Behind the Shadows

Apollo Apollo

What Sapphire landed on made a loud squelching sound, and it hurt a lot. It hurt so much Sapphire found herself checking for broken bones. Her left leg wouldn't move and every movement she made to try and stand up made her hiss through her teeth. She could work with a broken arm but a leg? That was a whole other level of difficult. The stomach of Charybdis was a dark pit of doom. It was huge and all that occupied it was munched up ships and herself of course. There was no exit door unfortunately. The Greek gods were getting so up to date on technology these days, Sapphire was surprised there was no light switch to provide better lighting in here. It seemed with all her hope vanishing, her sense of humour remained strong. She had never heard of anyone escaping Charybdis before and that worried her.
It was not hard to find a plank of wood to help support her while standing. She found one that was half her height and there wasn't too many nails sticking out. The air around her was stale and she found it was better to breath through her mouth to avoid the awful stench of rotting fish. Puddles of unknown fluids gurgled and spat droplets at her while she hobbled by. Every now and then she would trip over wood and curse the gods, but apart from that she was getting on fine and dandy. It was huge inside Charybdis and Sapphire was getting exhausted just walking half the distance of her.
"You know you could at least clean up a bit in here!" Sapphire shouts and sighs at her sarcasm. The only reply she gets is more gurgling and another spit from a puddle. It splats on her shoe but causes no harm. It is in that moment Sapphire remembers she had sacrificed her shirt to hold on to one of the pointed rocks. So now she is bagpackless and shirtless. Was this the normal for demigods?

Through Jake's Eyes Part Five
Hecate took Jake and Grover a meadow. Jake looks out the window and squints his eyes at all the grass and flowers. Grover however leaps out of the car and does a few twirls amongst the flowers before falling on his back. Hecate turns her head to Jake and grins. "Use your ears" She says before flicking her hand. Jakes door opens by itself and then he finds himself falling out of the taxi. Hecate waves out the window and disappears in a blur. Bye then. Use his ears? What was he supposed to listen for?
"I want to live here" Grover sighs happily while picking at the flowers and then shoving them in his mouth. Delicious. "Where are we?" Jake flops onto his back and sighs. The meadow smells amazing with all the bright flowers. All he could hear was Grovers endless chatter and the songs of birds. "I'm pretty sure this is not Greece" Grover mutters with his mouth full of grass and flowers. He offers Jake some but he politely refuses. There is not a single cloud in the sky and the sun smiles down on to the meadow. It was not too hot or too cold and the brightness was just right. It was like someone had angled the sun perfectly over them. Jake bolts upright and clicks his fingers from the realisation. Grover shuts up and shoots Jake a concerned look. From his silence Jake finally hears it. The most beautiful melody he had ever heard greets his ears. It echoes all around the meadow. Jake stands up and motions for Grover to follow. During the ride here Hecate had shoved a piece of crumpled paper into Jake's hand and on it was the worst poem Jake had ever read. He begins reading out loud in the middle of the meadow with only Grover and flower to watch his most embarrassing moment ever.
"Apollo Apollo you are great
Apollo Apollo you are bright
Apollo Apollo you are a lovable puppy
Apollo Apollo you are a box of perfect
Apollo Apollo wherefore art thou Apollo
Apollo Apollo is nearly as cool as Hecate"
When he finishes reading it out he can feel his face burning away. A second of silence ticks by and Grover falls over laughing. Jake groans and rakes his fingers through his hair. When he returned to camp Grover was going to spread this like wildfire. Someone begins clapping and Grover's laughing stops dead. Someone steps out from the trees in the distance and prances over with ease. Apollo has a this aura of self assured cockiness that resembles a lot to Sapphire's.
"Yes it is I Apollo Apollo" He sings when he reaches Jake and Grover. "I admire anyone who write poetry but that.." Apollo chuckles and shakes his head "I may have to send a few poetry class vouchers Hecate's way" He crosses his arms and stares down at Jake. His sun kissed hair sparkles in the sunlight and made him slightly less intimidating. His attitude changes into something a little more serious. He frowns at Jake. "What do you want demigod?"
"You may not remember me but I am a friend of Sapphire, your eh.." Jake trials off not sure what to say.
"Daughter, she is my daughter and I do remember you. You're the one who got trapped in the sirens trance" Apollo smirks and Jake holds back a groan. It was just another thing on Jake's endless list of time Sapphire had saved his butt. Well Apollo saved his butt that time but no Sapphire means no Apollo help. "Now answer my question"
"I need your help" Jake gulps and shifts his eyes to the grass.
"I gathered that much. Help with what?"
"Sapphire is missing. She ran off months ago and hasn't been seen since" Jake explains. "I know she joined Luke and his army but that's not like her and I know if I talk to her I can change her mind"
"I know all this" Apollo's voice holds regret and Jake looks up at him. His face is a storm of emotions. "Sapphire left Luke's ship a few weeks ago. I watched her sail away on a small rowing boat. She sailed pretty far before She just disappeared into the sea of monsters. I didn't get there in time and for that I am sorry I could not save her"
"Save her from what?" Grover asks. Apollo scratches the back of his head and cringes.
"Charybdis" Jakes whole body goes weak. Charybdis? The thought of her being killed by that monster breaks Jake piece by piece.
"Is there any possibility that she may still be alive?" Jake asks. Apollo gives a small smile.
"The better question is, is there any possibility Charybdis will survive Sapphires wrath? I can take you there on my sun chariot but your life is in your own hands" Apollo gestures for them to follow.
"I didn't sign up for sea monsters, Jake" Grover grumbles.
"Neither did I but I did sign up for giving all I have into bring Sapphire back to camp" Jake smiles encouragingly at Grover and the pair of the follow Apollo to his sun chariot.
