The Rebirth

The Fates and the Girl

There is a girl, and she is making a decision.
The Fates await patiently. They had known, once upon a time, what the end result of her decision was. They knew all, saw all, felt all- within reason, of course. For example, they know nothing of the Afterlife. Also, they are not Destiny themselves, only the enforcer of Destiny’s rules. And, of course, there still must be free will- at least in the present. There must be more than one outcome. Even though they know whether the coin is going to land on heads, the option of tails must be there. So although they had known the future before- what she was deciding now-, their memory at the moment is blank, because it is the present, and they calmly sit until the moment of decision passes.
They sit for seconds. Minutes. Maybe a couple of months. Time is quite different and worthless, to the Fates.
Many mortals and demigods and occasionally gods complain that fate is unfair. They misunderstand. The Fates aren’t here to be purposefully cruel. They are here for duty. They do what Destiny tells. Their job is to know and enforce. Not to act. They are the balance. The law is equally fair- or, rather, “unfair”- on both sides, and for that to happen, they must be neutral. They are neither Good or Bad, but simply… Are.
The girl has decided.
Ah. Of course.
They remember now.
One of them finds the string of life that had once been uncut. Upon applying it to her loom, it refills, elongating and growing and shortening until it quivers again. The once silver color is slightly tinged this time with a new glow.
The other begins to measure it, with a mild interest as she goes. It is true that the Fates knew all, just not all at once- she could see the many paths and tangles and interweaving strings that this girl had in her lifeline. She could see the many choices ahead of her. But, she could not see the decisions themselves. Before measuring the string, yes, Destiny would have whispered to her what was to come; after she measured the string, yes, she would remember most surely what she had remembered before. But now free will was in motion, and she could only wait with foreshadowing for what was to come.
The last Fate cuts the string and leans back to admire it. They begin to roll up the remains. They are now done with her story.

Notes

Hi, guys. Please comment if this Prologue confused you! It's just a little introduction to the Fates; they're supposed to be complicated and a bit confusing, but if it's too complicated, please let me know so I can fix future Fate chapters. (( Don't worry; most of the chapters aren't at all like this. :)) Thanks so much for reading.
