Behind the Shadows

Pace Pace Pace

There was a screaming voice in Sapphire's head, It kept on telling her to run, telling her to dig a hole a bury herself while she is in this mess. Luke is, was Sapphire's best friend. She had ruined that completely with her reckless behavior. It was a confusing mess for her. Did she like Luke that way? For the past few months she had been considering Whether she actually hated him or not. Now he thought she liked him as more than a friend. It made her feel slightly sick at the thought. Luke was her childhood best friend! What had she been thinking? Maybe if she had avoided leaving Lukes office for a while longer then she could of convinced him. Nope, Sapphire had go with the stupid way out.
After her terrible decision someone had knocked on the door, and the pair of them had torn out of each other's grip like the other was on fire. Luke was called out to some meeting and Sapphire was left in the office wondering how deep she would have to dig her grave. The only thing she could hope for is that Luke would dismiss the moment they had. Maybe he would just kick her off the ship to avoid the awkward tension. Sapphire would save him the hassle and would throw herself overboard. Every decisions so far made her want to smack her head off a wall. How on earth was she going to get herself of this ship when the time came? How would she be able to look Luke in the eyes and tell him she used him?
The afternoon sun glares through the windows in the office, and it brings Sapphire out of her negative mind. Looking around the office she saw nothing of interest except Lukes locked drawers on his desk. It was not that fact that they were locked, but the fact that there was so many padlocks and keyholes on each drawer. What was in them that he wanted to keep locked up? Sapphire sits on Lukes chair and tugs on the drawers. From the force she hears some object rattle about within. If she was caught nosing around then she would definitely be kicked off the ship. She stops and starts pacing the office like a caged animal. There is a strange smell around her. It smells of fresh oranges and nail polish, not that it bothered her, it was just hard not to notice the smell in the room. The door that leads to the endless hallways creaks open. Sapphire stops pacing and turns her attention to the person entering the room. Its that guy who was in the office last time, when Sapphire had the weird vision. He looks the same and it causes Sapphire to stare. She considered asking him if he was a god. Would he find that offensive? He was helping Luke fight them. Sapphire kept her mouth shut. He walks in and goes to Lukes desk. He acts like Sapphire is not in the room. He takes a set of keys out of his pocket and opens the top drawer. Sapphire slowly and quietly walks up behind him and pears over his shoulder. Disappointment fills her. All the drawer contains in documents and pencil shapens. Maybe Luke was just hiding his untidiness?
"Creeping up behind someone like that will get you into trouble" The guy grumbles. His voice is clear has a slight accent to it, but Sapphire can't put her finger on what accent it could be. She darts back a few steps and lifts her chin.
"I'm Sapphire" She blurts out. Her face heats up and she realizes how loud she said it. The guys grabs a few documents and folds them before shoving them into his backpocket. He turns to face Sapphire. His expression is amused with a hint of grumpiness.
"I know who you are" His reply is so blunt that Sapphire sighs dramatically.
"This is the part where you tell me your name" The guy shrugs and makes a move to walk past Sapphire.
"Names are dangerous. You can just make one up for me" He is about to leave the room.
"How about pain in my a-" The door slams behind him. Sapphire grumbles a few more names that would suit him. Was everyone on the bad side this rude? Before she can go back to pacing she notices that the room has another door, just to the right of Lukes desk. Sapphire walks over to it and gabs the handle. For once in her life she has come across an unlocked door. The door opens with ease. There is no secret lab or pile of treasure on the other side of the door. Its a bedroom, a very tidy and plain room. All it contains is a double bed and large mirror door on the wall which looks like it is the closet. Two bedside tables hold photo frames and a lamp. Sapphire does not need to check the photos to know that this is Luke's room. The three girls standing next to him in the photos are enough to make Sapphire fly out of the room.
"Oh look who got out of her closet!" Nancy's high pitched voice scratches at Sapphires ears. She stumbles across the room and glares at Nancy. She smirks back. "You're not wanted here brat". Sapphire cracks up laughing and holds the desk for support. Nancy stands in the centre of the room wearing a bright green sundress. Seeing her dressed like that makes Sapphire wish she had come with more clothes in her back pack. She was already on her last clean clothes.
Sapphire points to herself and grins. "Me? A brat?" She laughs again. Nancy's smirk is no where to be seen, and it makes Sapphire grin even more. "If I'm not welcome here then why am I still on this ship?" Sapphire can see the gears in Nancy's head working.
"Luke is clearly feeling sorry for your pathetic self" Is that it? Is that all she has got? Sapphire was hoping for something more harsh, just so she could claw the girls eyes out. "you've obviously done something to annoy him, because he is out on the deck pacing and wont speak to anyone" Sapphire frowns and shoves past Nancy. "Hey!" Sapphire ignores her and storms out of the room and runs through the endless hallway. She finds the exit door easily this time. The deck is occupied now with a few monsters and people. Sapphire dodges past them until she sees Luke leaning over the railing staring into the ocean. He looks tormented. Sapphire approaches with caution. Luke does not notice her until she is standing next to him leaning over the railing as well.
"What are you up to Sapphy?" Luke asks. He sounds tired. Sapphire looks up at the glaring sun instead of the ocean. Maybe the pain on the brightness will hide her haunted expression. Is Lying to Luke always going to feel this painful? He lied to her so how can this be so bad?
"Do you remember that time when we rescued that cat from the tree and it followed us all the way home. You wanted to keep it so bad!" Sapphire avoids his question. Was is always this hard to breath or was it the guilt? Luke rubs his hand over his face.
"My mom would never of let that happen. The cat would not of been safe around her" Luke makes the memory turn from good to bad. Sapphire sighs and turns her eyes away from the bright sun. Luke is not a blurry shadow.
"I named it.. What did I name it?" Luke takes his time to reply. Sapphire waits patiently.
"You named it Hades and after that it hissed at you and wandered off".
"Maybe is was Zeus is disguise!" Sapphire giggles at the thought. Luke does not look impressed. Sapphire sighs again and finishes avoiding "I was out of line in your office and i'm sorry"
"Sapphy I - " Luke is cut off by something standing behind Sapphire. He frowns and it causes Sapphire to turn around. Standing infront of her is Cayden, and he looks ready to attack her.
