Behind the Shadows

Traitor in Danger

Splinters of wood whooshed past Sapphire as she tried with all her might to stay above water. The boat was slowly breaking apart and that was not her biggest worry. Sailing in an unknown direction had been a big mistake, and soon Sapphire would be dead if she didn't act now. It had been an hour or so ago that the water had changed colour, became unsteady, and everything became a threat. Large unfish like things swam below her and would shake the row boat in the passing. It wasn't until she saw what looked like massive sharp teeth poking out of the water in the shape of a circle, that she knew exactly where she was. The Sea of Monsters. Yeah, She was so dead.
Her boat swirls around and around. Sapphire holds her stomach in discomfort. The boat hits off the teeth and more wood snaps away, making the boat look more like a raft. Her fingers grip at anything just to stay on the boat/raft. Sapphire grasps the oars and attempts to paddle her way through the gaps between the teeth. The current is far too strong and the oars are yanked from her hand, turning her head just in time to see the oars snap in half when they hit a tooth. That could be her if she didn't do something. Sapphire could hear her own heart beat over the sound of crashing waves and crunching wood. Fear swallows her whole and her hands tremble so much that her grip becomes weak. It was tempting just to give up and let Charybdis eat her whole, but there was that annoying voice telling her to save herself, to try and not give up.
A prayer to the gods perhaps? No, Sapphire would do this on her own. She had never been one to rely on the gods. There was nothing left of the boat that could help her.
"I will not die today" Sapphire tells herself. It didn't help much, but it was nice to hear her voice so steady. There was a plan in her head. It was a terrible plan, but it would give her time.
In one very unsteady movement Sapphire rips off her shirt and twists it. The boat continues to swirl and it moves closer and closer to a tooth. Maybe Charybdis would spare her if she knew they were related. That would be a lovely conversation. Hey, Charybdis my wonderful sister fancy letting me live this one time. Do it for our daddy kins. Saying it like that though would probably leave Sapphire in a million little pieces.
As the boat neared the tooth Sapphire tightens her grip on the twisted shirt. She springs forward when the boat is close enough. Sapphire smacks right into the tooth. It hurts, a lot. She wraps her legs around the tooth and then puts the shirt around to as a supported grip. There was just one problem now. What was she going to do now?

Through Jake's Eyes - Part two
The fire crackles and it echos through the silence. No one has spoken a word since they all got around the campfire. Chiron is a short distance away talking to Dionysus. Jake sits on the ground and stares into the fire. Concentrating on the flames keeps his mind at ease. It stops him from thinking about what Chiron might have to say. There was something different about camp since he had got his mind back. Nothing had changed, but there was this atmosphere that didn't seem to want to go away. The atmosphere spoke words no one would speak. It spoke of what happened when everyone had their minds taken. It spoke of Sapphire's sudden disappearance. It also spoke of what might happen next, that was something everyone feared. Luke was now at war with the gods, but was he also at war with the demi gods who disagreed with him?
Chiron clears his throat and everyone jumps. Jake lifts his head and sees him standing before everyone across the campfire. He still looks tired and sad.
"I don't know where to begin and I think it would be better if I just answered the questions you all have" Chirons voice is uneven and he avoids looking anyone in the eyes. A boy from the Ares cabin lifts his hand and all heads turn to him.
"Are we safe now?" The boy asks. And a few heads nod at his question.
Dionysus steps forward and answers for Chiron. "Camp is not safe yet, but I do know that we have been saved by what I am unsure" Some campers grumble at that. How could he be sure camp had been saved? Maybe whoever was behind the mind control just got bored and up and left. A girl on Jake's left lifts her hand.
"What happened to you, Chiron?" She asks. She sounds more curious than concerned. Chiron shifts and takes a deep breath.
"I don't know. The last time I was at camp I was in the big house and then all of a sudden it just went dark, and that's all it has been. I don't even know how I got back here" His face is full of discomfort and he looks like he is away to continue, but Jake saves him the pain and lifts his hand. Everyone looks at him. His question was for his own peace of mind rather than for the other campers.
"On the days that everyone got their minds taken Sapphire disappeared and has not been seen since. Is there any way that you know what happened to her?" Jake asks. His question affects Chiron in a bad way, Dionysus too. Both their faces turn dark and they share a look before Dionysus speaks.
"Sapphire left camp to join Luke. The gods have turned their backs on her for her decision when Poseidon saw her on Luke's ship. She is a traitor and lied to us all about where her loyalties lie. She is very dangerous and if spotted she is to be killed on sight" Dionysus speaks with a bitter tone and it stabs at Luke with each word. Chiron choughs.
"We don't know for certain that she has joined Luke. They were close when at camp so she may of wanted to see him or even make him reconsider his actions" Chiron sighs and its clear that knowing about Sapphire is affecting him. Sapphire had been at camp for years and it was clear the guy thought highly of her and her abilities. "Its not like Sapphire to just up and leave camp the way she did. Camp half blood has been her home for a long time so she must of had her reasons". Dionysus grunts and crosses his arms.
"I knew she was trouble. Too many daddy issues and childhood problems to be reasoned with" Someone from the back shouts. Jake jumps to his feet and turns to face whoever had spoken. It was an Ares kid and he was smirking at Jake.
"What has she ever done to make you automatically distrust her? Sapphire has saved you lot on more than one occasion. Have some damn respect" Jake barks before he marches off towards his cabin. He would never believe that Sapphire would betray camp. She would never leave him here without a word. If there was one thing Sapphire respected more than camp, that was friendship. She always said that the blood of friend ship was made thicker than family blood. Her friends were her family. Luke was her friend too, but he had hurt her badly enough for her to know better. Jake knew that he would have to bring her back to camp some how. He just hoped she was safe where ever she was.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was only one word on Sapphire's lips before Charybdis swallowed her whole. Why? Then she was dragged deep down into darkness. There was no time to even scream.
