The Other Stories

The Gloves

The tie was far too tight, but my father insisted that the horrid purple paisley tie was going to be worn today. The suit itself was nice, one of the block ones that officials would wear. My father kept telling me, without taking his hand from my shoulder, that today I would get an important power. Today, he was more excited about getting my glove than I was.
I felt completely calm, except the slight annoyance with my father's ramblings. My mother smiled widely, like her pride and joy was going off the save the world. Quite the exaggeration, considering I just turned fourteen this morning.
The three of us were walking to my ceremony. All the other people with the same birthday as me were getting our gloves today. Of course, I knew I was first in line. Having the last name 'McMillan' comes with respect and power. From the distance, I could see the trees that would be over my head soon enough.
Trees bent together in a sort of arch, spring flowers blooming in the grass. Of course, a serene place for me to receive my glove. Some are getting theirs in hotels or, give me a moment to cringe, shopping malls.
That is besides my point, as I stand near a tree, feeling my father's eyes on me. I can almost hear my mother smile as they begin calling names.
"Andrew McMillan." The official says, her smile was warm as I walked up to her. She handed me a smooth black glove, which I effortlessly slipped on.
"You could say it fits like a glove." I grinned, earning a few chuckles from the adults.
"Repeat after me: Abra Cadabra." The official gave me a wink. Of course I knew these words, even if they were the cliche ones used by cheest old magicians back when the Gloves were not even created.
"Abra Cadabra." I said, and the glove tightened around my hand. Every shadow in my sights shook, the ones closest to me piling up on my shadow until it was pure darkness. The only thing I heard besides gasps and clapping was the word from my mother, "Shadows."

Notes

So BurningSun started this up, and after talking a bit with him, I picked it up.
