Behind the Shadows

Panic

Being knocked out and shoved into a closet was not on Sapphires to do list. It had come as a shock to her with the amount of strength Nancy had. It had been all calm and normal. Her and Nancy had been strolling through the ship with no threat in sight. Then all of a sudden Nancy grabbed hold of Sapphires hair and whacked her head off the wall multiple times until Sapphire saw stars and darkness. Waking up in a closet again was not fun. It was the same one as before, with the hammock still hanging. The door was locked this time though. Sapphire officially despised Nancy. Maybe the girl was just not convinced enough that Sapphire was not a threat. Maybe Nancy was just a horrible brat. Sapphire preferred the second one.
The light is poor in the closet, with the only source coming through the crack at the bottom of the door. Sapphire had tried to bang the door down but it would not budge. In all the time she had been sitting on the floor awake, she had not heard a single noise from the other side of the door. She knew that eventually someone would pass the closet but Sapphire's temper was flaring and her patience was running out, very fast. Being alone in a dark closet did not do much good for Sapphires busy mind. She kept on thinking about camp and Jake. Its was his empty eyes that kept her determined to save the camp. If the situation wasn't so serous then she might laugh at Jake. First her had been mind controlled by a siren and now this. However the more she thought about it, the more it just made her sad. If she had been more in control of the situation on the siren ship and at camp then she might of not of been sitting here on Lukes ship waiting to beg on her knees for help. It made her feel pathetic and weak. She spent too much time complaining and now it had consumed her in to a storm of dark negative thoughts. Her most upsetting thought was that after all this she would be the hero labeled as a traitor, from the ones she would save.
"When I get out of here I'm going to feed little Nancy to the sharks" a grumble of words left Sapphire mouth. No one was there to listen but hearing it out loud made her feel better. It saved her from punching the door a few more time. "Or maybe I will just kill her myself". Sapphire hisses through her teeth and curls her arms around her knees, bringing them up to her chin. "What does she even hope to accomplish by locking me in a closet?" Sapphire bangs her head against the wall in frustration. A click comes from the door and it swings open. Sapphire groans. "Took your bloody time!" She grumbles. Sapphire looks up at the person standing in the doorway. She swallows her relief and chokes on the shock that has replaced it.
"Sapphire?" Lukes confused voice booms in the small closet. The walls feel like they are closing in on Sapphire. Maybe a few hours more in the closet would have prepared her better for this moment. All the panic and dread she had been storing at the back of her mind, was now suffocating her. Last time she was hear all she had to think about was getting Jake and escaping. This time she could not escape. She was stuck here and Sapphire would be betraying both sides. Luke's eyes met Sapphires eyes. She tried to picture was his face would look like once he found out she was never on his side. She saw Jakes face, Percys and Annabeths. Sapphire climbs to her feet and brushes a hand through her hair.
"I-" Her voice shook and it made her feel small in that moment. "I need to speak to you" She got it out but it left her heart banging in her chest. Luke frowns, clearly confused. Sapphire did not blame him.
"Okay. Follow me" His voice is quiet but Sapphire hears enough to know he is nervous. Luke walks out of the closet and Sapphire follows. He leads her to his office. Well Sapphire thought it was an office because of his desk which stood at the end of the room with large leather chairs on either side of it. It was the same room she had been in before when she had had the weird vision when she touched that guy. The guy was nowhere in sight this time though. It was just Luke and her. He walks to his desk and takes a seat. Sapphire follows and sits on the edge of one of the chairs opposite him. Her hands grip the arms, with her nails digging holes. Sapphire counts her breaths in an attempt to calm herself. Luke watches her like she is a puzzle he can't put together. "Speak" Is all he says. Sapphire finds the the words she had planned to say to him in an attempt to convince him of her loyalty.
"They don't trust me. The whole camp, they turned on me and I know it was Percy's doing" Sapphire stumbles on her words at the beginning but her voice find its strength and her expression hardens in fake anger. "I knew it was only a matter of time. I watched as all my friends started to side with Percy and how could I convince them that he was lying? It was Jake who was the last to turn on me. Just after Percy left and most of the campers had turned on me that was when I saw the look in Jake's eyes. Seeing that-" Sapphire takes a deep breath, pretending to be emotional. Luke's eyes are a storm but Sapphire can't read his expression. "Seeing that, it was enough to tell me that I was no longer welcome. Even Annabeth won't look me in the eyes. I thought I would be safe as long as I kept out of everyones way, but then Chiron disappeared and that Cayden showed up. I knew Cayden was waiting for the right moment to attack. I left with no idea of where to go. On my travels I met my birth mom and Hermes" Sapphire waits for a reaction from Luke but she get nothing so she just carries on. "Hermes said some things and Percy was there to hear. He turned on me and that made me realize that I don't need him. I don't need camp half blood or any of my so called friends. I thought I at least meant something to them. To them I am trash waiting to be put out. I am a traitor with no where to go" Sapphire stares holes into the wooden desk. Luke is silent for a stretch of time. Sapphire clenches her jaw tightly to keep her emotions in check. It was then that she began to worry that maybe Luke won't believe her and then she would have to go back to camp and kick butt on her own.
