Behind the Shadows

Out Of Character (Chapter Two - Edited)

The fountain was always a nice place to sit. As Sapphire sat there she couldn't care less about the world around her. In her head she pictured herself as a normal completely mortal girl texting on her phone, or sitting with other normal friends. Sapphire didn't have a phone of course. Unless she wanted a few dozen monsters tracking her down. That was not on her to do list. Jake had stopped annoying her a few hours ago when Percy had been released from the infirmary. She didn't need to guess where Jake was. No doubt Jake would be glued to Percy's side with pen and paper in his hands, ready to note down the gossip.
Luke had volunteered to show Percy around camp so Sapphire had not seen him all day. She was starting to feel lonely with everyone busy with the new kid. It made her realise just how much she depended on her friends company. Sapphire carried on daydreaming until she saw Grover wander past dragging two large bags full of swords and arrows. Sapphire leapt up and jogged up to him.
"Hey, Need a hand?" Sapphire asked. Grover nearly jumped out of his skin. He stopped and turned to face Sapphire and studied her for a moment, probably wondering why she was asking to help. Sapphire was never one to offer a helping hand. In her mind she thought if you are a demigod or even a satyr you have to learn to look out for yourself. Slowing down to help someone out was only going to get you killed. Grover thought for a moment, then nodded and handed a bag to her. They both walked on forward towards the weaponry cabin.
"Tough night last night?" Sapphire asked. Grover half heartedly laughed.
"You have no idea" Grover replied with an awkward chuckle. "Just glad I succeeded and he is here safe".

Halfway to the cabin Sapphire noticed that she was getting weird looks from other campers. She knew exactly what it was all about. They were thinking the same as Grover was. Why is Sapphire Willow helping someone. Truth be told she was bored and she needed a distraction from all the thoughts about the odd new guy.

"He is not like the rest of us" Sapphire mumbled. Grover frowned at her. " I mean he does not fit into any of the cabins and I get a weird feeling off of him" Grover was silent for a moment considering her words.
"I think he is more powerful. At least that's what i think" Grover finally relied with a shrug. Sapphire frowns and turns her head to look at him
"Powerful how?" They reached the cabin and Grover went to unlock the door.
"You were talking about getting a weird feeling off him, i'm saying you might of just been sensing that" Grover stated as he yanked the door open. "Thats what I felt anyway".
Sapphire sighed knowing no one would understand what she was talking about. Grover disappeared into the cabin for a second then emerged out again and stuck out his hand for the bag Sapphire was holding. She gave it to him and brushed her hands together. When Grover re-emerges from the cabin he turns around to lock the door.
"Is that what you felt?" Grover asks as he turned to face her.
"Yeah, I guess" Sapphire lies and gives a slight smile.
"Thats that done. Want to help me out with cleaning up litter?" Grover asked. His face lit up with hope. Sapphire wished for a miracle to get out of this one. She hated litter duty with a passion. She had only done it the other day and still felt irritated at the thought of it.

"SAPPHIRE!" Someone yelled. Sapphire thanked the gods for the miracle. She wanted to kiss the person who had shouted her name, and had just saved her from picking up litter.
"Sorry Grover i gotta go" She chirped as she turned and pranced away down the path.
"Maybe next time?" Grover shouted after her. Sapphire raised her arm in the air and gave Grover the thumbs up.

Sapphire ran in the direction the voice had come from. It was in the direction of the arena. Her shoes crunched on the ground as she ran past other campers. Some stopped to smile and wave at her, while other frowned in annoyance. Most of them were from the Ares cabin.
As she neared Arena and reached the entrance. She heard laughter and multiple voices. Sapphire put one foot in front of the other and entered the arena. In the middle stood Luke, Jake, the Stoll brothers and Percy. Sapphire instantly took her thought back. She didn't want to kiss any of them. As she neared them the laughter continued. They were all holding swords. It made her nervous because she was unarmed. Luke was the one to see her first and waved her over.
"I was just talking about you!" Luke says. The other boys laughed again. Sapphire frowns at them each in turn.
"I dread to think" Sapphire replied feeling nervous. She stopped just before them and crossed her arms.
"I was telling Percy about that time you nose dived into the fountain" They all burst out laughing again.
"It wasnt that funny really! Who called for me?"Sapphire muttered. The memory was more painful than funny. She had been walking to her cabin with Luke and while doing that she was searching through her shoulder bag for her mirror because Luke had said that she had chocolate on her face. During it all she had forgotten where the fountain was and found herself falling into it with a big splash. Her nose had been tomato red for the rest of the evening.
"It was funny" Luke said with the most serious voice he could hold. " I called you. I need you to know your cabin is on my team for capture the flag in ten minutes".
