Behind the Shadows

Unforgiving Fish

Will burst out laughing after Sapphire had explained what had happened. Lottie looked like she might throw up. Sapphire was now back on her pegasus and they were all back on track with flying aimlessly through the air. This time however they had a direction to fly aimlessly in. The weird creature had not mentioned Clarisse though so looking for her would be a little bit difficult. The sun was blazing down on the three of them and it was not a pleasant experience.
"There a small village on the coastline over there" Lottie points out and nods in the direction in front of them. Will scrunches his nose and sighs.
"I don't like villages. Everyone always seems to know everyone and their dog" Will mutters. Sapphire chuckles and silently agrees. She had passed through a few villages when she was on the run with Luke, Annabeth and Thalia. As soon as she arrived everyone was talking about them and then the rumours started. They left the next morning with their non existent flees.
"Its the only place with people for miles. We have to try" Lottie tries her best to motivate them.
When they arrive there is no one in sight and the area is so quiet a pin could be heard dropping. Sapphire half expected a tumbleweed to go past them like in the old western movies she had seen.
"Well this is exciting!" Sapphire says sarcasticly and Will snorts. Lottie strolls on ahead ignoring them. Sapphire grabs her backpack and pulls out the photo she had packed. Hopefully they would come across some sort of living soul. The village was just a few wooden cabins, a little fountain and a fishing area. Lottie goes over to the fountain to fill up her water bottle. Sapphire cringes at her, but she keeps her mouth shut.
"HELLO!" Will calls out and is answered with silence. "Fantastic"
"It looks like the place is completely deserted" Sapphire states as she steps up next to him. Lottie stands up from the fountain and looks around. "I wish I had made some missing person posters to pin up. Annoying missing person. Comes to Toolbox and Spanner" Sapphire giggles at herself and the other join in.

"Strangers are not welcome here" A croaky voice booms over their laughter. Sapphire and the others go silents and turn towards the voice. It's a little old woman in and she is holding a large fish in her hands. Doe she intend to hit them with it? That would be a first.
"We mean no harm" Will pipes up with his charming smile and soft words. Now there was something Sapphire could never achieve at. She always did find that part of being a child of Apollo the most tiresome. It was like they had be as bright as the sun and Sapphire was dark side of the moon. The old woman scoffs and glares at them. It looks like she would not be falling for charm.
"Great fishing spot you have here" Lottie chirps. It was her turn to try her charm. The old woman growls and throws her fish at Sapphire. It hits her square in the face. Sapphire falls back a step and catches the fish in her hands.
"Do you intend to steal our fish, little girl?" The old woman barks at Lottie. Considering that Lottie was the daughter of Hermes it would not surprise Sapphire. Luke had once stolen Sapphires left shoe and hair ties just because he could.
"N-no. I would never -" Lottie scrambles back and hides behind Sapphire. Still holding the fish Sapphire looks it over and frowns.
"Why is the fish the colour?" Sapphire asks. The old woman shrugs and avoids eye contact "Poison is a cruel method"Sapphire raises her eyebrows at the woman.
"Dogs are used to catch them" Liar. "Poison is never used to catch them"
"I know it's poison" Sapphire sighs in annoyance. She could sense the pain this fish had been in before dying. Sapphire could feel suffering in the water near the village. "Do you know what it feels like to die from poison?" The old woman shakes her head and hangs her head slightly. "You have the equipment to fish properly so why use poison?"
"The ocean nearly took little Meg's life" The old woman coughs out "He has to pay"
"Who?"
"That's none of your business" The old woman has gotten out another fish and Sapphire takes a step back.
"It would be a good idea to tell us" Sapphire is beginning to lose her patience and it is showing. The fountain bubbles slightly. Will clears his throat and nudges Sapphire. She nods at him to tell him that she already sees it. "The ocean can be an unforgiving place for those who threaten it"
"You kids would not understand our ways"
"Try us" Will pipes in "you would be surprised the amount of stuff we can understand"
"The god of the sea. He did it. He has always been cruel to our village. The waters flood our lands and take our children" The woman explains and spits bitterly at the ground.
"Ah. Well that changes things" Sapphire mutters out. "I can help. Let me clean the water and contact someone and you can help us out too" She smirks at the old woman and wanders over to the ocean line. These people do not deserve such cruelty. Let them live well and happy and they shall not bother you, Poseidon. Sapphire goes over the message again and again in her head to get it across to Poseidon. She also chucks a drachma into the water as a little payment offer. It never felt this awkward with contacting Apollo, but with Poseidon it felt like Sapphire was contacting some distant relative. The water swirls slightly and She takes that as a good sign. Spreading her arms out and picture the ocean as clean and healthy, hoping that She was doing it right. In a matter of minutes the dark deadly water starts to clear and the sapphire blue starts to show through the darkness.
"Now its your turn to help us out" Sapphire states as she approaches the old woman with the picture of Jake in hand. "Have you seen this boy?" When the woman sees the picture she goes a little white.
"He was taken to the grey cave in the woods" The woman replies. The name of the place did not sit well with Sapphire.
"Where are these woods?" The woman points past the village.
"Just over the hill. He was taken few days ago. He came here in an unstable state and was raving about some girl. Then these people came and snatched him away just hours after his arrival" Sapphire nods as she listens.

"Thank you" She smiles at the old woman "Poseidon won't be a bother for now on and please don't punish the fish for his temper" The old woman nods and drops the fish she is holding. Sapphire makes her way towards their hidden Pegasuses. This was the best lead they had had so far. Lottie and Will both look chuffed as they climb onto their pegasus. Sapphire could not blame them. She just proved the charm and smiles were not always the way to go about things. Sometimes playing dirty go you places. Sapphire was no angel.
