Behind the Shadows

Power Over Friendship (Chapter Four - edited)

Sapphires head was on fire. Not literally but it felt like it. She opened her eyes slowly and carefully. Someone screaming had woken her up, but that was not what was hurting her head she knew that much. Once her eyes were fully open she noticed that she was in the infirmary. It was very common for a demigod to wake up in the infirmary and have no clue why. For Sapphire this had happened before and she still could not remember why. Sapphire sat up and slowly climbed out of the bed. She looked down at what she was wearing and cringed. She was still wearing her fighting gear and it was covered in mud and plenty of dried blood. This told her that she had been knocked out in capture the flag, and it was clear that no one had bothered to clean her up.

After inspecting herself she waltzed straight out of the infirmary. She was desperate for a shower and fresh clothes. Sapphire decided the best place to go would be to her cabin. Walking there was weird every person she passed stared at her. She began to speed up her pace to avoid the stares. She kept her head down trying to attract less attention. This was not the best plan because not seeing what was in front of her she walked straight into someone. Sapphire gasped and sprang back while looking up to the person who she had walked into. Relief filled her when she saw it was Luke. The look on his face drained all the relief she felt. He looked odd. He looked completely broken.
"Luke?" Sapphire whispered. Luke smiled sadly, then stepped towards her and wrapped her in his arms. Sapphire tensed all over. She was just about to burst from worry. He let go of her and then took her hand.
"Come with me" Luke choked out before he led her away towards the forest. Sapphire looked back at the cabins longingly. She just wanted fresh clothes. What she was wearing made her look as though she had just killed someone and then rolled about in a pile of mud.
Luke led her to the creek. It looked beautiful from the sun shining down on it through the trees. Luke let go of her hand and sat down beside the water. Sapphire did the same.

"Before I tell you I need you to know i'm sorry and that I have my reasons" Luke spoke clearly. Sapphire shifted uncomfortably. This was not like Luke and it really worried her.
"Luke i don't understand" She replied with a frown creasing her face.
"I've done something bad, Saphy" Luke closed his eyes and began to fidget with his hands.
"What have you done?". Luke took a deep breath and looked her straight in the eye. He was quiet for a moment before whispering something that made Sapphire go cold.

"I'm the lightning thief" He whispered and dropped his eyes to the ground. Sapphire gasped and stood up completely in shock.
"You're lying!" Luke stood up too and pacing.
"You know when i'm lying, Saphy!" He was right she did and he was not lying. "Everyone thinks Percy is the thief so Chiron has sent him on quest and if he succeeds then he is due back tomorrow". Sapphire frowned. How long had she been in the infirmary for?
"How long was I in the infirmary for?" Sapphire asked confused.
"Over a week" Sapphire gasped. She had been out for over a week and no one had bothered to clean her up.
"What happened? I can't remember anyone knocking me out"
"Thats because no one did" This took her by surprise. No one just collapses for no reason. At this moment in time that was a subject to be talked about at another time.
"You have to tell Chiron! Maybe the gods will forgive you" Saphire rushed out. Luke smiled sadly at her.
"I don't want them to forgive me, Saphy! I want to build an army and fight against them" Luke announced. Sapphire staggered back. Completely shocked. This was not her Luke.
"No! you can't" She cried at him. Luke stared at her. "Please just don't".
"I hate them, Sapphire i really do!" Luke voice cracked. "You Know that"
"Then go!" Sapphire whispered as she brushed a hand down her face. Feeling frustrated she kicked at the ground.
"What?" Luke looked shaken. He takes a step towards her and his face pales slightly.
"GO!" She shouted. "Clearly I wasn't important enough to you if you couldn't even tell me before". Sapphire wanted to hit him. Really, really hard.
"I'm sorry" He whispered. Luke bowed his head and would not look at her.
"Sorry you are a lousy best friend or sorry because you are going to ruin mine and everyone else's life?" She was physically shaking now.
"I'm not going to ruin everyones lives, i'm going to make them better. Isn't it time demi gods got the power they deserve?". Sapphire could not believe what she was hearing. Luke had lost his mind. It hurt her that he had kept all of this from her. So much emotion was flowing through her that she wasn't sure how long she could stand up for.
"Do that and we are done" She hissed. Her ears were ringing and her hands would not stop shaking. Luke stared at her for a moment in shock.
"What? Sapphire, no. We have been best friends since before we could walk" Luke growled.
"Then don't do it" Sapphire growled back.
"I can't!".
Sapphire let out a cry in frustration. He was going to choose power over their friendship. Sapphire was starting to find it hard to breath. She heard a splash from the creak but ignored it. Her emotions were going crazy she let them build and build until she knew she was about to hit Luke. She took a deep breath and lifted her arm to shove him away him, as she did this the creek formed into a huge wave and threw itself right at Luke. Sapphire screamed, looking around expecting to see Percy but there was no one. The water had thrown Luke onto the ground with a painful sounding thump. He sat up coughing and spitting out water. Sapphire stared at the water which was now flowing back into the creek. Her head began to burn again like it had been when she had woken up in the infirmary but it was far worse now. She cried out and fell to the ground in pain. She sat there holding her knees to her face screaming for the pain to go away.
"Sapphire!" She heard Luke shout. She looked up and gasped in shock. She was surrounded by a wall of water. This was not right. If Percy was not even at camp then how could this be happening. She reached out to touch the water but as soon as she touched it fell with a huge splash and flowed back into the creek. She stared at the ground feeling completely lost.

"Sapphire" Another voice spoke. It was Chiron and he looked shell shocked. "I think we need to talk". Sapphire wiped away stray tears on her cheek. She looked up at Chiron and nodded at him. Standing up she followed him. She didn't look back at Luke, and she knew that she could never forgive him for this.
