Hecate's Experiment

The Camp

Hope woke up, when they were still in the van, pulling up to the Camp. She was a smart girl, she knew what had happened. She knew what she had lost. Yet, for some reason, she didn't cry. She didn't even look like she was going to. She merely stared out the window, her facial expression just completely blank.
When they got out of the van, the morning light just began to break over the hills in the distance. Pollux remembered how she loved watching the sunrise, and how she would always smile at the sight out it, but she only turned away. He was starting to worry.
Chiron told them all to go to their respective cabins, to catch up on sleep and visit siblings and friends finally, except Hope of course, Hope was to accompany him to the big house.
Hope followed him without a word. She sat down on the couch, ignoring the moving jaguar and the man playing cards with a couple of satyrs.
The man looked at her. "I take it this is Hecate's monstrosity, then?" he asked rudely, sipped a can of diet coke.
Chiron nodded. "This is Hope," he said. "Hope this is the camp director, Mr. D."
"He smells like wine," she said tonelessly. "And even an idiot could tell you his real name is Dionysus."
Mr. D peered at her over his cards. Not many campers could actually tell who he was like that. He shrugged and turned back to his cards.
Chiron handed her, the dragon dagger from the night before. "This is yours to keep," he said. "Never let it out of your sight."
"And I do?"
"It the blade is drawn, your true form with reveal itself again."
She stared at the blade. Almost tempted to test the theory--but not really wanting her senses overwhelmed, she just belted on the blade. "Can I go?" she asked.
"Not yet," muttered Mr. D. "Your mother asked that I give you this." He held out an old piece of parchment, folded and sealed in wax. "A bit of a traditionalist she is," he muttered as Hope took the paper. "Go."
She looked at Chiron for a moment. He nodded, and she left.
Almost no one was awake, so she made her way down to a pier and sat down on the edge and opened the letter.
It was written in a fancy cursive script, but she managed to decipher it.

To my dearest Hope,
Hello child. Yes this letter is from your mother, Hecate. I realize that you may think what I've done to you is a curse, but I was merely only trying to help you. You are important.
Someone or something is stirring up monsters from the deepest depths of Tartarus. Monsters that could never be awoken. The other gods can see this, just as much as I can, but they believe the 'seven' will be able to 'handle' it.
Fools! This will be too much for the seven. It will be your task. I am certain of it. That is why I mixed the blood I did in yours. Most of it is dragon. However, I did a few tests with a house cat and a golden retriever, so you may have some of the traits of those animals.
You've probably already noticed some of your powers. Your senses will have gotten stronger. You will be impervious to fire (don't try to breathe any, after raising you for a year, I made sure you could never breathe fire--demonic child). You can change your skin to be as hard as scales, and you have the strength of the mightiest dragon.
However, giving you these abilities has striped you of the abilities to perform magic. It will be dangerous for you to stay with your other three siblings. You are practically allergic to Magic, but you do have a strange ability to completely null another's magic.
Because of this, I have asked Chiron to let you sleep elsewhere, than my cabin. It will repeal you.
And above all cost, be careful, child. The other gods may not have necessarily agreed to what I've done to you. They might see you as an abomination, and try to kill you.
You will be safe at camp, though. Stay there, train, learn to use your powers. And when the time comes, I will send a quest your way. Stay safe, my child.
Hecate.

Hope scoffed at the letter. She still didn't trust Hecate or what she'd done to her. She sighed and leaned back against the ground. She didn't feel good. She felt hungry and tired, and just plain sick to her stomach. Like she was gonna hurl.
Footsteps approached behind her. She looked up. It was Pollux. "Do you need something?" she asked a little harshly.
"I just wanted to check to see if your okay," he said quietly.
"I'm fine, just reading a letter from my mom," she said showing him the letter.
"Anything interesting?" he asked.
"Well, beside the fact that I'm part dragon apparently, she called me a demon child." Hope couldn't help but grin at that. She might get angry a lot, but staying angry was never something she was able to do. She was always a happy person. Always smiling and always laughing.
Pollux grinned, seeing her smile. "You are a demon child," he laughed, sitting down next to her.
Hope faked being insulted. "I am not!" she protested. "I'm just a little on the wild side."
"You are the wild side." He replied.
"Watch it," Hope told him. "I'll push you in the water."
"I'll drag you under."
Finally, Hope began to be her old self, laughing a bit, but soon the laughter turned to sadness. Tears began to leak out of her eyes, as she remembered her father, but she blinked them away before Pollux could see.
She got to her feet, and turned to face the camp. "Well?" she asked. "Aren't you going to show me around?"
Pollux smiled and gave her the grand tour. Or it would have been, except people were waking up now, and Hope kinda had a tail. When he started to show her around the cabin area, Hope was suddenly the center of attention.
People were whispering about her in their cabins, and not all of them were friendly. Of course, they didn't imagine that Hope could hear them. At least not until Hope screamed "I CAN HEAR YOU ASSHOLES!" and ran away towards the beach again--wondering where the language had come from (she'd been brought up to be polite and lady-like--or at least as lady like as she could get).
Hope wondered if she'd ever really like this camp and if she'd ever really fit in.

Notes

I couldn't resist adding another chapter by the way Hope's dragon blood will do a bit more than give her powers--but I won't tell you want. (You can guess if you want but I won't tell you if you are right)