Lukes chair scrapes forward and he leans over the desk. Sapphire can feel his eyes on her.
"What has this got to do with you being on my ship locked in a closet?" He asks. Sapphire leans back in her chair and mets Lukes eyes. She smirks and opens her arms.
"I want to join you. It makes sense now, why you hate the gods so much. I was blind but now I see. They ruined my life! My own father shoved me into another gods hands because I was not good enough. I hate them so damn much. Being locked in the closet however is not my fault. Your little pet assistant thing shoved me in there". Sapphire waits and waits for a response. She watches look watch her with a strange look on his face. Did her believe her?
"I already have enough to do. Maybe you should just go back to camp and sort things out" Lukes words hit Sapphire like a blast of freezing cold water. She had not convinced him. Sapphire jumps to her feet and she stares daggers down at Luke. He won't meet her eyes now. Coward.
"I can't" Sapphire throws in. Her minds twirled about with new things to convince him with. Luke sighs and looks up at her.
"Why?" He looks annoyed. Sapphire grips the desk to keep herself standing.
"I lost control of my temper and before I left I made sure everyone knew I had no intention of coming back. I- I attacked Cayden in the big house. He caught me arguing with Percy through an iris message. I thought Cayden was going to kill me" The lies were becoming so easy to say that they just flowed out of Sapphire's mouth. Luke clenches his jaw. Sapphire knew that the fight between her and Cayden would spark his attention.
"I know you would not just abandon camp. Why are you lying to me Sapphire?". The panic inside Sapphire threatens to tear her apart. She must remain strong for now. Just a little bit longer. It seemed the more she said the more Luke just saw straight through her lies. Maybe he knew her better then she thought. She might not be putting enough emotion into her words.
"Luke" Her voice is steady "You have to believe me! You are all I have left." Her breathing is out of control. If she kept this up she might lose control of her actions. Being out in the ocean was a bad place for her to be right now.
"No i'm just your last option. Just go Sapphire" Luke pulls out some papers and starts working away. Sapphire was dismissed.
"Luke please. You're my family" Sapphires voice holds a pleading that is not fake. Lukes dismissal hurt more than she would like to admit. His grip tightens around his pen. His knuckles slowly turn white.
"I've lost all my family. You will get over it" His words stab Sapphire in the heart. She had never meant for this to get personal. Her expression and words were no longer fake. Everything about her, from her expression to how she stood screams broken. She wanted to let the tears out that were burning at the back of her eyes. The slight shake of the ship reminds her to watch her emotions. Luke does not notice. Its hard though. Its far to hard to just shove these emotions to the back of her mind. Sapphire picks up a cup holding pencils and pens and throws it at the wall behind Luke. It clatters to the floor and leaves Sapphire feeling empty. Luke sighs and stands up and walks toward Sapphire. She panics on the spot. He was going to show her the door and that would be it. Her plan would be out the window. Her brain is mess with things she could say and do, but she remains standing still with her mouth clamped shut. Luke looks furious, he grabs her arm and attempts to move her. Sapphire closes her eyes and tries to stay put.
"I-" Sapphire chokes on her words as the tears flow out her eyes. She had grown up with this boy and now he was just going to throw her out like she meant nothing. She wanted to stomp her foot like a child and scream at him to listen to her. Luke pulls Sapphires arm and she turns around to face him. Luke could hit her and it would not hurt her as much as this moment did. She was trying as hard as she could but no words would leave her. Luke pulls her across the room. His hand reaches for the door handle. Sapphire loses it. She yanks her arm out of his grip and grabs Luke's shirt to get him to face her. His hand leaves the door handle. He makes an attempt to grab it again. Sapphire rushes forward so that she is against the door, blocking his chance to open it.
"I'm calling for someone to take you off this ship" Luke grumbles and turns to walk to his desk. Sapphire was grasping at her only hope to change his mind. She steps forward and grabs his hand and turns him. She closes her eyes and counts to three before she steps on her tiptoe and kisses him. The only thing that lets her know that she has succeeded is when he kisses her back.
