Behind the Shadows

Bitter Sweet

He had such a young face. There was so much innocence in his eyes and smile. An innocence that had not yet been poisoned by the horrors of a demigod's life. The missing scar on his face made him look like the life that could of been. It had been so long since he had gotten the scar that it was a shock to remember how his face used to look. The scar was a constant reminder of when he came back a little more broken and full of a hidden bitter rage. Without that quest there would of been no scar and no scar meant one less bad memory to damage him. His smile did not make Sapphire happy it just broke her heart. This was Luke she could no longer have and would never know again. His hand is outstretched, an offer for her to take it. It pained Sapphire to take it in her own. Even his hair looked more bright and lively. Last time she had seen him his hair was dull and looked a little grey. So much darkness for one so young and still in their youth. The younger version tugs Sapphire along. All that surrounds them is a bright white glow. Its hard to see past it. She follows anyway with unease flowing through her. A few steps forward and the surroundings change and take form into somewhere else. Sapphire instantly knows where Luke is taking her. She can smell the fresh cut grass and apple tree. She can hear her mother laughing and her father whistling. The house comes into view before her then the the front garden and white fence. The gate clinks open then closed in the soft wind. It had been so long since she had been here. This was where she grew up and where she ran away from.
"Sapphire, could you help your father?" Her mother softly asks. Thats when a little girl comes bursting out the front door with out of control long hair following behind. Her father is below the apple tree picking ripe apples. Her mother is attacking the roses that climb the house wall. "No funny business today missy" Her mother turns her head to give the girl that look Sapphire knew too well. The girl gives an innocent look and shrugs. Luke chuckles beside Sapphire and thats when Sapphire see's and even more younger luke walk past them and stops just outside the gate. He looks over at everyone in the garden then ducks down out of site. He crawls along the outside of the fence and stops just beside the apple tree. The younger Sapphire pauses as if sense Luke's presence and grins to herself. She looks around her and begins fake sneezing uncontrollably. Her father puts down the basket full of apples and looks down at the younger Sapphire.
"Seems like your hay fever is bad today. Go back inside dear" Her father says and gives her a little push in the direction of the house. The younger Sapphire scampers along towards the house. Before going in she looks back and waits until no one is looking. She then runs and hops over the fence. Luke is waiting there with a devious grin on his face. The pair then run off to the woodland area. Sapphire remembers this day too well. Is was bitter and sweet. They had played until early evening and when Sapphire got home her parents were not happy. It was the day she had found out she was adopted. It had been late at night and her parents arguing had woken her up. In mid argument when Sapphire had come down to sit on the stairs to listen in her father had let slip the secret. "Maybe she gets it from one of her birth parents" They were bickering about her bad behaviour and her father blamed her birthparents. Her mother knew it was just Sapphire being swept up in Luke's bad faze. Luke was having a bad time with his mother like he always had but then he had started acting out. The week before he had broken Mrs P's window with his ball and claimed it was an accident but Sapphire had been there and saw him aim straight at her window. It was an adrenaline rush being involved in his little schemes but unlike Luke, Sapphire had strict parents and she learnt good from bad where as he had no one to tell him no. His whole life had led to his decision to turn on the gods. And unlike everyone else Sapphire had had the front seat to see the whole journey. She seemed to be the only one able to understand his pain. Luke was not fully to blame for his decision. The people in his life played a big part in it too. With a heavy painful sigh Sapphire turns to the younger Luke.
"I would like to wake up now" She croaks. Luke nods.
"You understand now make them understand. There is light in these dark time. You need to be that light" He speaks softly as though talking to an injured animal. Luke lets go of her hand and everything slips away.
Water carries her along with the tide. The moon gleems over the water and provides little light. The silence around her carries a fearful sense of loneliness. Sapphire is completely alone with no idea of where she is. It takes a while for Sapphire to collect the memories leading up to where she is now. Had her friends survived? That question carried more weight than she had ever bared. They would of landed close to one another therefore they may not be to far away. If they had survived and depending on how long Sapphire had been out. How had she gotten out of the chariot? There was little chance that she had simply just floated out and up to the surface. Her voice was unlikely to reach very far so Sapphire draws her fingers up t her mouth and whistles loudly again and again and again. Nothing responds and it is frightening. "Hello" She calls out. "Anyone?" Her voice cracks through it. Her head was sore from hitting it and her voice rung straight through it. But it did not stop her. "Annabeth? Jake! Grover!" Her voice was like a knife to her head "Clarisse!" Sapphire was unsure on whether to move or not in fear of more further away from wherever her friends may be. She had to move though. They may be dead and she had to survive.
Sapphire swam until the cold night air bit at her neck and she could no take it anymore. She ducked under the surface where the temperature did not affect her and she was able to swim faster. Fish swim past and avoid going close to her as if sensing her out of control emotions. Sapphire calls on the dolphins in her mind in hope they may provide some help. Only one comes to her aid and it looks unpleased for some reason.
"Hello" Sapphire croaks uneasily. "I have a favour to ask" The dolphin simply nods its head slightly. "My friends fell into the ocean from the sky some time ago and I need to find them" The dolphin turns around and swims away. Sapphire tenses for a moment thinking that it was abandoning her to her misery. It stops and waits and she realises that it wants her to follow. She swims after the dolphin in the darkness of the ocean.
The dolphin stops after about ten minutes of swimming and begins swimming up to the surface. As Sapphire follows she notices a large dark object floating along the surface. When she breaks through the surface she feels hope at last. The object is a make shift raft from a part of the chariot and on it is Grover and Annabeth. Sapphire smiles gratefully the dolphin who just stares at her before disappearing back into the ocean. She approaches the raft silently and examines the situation. Annabeth is asleep and Grover sits beside her and stares off into the distance. His expression is blank but he looks drained. Sapphire reaches the raft and coughs slightly. Grover nearly jumps out of his skin. He looks at Sapphire for a solid minute before speaking. "We thought you were dead" He mutters. Sapphire frowns up at him. She was the only one most likely to survive.
"I think you have forgotten who I am" She jokes but Grover just keeps staring.
"We saw Jake fall out when we surfaced from our fall but you went down in the chariot. The force of it should of killed you" Sapphire just shrugs unable to give the right answer.
"Where is Jake?" Sapphire asks and Grover's change in expression says it all.
"We saw him fall but were unable to find him. We have been out here for hours just floating and there has been no signs of the others"
"I should go find him" Sapphire stutters "I had a dolphin help me find you two. I can have one help me again. Maybe he has a raft too.."
"Annabeth said that we have to stay together" Sapphire looks at Grover and sees fear. She sighs and starts whistling again and jumps up onto the raft. Annabeth stirs and wakes up. She nearly chokes at the sight of Sapphire.
"Its like you are immortal or something. You always seem to wriggle out of death's reach every time" Annabeth states. They just shrug at each other and then break out in smiles. Sapphire then carries on whistling. Dead or alive Sapphire would drag Jakes butt back to camp with her.
