Behind the Shadows

Jake was completely soaking and kept on making weird gagging noises when the water splashed all over his face. It was amusing to watch for Sapphire who was also looking like drenched cat. She was not complaining though because the experience of swimming with dolphins was awesome. Jake, however was not so amused. For the past hour he had been complaining about having cold feet, cold hands and cold everything. The list was endless for him and after a while Sapphire could no longer hear him. She now knew that they were not lost because the dolphins knew exactly where they were going. The only problem was that whatever direction they went they still ended up smack bang in the middle of the ocean. It was frustrating and a complete mystery. Either the dolphins were playing tricks or the god of the sea was using as some kind of joke. There was no way on earth that she would ever summon help from Poseidon because if he was the reason for this situation then that would be what he wanted. A reaction. For now Sapphire would remain calm and cold, very cold. There was no reason to jump to conclusions if there was currently no danger.
"We don't have any food" Jake grumbles. "We don't have and source of warmth and we have nowhere to sleep without drowning" It is like he read her mind and decided to list problems that would make her reconsider being stubborn.
"It's not that cold" Sapphire grumbles back while rubbing her checks to summon some warmth. Jake growls at her. "What can I do about it?"
A silence forms between them. A silence full of deep thinking. Jake starts rambling on about Greek mythology facts. Something about horses and wings. It brought up a thoughts about the Pegasus back at camp. Sapphire was not their biggest fan. They avoided her and she avoided them. There was no particle reason why she disliked them she just felt no connection to them. Poseidon was the creator of horses and that was probably why Percy had a strange fascination towards them. They loved him and never made any attempts to bite him and buck him away. They loved doing that to Sapphire. Jake is currently staring at her and she notices that she has stopped swimming and all eyes are on her. Her thoughts clear away and she comes back to her senses.
"What?" She asks. Jake scoffs and splashes water at her.
"Did you hear a word I said?" He replies. Sapphire smashes her lips together and diverts her eyes away.
"No". Jake laughs to himself.
"I was talking about the fact that children of Poseidon can summon a Pegasus" Jake announces looking smug "I actually listen in our Greek mythology class unlike you"
Sapphire stares at him not sure whether to slap him or kiss him. She would never admit out loud that he was right. She never listened in class. Most of the time she caught up with sleep in Greek mythology. Why learn it if you can live it? The fact that he knew this information was a great relief the only problem was is that she had no idea how to summon a Pegasus.
"You are forgetting something here" Sapphire sighs " I have no idea how any of these magic powers work. I can't even bloody swim!" Sapphire pats the dolphin she is holding onto to prove her point. Jake swallows and looks from the dolphin to her noticing the problem."Have you ever seen Percy do it?" Jake quizzes. Sapphire flicks though her memory and finds nothing. She shakes her head. "Maybe you need to picture a Pegasus in your head and then just think of the work help"
"Does it have to be a Pegasus I know?" Sapphire asks. Not sure why she asked because neither of them clearly have no clue.
"How should I know?"
"Your the one who is teachers pet!"
"Am not!" Jake splashes her. Sapphire splashes him back.
"Are too!" Sapphire giggles "Chirons pet". Jake huffs.
"Just try it" his voice is quiet and is laced with a pleading.
Sapphire sighs and gives in. She pictures one of the Pegasus from camp in her head. She avoids thinking of any of the ones that had bitten her in the past. At this moment in time she really could do without being bitten again by one of those horses on wings. She summons a message of help and pushes it mentally towards the Pegasus. Sapphire sighs and splashes Jake again.
"Done""Now we wait". The dolphins settle beside them as though they know what is happening. They sings to each other and spray water at one another. It was weird how cheery the dolphins are.
"So I've got nice eyes, hmm?" Sapphire groans and lets out an embarrassed laugh.
"I only said it to get you to stop being grumpy""I was not grumpy I was just annoyed at you!"
"Same thing" Sapphire grumbles and pats the dolphin. Jake mumbles something to himself and then lets go of the dolphin to float on his back. Show off.
A few hours pass and no sign of any Pegasus appears. The pair of them chatter together and discuss more ideas. In attempt to rid themselves of boredom Jake attempts and fails to teach Sapphire how to swim. Jake gained a few more bruises and Sapphire was left with the need to whack her head on a wall.
