Behind the Shadows

Angry Campers Everywhere!

The trip back to camp was filled with silence and tension. It was clear that everyone could sense Sapphire bad mood about going back to camp. She hadn't voiced her feelings on the matter but from her stormy expression it was obvious that she did not share the same joy for going back to camp. Sapphire felt like she had failed Jake. She could of argued to stay behind and do the searching herself but she was too weak from not having any food or water for days, or was it weeks? And if she didn't turn up with the others then the camps suspicion of her guilt would grow. The camp saw her as a traitor and thought that she had joined up with Luke. Sapphire dreaded going back to camp but she would just have to swallow her pride and put up with a lot of angry campers.
The campers that had picked Sapphire and her friend up refuses to even look at Sapphire but spoke with ease to the others. She was on a pegasus with a girl from the Hermes cabin and it looked like she was close to shoving Sapphire off the pegasus.
"Ellie says that you lot need to go straight to Chiron as soon as you are back to camp" One of the campers say. Sapphire frowns and and shakes her head in confusion. Ellie can't be at camp. She goes to boarding school throughout the year. If she was back at camp then that would mean..
"Whats the date?" Sapphire asks. In her mind she had only been gone for a few months at most, but then again a lot had happened and maybe time had just slipped by. All the campers turn and give her a slight frown. Even her friends seem a little lost by Sapphire look of confusion.
"July 30th" The girl on her pegasus grumbles. Sapphire gasps and then curses to herself. Had she really been gone for so long? Her absence really did make her look suspicious. All the campers will be back at camp and that meant more people to convince of her innocence.
They arrived at camp the next day and it was busy with campers running here there and everywhere. Annabeth led the way through camp. Grover walked close to Sapphire as if to shield her from all the glares from the campers. She was a mess with blood and dirt all over her clothes. Her face was covered in unhealed bruises and cuts. Her hair was a lost cause and hung down her back limp and broken. She must of looked like a sorry state to the campers. The water had done a good job at healing her wounds but she was still left with a limp and she found it hard to keep walking with such a weak body. Her vision blurred every now and then. Sapphire tried to keep her chin up and stumbled forward. Campers slowly crowded around to get a better look as she walked along with Annabeth and Grover. "traitor" some of the campers mumbled as she walked by. Some attempted to strike her or shove her but she refused to react, that's what they wanted her to do. People who had once been her closest friends now looked at her with either disappointment or hatred. getting their trust back would not be a easy job.
"Ignore then, Saph" Annabeth says in a calm tone. If only it was that easy. The closer they got to the big house the more campers surrounded them and the more angry Sapphire got. They had every right to be angry with her but there was just too many campers now surrounding them. Sapphire was getting more and more stressed and her anger was beginning to flare to life. If she had to pick her worst enemy it would be her own anger. She found it hard to control and she could blame it for getting her into some horrible situations. Yet another camper tries to throw at a hit at Sapphire. Without thinking she catches the campers fist and stops walking. Annabeth and Grover stop too with panicked looks.
"Sapphire, Don't!" Annabeth growls.
The camper yanks her fist back and stumbles back. "You don't belong here" she hisses and other campers nod their heads. Annabeth grabs Sapphire wrist and attempts to pull her away. It was too late though. Sapphire was now angry and had a large group of campers judging her. More campers step forward to stand by the girl who had her her fist caught. "Did Luke not want you?" Someone ask and it's followed by laughter. More and more threats and insults get thrown and Sapphire just stands there watching the angry campers become more and more angry. Annabeth tries some more to pull her away but Sapphire won't budge. This was all her fault and it was because she tried to save the camp. They didn't know that though, how could they? So their anger was understandable. She could take the insults and threats but the violence was something she did not understand. She had once been friends with most of these campers and it was a strange feeling seeing them attempt to hit her and hurt her feelings. A boy leaps forward to hit Sapphire but she is readys and grabs his wrist and throws him to the ground.
"Try that again I dare you" Sapphire finally says. The boy flinches along with the other campers. That's all it takes before all the campers begin yelling at her and try to get at her. Sapphire refuses to hit back and manages to avoid most of the hits. She stumbles back with Annabeth and Grover who are both trying to calm the campers. Annabeth calls to someone but Sapphire can no longer hear them from all the noise.
"That is enough!" A boy yells and then seconds later there is a wall of water between Sapphire and the campers. She lets out a shaky breath and falls to the ground. "What's going on?" Sapphire can't see who has spoken because Annabeth is in that way but she soon steps away. The voice belongs to Percy and he looks shocked when he sees Sapphire sitting on the ground. "Ah"
"We should get to the big house" Annabeth states and gives Sapphire a look as though telling her to get up and follow. Sapphire lets out a sigh and gets up.
"I will take you there since I am able to protect you guys" Percy grins and Sapphire groans. She eyes up him water wall and smirks.
"Just so you know I can do that too" Sapphire boasts and limps passed him. "I worked on my powers a lot this year by teaching Cayden, Nancy and Luke a lesson" Percy is silent for a moment before throwing a load of water at Sapphire. She turns around and growls as water drips off her.
"You were saying?" Percy grins. Annabeth and Grover both sigh and walk on forward. Sapphire turns serious and brushes at her hair with her hand.
"The last time I saw you things got a bit difficult. I'm sorry for storming out" Sapphire clears her throat "Was the girl okay?" Percy smiles and nods.
"She was fine. I just told her that you had to leave early and she told me to tell you that she will share her candy next time" Sapphire laughs "I'm sorry too for even listening to Hermes. Gods can be pricks sometimes"
"The gods are pricks all the time" Sapphire says before dragging Percy along with her to the big house. It was nice to have someone at camp who does not want to hunt her down. Camp was no longer a safe place for her.
