Islands of Guilt

Chapter 17

Percy ~

Leo, Annabeth and I finally reach the burning town. I could see Annabeth admire the aged architecture, but I was more focused on the fact that it was burning. There were people streaming out of their homes, carrying their children in their charred clothing. Some parents were frantically searching through the town square for their children, and children for their parents. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Leo light on fire and singe my arm hair. "I don't think bursting into flames would be convenient in our current situation," Annabeth told him.

Leo muttered an apology, which Annabeth promptly ignored. "We need to get straight to business and stop all the nonsense," Annabeth tells me and Leo, "Leo, since you're immune to the flames, you can go into all the buildings and see if there are any civilians or bodies trapped inside. If you can't get them out without going through the fire, call for Percy to drench the flames. Percy, you will be stopping the fire from spreading, and stopping it all together. There's a fountain in the town square where you can summon the water from. I will be trying to keep order throughout the town and make sure that every child is with their parent safe and sound. I will also be helping anyone medically. Is there any questions?"

"No, ma'am," I say. I was impressed by Annabeth's well thought out plan, and the amount of calm she kept. Annabeth nodded at us, and the three of us parted ways. I headed towards the burning houses near the edge of town, and took care of some of the plants. I felt the power surging through me, and water flew from my palms, squelching the flames on houses. I walked down rock-floored alleyways, which led to new neighbourhoods. I could feel my strength lessening after every house, and the job was getting boring. “Percy!” Leo yelled at me from one of the houses ahead of me. I could see his figure through window, holding an unconscious girl. I heard her shouting at Leo, “Where is my mother!? Where is Luke?!” Leo responds, “You’re the only one left in here.” I ran towards them, and unleashed water, and the fire was out. I summoned a mini hurricane, and lifted myself up to the second story window to get the girl from out of the house. Leo jumped out the window right after us.
She had bright red hair, and her face was showered with freckles. Her eyes were gently shut, but her breaths were shallow. The green blouse she wore had burned parts, as well as her jeans. The girl was about seventeen, and reminded me a lot of my friend at camp, Rachel. I carried her to the town square and told Annabeth to check on her. Annabeth nodded and got to work. “Clary!” A woman exclaimed, and ran towards the girl. She was obviously her mom, with the same hair and freckles, even the same petite figure. I headed out to stop more of the fire, and I only had the middle of town to work on now. But I could feel the toll it was taking on my energy, so I had to ration my strength. Soon only one building was left, and Leo was inside helping a little girl escape. I stopped the fire just as they got out the door.
“What’s your name?” I heard Leo ask her.
“Emma Carstairs.” The girl responded. Leo and I led her to the town square and told her we were going to help her find her parents. “I don’t have any parents,” Emma said to us, “They died years ago.”
“I know what that’s like,” Leo says, “We’ll help you find anyone you know anyways.” Emma thanked us, and a tall man in black robes started approaching us.
