Brown calls and throws my ring-sword to me. I grasp the hilt and turn to the creature thing running at me.
The two headed cheerleader thing comes at me. So, what else should I do besides swing the sword? I swipe the heads off and the cheerleaders disappear in a puff of smoke.
“What the crap was that?” I turn to Mr. Brown.
“That. That was one of many monsters you will fight, and hopefully kill.”
