Behind the Shadows

To Drown or Not To Drown

For the past few months Sapphire had been picturing Cayden or Luke throwing her over board. Being thrown overboard by a giant wave had not crossed her mind. Even though she could breath and she could swim pretty good now, the shock and fear was what made the whole experience very frightening. All around her was just black and cold. It was like being locked in a very small and dark place. Even though she had lots of space, the darkness made Sapphire feel claustrophobic and trapped. No one on the ship would know she had gone overboard, and if they did, not very many of them would volunteer to come to the rescue. She was stuck in the darkness of the ocean. Unable to drown and to frightened to swim about. With the ocean to dark to sea about, Sapphire could not risk moving. The currents would be deadly and Sapphire wasn't sure if even she could survive them.
It felt like she was slowly becoming a ice cube. The water was very cold. Usually Sapphire didn't feel the temperature when she was in water. However now she could and it it made her wonder what was causing it. Even her clothes were soaked and that only happened if she allowed it. The only demigod ability of Poseidon she was experiencing was being able to breath under water.
Sapphire could feel herself slowly descending lower in the ocean. Her legs kick about in attempt to keep herself level. It felt like something was tugging on her, pulling her down. Her arms flap about helplessly, trying anything just to stop whatever was dragging her down. There was nothing to help her and the feeling of hopelessness floods her. Sapphire wraps her arms around her waist in attempt to bring some warmth. She can feel her hair flowing above her head and it hurt slightly from the speed she was being pulled down at. It felt like there was a thousand knots in her hair, and someone was yanking a brush through them. Her legs stop moving and her mind tells her to give into the pull. And she does.
The lower she get, the more she can feel the pressure of the ocean pressing on her lungs. Was a child of Poseidon suppose to feel this? None of what she was feeling ticked the boxes. Sapphire's breaths were shorter now and it took more effort, which was tiring her out. Her whole body was numb from the cold water. Her eyes were closing and she could no longer hear the water splashing about in her ears. Was this what dying felt like? This felt like a cruel way to die. Was this just a game for the gods. Who can kill Sapphire first. Was that it? Were they all sitting up in Olympus watching her while falling over laughing. Maybe joining Luke's army had been the right thing to do. Maybe she could save camp, but then stay with Luke and prove to the gods that she is force not be made a fool of. She would still be a traitor, but she would be safe. Sapphire didn't have what Percy had. Percy had the godly parent and others who liked him and looked out for him. Sapphire had Apollo and Artemis, but she also had three big and very powerful gods who hated her entire existence. The right side in this war was not safe for Sapphire to be on. It was strange to admit that her safe place was with the bad guys. Luke was not bad though. He was lost and was controlled by his hatred for the gods.
Something near causes the water to ripple around Sapphire. It might just be a shark. What if the sea creature want to eat her? Nothing else seemed to be going well. Her breathing is quicker now and shallower. The pressure of the ocean felt like it was crushing her lungs. The more she breaths in, her breaths become smaller and smaller until she starts to panic and spasm. Her legs kick out and her hands grip at her throat even though it wont help. Her mouth opens and closes, and only water flows in. It rushes down her throat and in to her lungs, where it slowly fills up her lungs. How was this possible. She was drowning. Her frozen body forces her eyes to close and remain shut. Her hands stop ripping at her throat and the follow her arms as they fall. Her legs also stop kicking and her whole body stops moving and sways with the water.
Something grips her arms but her mind barely registers it. Her arms are to numb to feel what kind of grip it is. It could be sharks teeth or and octopus's arm. Her body feels like someone has flicked the off switch and she it powering down. Sapphire coughs and then watches the group of bubbles that flow out, they rise past her head and disappear out of sight. Her body sways with more force because of the grip on her arm. It must be pulling on her. She can no longer move to be able to fight off its grip. Her mind goes blank and she finally switches off. Her lifts her up and head towards a door to go inside.
"None of this make sense, but you lucky Noah saved you" Luke mutters. Noah? If this Noah saved her, then how did her survive the pressure of the ocean. Sapphire hadn't seen much under the water, but she did know that she had been deep. She barely survived the crushing pressure. Anyone who was not a child of Poseidon would of been crushed. Who was this Noah?
