The Heroes of The Camps

Awakening

My eyes fluttered open but refused to focus. All I could make out was colour which wasn't particularly helpful because everything was white. I heard footsteps near me and someone waved what I guessed was their hand across my vision until I was eventually able to focus.

"You okay?" A kind male voice asked and I blinked a few times, noticing I was in what seemed to be a marble hall with partitions of white curtains hanging from the ceiling.

I pushed myself up on my elbows and sat, looking at the boy with confusion. "Where am I?" I demanded.

He laughed softly and jotted down a few notes on the clipboard he carried. "Answers will come in time. For now we need to take it one step at a time. You've been out for over a day. Can you stand?"

I nodded and slipped from under the white sheets of the bed I had been lying on. Standing easily. I looked down at my feet that had been a shock of cold when I stood on the cold stone floor and my eyes widened. I was wearing my favourite dark red jeans but they were covered in mud and had the horrible ripped gash that I normally covered with my boots was visible. I looked at the boy I guessed was a junior doctor of some sort and all the memories came flooding back.

The fall.

The wind spirits.

The chariot.

It all hit me like a truck to the chest and I sat down on the bed. Hard.

The boy rushed over with a concerned frown. "Are you alright? What happened?" He asked.

"This is a mental institute, isn't it? I've been put here for my hallucinations?"

He laughed. "They're not hallucinations. It was all real."

"Oh." I said. "I mean... Awesome!"

I was pretty sure he was just a bonkers as I was.

He grinned. "Come on, if you're feeling alright then I'll take you to dinner where your friends are waiting."

"Huh?"

"I'll explain on the way. You okay to go?"

I nodded and stood, brushing one of the multiple layers of dirt from the front of my jeans. "Let's go!"

The boy who introduced himself as Rowan Collins walked me to the dining pavilion past a bunch of rather fantastical equipment and gave me the crash course on Greek Demigods for Imbeciles.

"So... dad was a god?" I repeated.

"Yeah, my dad is Apollo." He told me, kicking at a clump of dirt on the path.

"And you're sure this isn't just a mental asylum?"

He laughed. "Pretty sure." We walked into the pavilion and he pointed towards a table where a group of kids with the same mischievous smile and crooked nose sat with Dani and Ira sitting down the end. They both waved to me and I walked over to them.

"You're awake!" Dani grinned, moving over and letting me sit beside her.

"Finally, right?" I laughed, looking across at Ira who still had his head hung as he picked at his meal. I leaned across the table and tapped him on the shoulder. He looked up but quickly looked back down at his chicken sandwich and Dr Pepper. "What? No 'hello'?" I asked.

He looked at me pointedly. "Hello!" He grinned mockingly before looking back down at his food.

I looked to Dani. "Is he still pulling the amnesia thing?"

She nodded. "I don't think he's kidding though. He hasn't spoken to me since we got here."

I leaned across the table and tugged on a lock of Ira's hair to get his attention. "Why are you ignoring her?" I demanded.

"I'm not." He mumbled.

"I don't care if you've lost your memory, she's still your girlfriend! I'm still your friend!" I told him.

He shook his head. "I don't know you."

I groaned. "Come on! How can you not remember the time we put toothpaste in Harriet Morgan's soda or that time that we chained Harry's motorbike up a tree or that one time when you gave me all your allowance for a month-" Dani elbowed me sharply in the ribs. "Okay so maybe not that last one but the rest of that was real! Very real! We're best buddies, Ira! Like it or not you're stuck with me!"

He gave me a small smile before turning back to his food and Dani let out a small sigh that I echoed. I hadn't realised that in just two days without Phoebe Dean the mood could get so down.

Suddenly everyone began to get up from their seats and began jogging towards where a flickering light lit the settling night. I gave Dani a questioning look.

"Campfire." She told me, grabbing my hand a dragging me after the line of teenagers, but not before I had grabbed Ira and dragged him after us.
The campfire was a brilliant fiery purple as everyone sang energetically but a new light quickly joined the purple and stares turned to above my head.

I looked up to see a golden sun floating above me.

Notes