"We could always just make a home out here" Sapphire states feeling hopeless "Maybe we could find some mermaids and live with them" Jake laughs.
"Mermaids aren't real" Jake replies.
"Then so are monsters and gods". Jake's smile fades and goes silent. Sapphire groans and stretches her legs feeling restless. A demigods ADHD was a curse. "Truth or dare?"
Truth" Jake sighs.
"Who is the better twin, Me or Percy?" Sapphire grins. Jake stares at her as though she is an idiot.
"Percy". Sapphire gasps.
"But i'm the pretty one?"
"Nope". Sapphire laughs.
"You think Percy is pretty?" She continues to laugh and Jake just glares at her. "Dare"
"I dare you Sapphire Willow to say you love you daddy so so much" Sapphires laugh is cut short and she frowns.
"Which one?" She asks and points to the sun the the water surrounding them. Jake flicks his eye to the water and gives her an evil grin.
"No" Sapphire moans and shoves his shoulder. Jake Grabs her hand and pull her away from the safety of the dolphin she was holding. "Jake, What are you doing?" Her voice goes high from the edge of fear.
"Say it" is all he replies with as he takes her further away from the dolphins. Her breathing hitches as she starts to panic. If she went under the water she could breath, but there would be no way she could stop herself from sinking to the bottom. Jake gives her a nudge.
"I.. I love my daddy Poseidon so so much". Jake bursts out laughing and his grip tightens on her arms so she cant slap him. The water around the ripples and it makes Sapphire look around expecting to see the dolphins approaching them. The dolphins are right where they left them. The water is rippling on its own. "Jake"
"Yeah" Jake chirps after he is finished laughing.
"Look at the water". He does and a frown forms on his face. A black form appears far below them slowly circling them. The dolphins make a noise before the dive under water and desert Jake and Sapphire. She looks up at the sun and huffs. "You had to pick Poseidon didn't you!"
It was clear that her father had heard her declare her daughterly love. The dark form starts to come closer to them. Its larger than a normal fish. Maybe it was a whale.
"It was a joke!" Jake hisses. "We don't even know if this thing has anything to do with him""It appeared right after I said it!" Sapphire yells. The dark form gets closer and closer. "Oh gods, Oh gods" She grips at Jake's shirt in panic. Jake is silent for a moment.
"Looks like you confident swagger self is gone now that you're in real danger" Jake says sounding smug that he is now the calm cool one.
"I'm panicking because we are going to die!"
The form gets larger the closer it gets. Sapphire dips her head under the water and gasps. It's not a fish of any form. It's a massive ship. It floats underwater with ease towards her. Sapphire lifts her head out the water and screams a load of inaudible words at Jake. The tips of the sails peak through the water followed by the rest of the boat. Sapphire and Jake stay completely still while gripping to each other like elastic. They are silent while they stare at the beast of a ship. After a few minutes a huge rope gets thrown out of the ship toward them. They make no attempt to grab it. The thought of being killed was still alive in Sapphire mind and she was sure Jake was thinking the same thing. It is clear that the ship has life on it from all the little forms scrambling about shouting at one another. Sapphire cant hear a word but she is sure they are talking about the demigods on their dinners menu.
"This is still your fault" Sapphire whispers. Jake does not reply.
"Get on board you morons!" A voice shouts at them from the ship. Morons? Sapphire could not recall ever being called a moron."How do we know you aren't monsters?" Jake yells back. There is silence for a moment.
"Your daddy loves you too" The voice answers.
"God damn it!" Sapphire growls. Jake cracks up in laughter. Sapphire shakes with anger and grabs the rope. She turns to looks at Jake and glares daggers at him. He continues to laugh and grabs the rope too.
Once on board they get swarmed by people. They all look normal enough except for their unusual pale skin. They don't make any attempts to eat Sapphire and Jake. She lets out a breath of relief . A girl steps forward and grins. She looks about their age. Her hair is green and it makes Sapphire stare. It looks natural. She is small in height but she still taller than Sapphire. Her pretty face make Sapphire step closer to Jake.
"Hello, Sapphire" She smiles and turns to Jake "Hello, Jake. We have been expecting you two"
