Observing the Split
The Fates watched from the side.
They watched as Elena Rodriguez was carried up from the sand and tucked gently into the car. They watched the very glistening car of gray as it revved up and drove slowly through the streets. They watched as the boy Nico di Angelo and Jason Grace passed the line of cars, including the car of gray, focused on their tasks.
They especially watched Nico’s face as this event occurred, ready to watch him glance up, perhaps, or look around.
They were not disappointed.
The Measurer continued to measure out the string, thumbing a certain knot in the silvery material, one where the silver mixed and clashed with another string, one of metallic gold. She pressed down on the knot hard and watched the gray car carefully drive away from Nico di Angelo and Jason Grace. Once it was finally out of clear sight, she released the knot. Then they all vanished.
And that is all that will be said of that particular afternoon in Split.
