Solangelo One-Shots

Solar Panels and Hot Cocoa

Nico was beginning to hate winter.

He had always liked it before. But now, winter was becoming a chore. A set of things that Nico had never had to do until he got involved with the dorkiest, sweetest, and most confoundingly annoying son of Apollo.

Will
, Nico thought.

The one word brought a chill to his neck through the thick scarf he was wearing. Just the thought of his face made Nico weak at the knees and flushed his cheeks red with embarrassment. His beautiful blonde hair always seemed inviting to Nico, waiting for him to run his hands through it. His gorgeous blue eyes, straight out of a California surfer bro that got all cloudy and dark whenever he was working on healing someone. Okay, so he wasn’t Apollo, but he was his son, which meant he was pretty dam attractive.

But if Nico had learned anything from his experience with the son of Nemesis, Ethan Nakamura, he knew that good things always came with a price. Will was absolutely useless after the month of October. Will had been a trooper, putting up with all the death boy jokes on Halloween, and Nico had shadow-traveled them to Italy for dinner as a reward for Will being nice to him.

Nico still got butterflies when he thought about how good Will had looked that night. Never mind the fact that Will had told him he liked it when Nico spoke in Italian. But Nico was getting sidetracked, and realized that he was walking away from the Apollo cabin instead of towards it when his foot caught a shoe.

Nico tumbled onto the snow-covered ground and landed with a crunch! As he packed down the thick snow. At least he hadn’t hit solid, frozen soil and given himself a couple bruises. Then he realized who he had tripped over: Will.

“Will!” He admonished, “What in Hades are you currently doing?”

“Soaking up the sun,” Will responded in monotone, like he hadn’t heard Nico fall over. But Nico couldn’t help but detect a little smirk in his voice. His boyfriend was trying not to laugh at him.

That got Nico’s cheeks warm.

The son of Apollo was lying down in open snow-angel position, stretching his arms out like a solar panel, trying to collect every neutrino from the sun he could. His eyes were closed, and he had hidden his hair under the hood of his winter coat.

“How long have you been out here?” the son of Hades asked wearily.

“More than a short time and less than enough,” Will responded in that monotone voice, trying not to laugh.

“Poetic,” Nico observed, “You’re better than your dad at that, you know.”

This time, Will did let out a laugh. A short burst of energy that reminded Nico of a ray of summer sun melting the snow around a flower. His eyes opened for a millisecond, and Nico rejoiced at all the colors he caught with that quick glance.

“Come on, Light Beam,” Nico grudgingly said, “get up. We have things to do.”

“No, we don’t,” Will pointed out, back to the monotone with his eyes closed. Nico hated that. With eyes that pretty, Will shouldn’t have been allowed to keep them closed.

“It’s Sunday,” the son of Apollo pointed out, “and that was a horrible ‘Sun God’ joke, Death Boy. ‘Light Beam’? Really? Is that the best you can do? I know you’re better than that.”

Nico couldn’t resist him at this point. He needed to stare into those perfect blue eyes for longer than a moment. So, he stalked over to his boyfriend as quietly as he could and got on his stomach next to Will. He craned his head over his boyfriend’s face and placed his lips lightly on his nose.

Nico got what he wanted. Will’s eyes opened, and Nico couldn’t help but laugh. He was so unexplainably happy when he looked into Will’s eyes that he couldn’t contain himself. Will joined in on the laughter, and after a few moments, Will placed his lips on Nico’s, both of them still on the ground.

Nico was the one closing his eyes this time, but then, Will released, going back to his original position. His eyes were closed, emotionless, and he was lying very still.

“Oh, come on!” Nico protested as he got back onto his feet, “Enough sunlight!”

“Never,” Will responded with a yawn, keeping his eyes closed and his eye lids pointed at the sun, “I don’t get much sunlight this time of year anyways, Nico, you should let me be.”

“Just because your dad’s Apollo doesn’t mean you’re solar-powered. With that grey coat on you look like actual solar panel!”

Nico was getting even more exasperated now, but his boyfriend just said,

“Why do you think I’m spreading my arms out? Because I like snow angels? Or because I like lumens? You decide. Besides, everyone needs Vitamin D, and right now I am soaking in my daily supplement.”

“They fortify milk these days,” Nico retorted, offended, “I’m not that old, you know.”

“I wasn’t trying to make an age joke,” Will said honestly, opening his eyes and apologizing with them to his boyfriend. Nico hated that he accepted the apology.

“Besides, you take godly supplements every day like everyone else does,” Nico reasoned, “please? Get up. For me?”

“Hmm,” Will hummed in musing, “I don’t know. I mean, why do you think I worry about you spending too much time in the Underworld in one visit, eh? You come back paler than a ghost on an Iris-Message.”

“Ugh,” Nico groaned, annoyed, “you’re going to sick sitting in the cold snow like that!”

“That is a complete sham and I refuse to hear it. I'm a doctor, don't question me on this, baby,” Will said matter-of-factly, and Nico was about to pick Will up and throw him into the Hades cabin so that they could sit together.

“You are so annoying, William. Get. UP.” Nico said, now thoroughly annoyed.

“Love you too,” Will replied sweetly, whistling a familiar tune Nico should have known. Then he recognized it. ‘This Little Light of Mine.’

Nico got flustered, his cheeks red, and lost his train of thought, and Will smiled, causing Nico to remember why he was still out in the cold. So, he walked the two steps back over to Will, and laced his fingers into his, lying next to him as their coats rubbed shoulders.

“Mm,” Will hummed, “that’s better. Just lie down. You won’t even feel the cold after a while. I’ve been out here for maybe an hour and now I can’t feel a thing but the sun.”

Nico had other plans. With the slightest concentration, he shadow-traveled them both onto Nico’s bed in the Hades cabin so that they could continue lying down together. He snapped his fingers and the central heating system (the heat was made by burning the skeletons of the defeated) kicked on for the cabin, instantly making it nice and toasty.

“You suck,” Will uttered as he opened his eyes. Nico clapped his hand twice and the doors locked, preventing Will from leaving him to lay in the snow again.

“You really suck,” Will repeated, and Nico turned Will’s joke on him, saying sweetly,

“Aww, I love you too, babe. Now, hot cocoa, cider or coffee?”

“Cocoa, please,” Will smiled, and they both let out a quick laugh as Nico walked towards the back of the cabin. It was all one room, but the bed was on one side and the kitchen was on the other. Nico often liked to have meals alone, so he had a kitchen put in when Annabeth designed the cabin so, so long ago.

Nico made himself a hot pomegranate-apple cider and made Will his cocoa (with mini marshmellows) and walked back to the bed, where Will had taken off his boots and wrapped himself in a blanket.

“Typical,” Nico scoffed with a grin, and he handed Will his mug. Nico grabbed the Hephaestus-TV remote and turned on some sappy, old romantic movie. They cuddled closer and Will kissed Nico’s freshly washed hair like a blessing he was giving him.

“I love you,” said the son of Apollo.

“I know you do,” Nico said, leaning his head against Will’s broad shoulder.

Just then, the conch horn sounded for lunch. Neither of them moved.

“You wanna just chill in my cabin for a while?” Nico asked him.

“Chill?” Will asked, “Nico, if I had wanted to chill, I would have stayed outside.”

“Ugh, yeah, whatever,” Nico said, admitting defeat in the pun war, “would you like to stay for lunch?”

Will answered him by putting his mug down, caressing Nico’s face with both his hands, and kissing him until Nico felt like melting into water, just like the snow outside.
