Old Friends

Chapter 3

I guess you could say I was your average teenage girl. I mean, I guess I lead a normal life for the past year. I turned 14 three days ago. My parents are really cool, as well as my step brother and sister. My brother's name is Christopher. But he goes by Chris. He is 17 years old and a senior i high school. I also have an older sister named Araceli. Araceli is a straight A+ student. Therefore becoming one of the most honorable students in the whole school. She is a junior in high school. 16 years of age. I've always been real close with her, and when I was having trouble with school, she helped me and I soon became one of the best students in all my classes. Chris helped me with PE 'cause I REALLY suck. But I soon got help from both Chris and my friend, Nadia. My brother and I are really close and we are always messing around with each other.
I honestly don't know much about my birth mother. My dad passed away when I was three years old. My Aunt Teresa took me in until I was 6, then she had to finish school and with nobody else to take me in, I went into a foster home. I went to countless foster homes and orphanages for seven years. I ran away from a few of them many times. I was always so scared and confused. But I tried to stay positive and make friends but that didn't always work. I kept running from the people, and the foster homes and very unusual creatures, sometimes. I would run until I was sore, but I would eventually get caught again. I did this for seven years, until my adoptive parents took me in when I was 13. I've always been content with my life ever since I have been adopted. Everyone in the Cortez Family has always been really nice, welcoming and inviting to me. It was one of the things that I really appreciated when I was adopted.
School was also a fun experience for me. I will be a sophomore in high school. But my junior year was pretty cool. All the kids were really friendly and I quickly had a few people to hang out with. The learning was kind of difficult but with Araceli's tutoring, I quickly caught on. Like I said before, Chris helped me with PE after school and my friend, Nadia, would give me lessons on sports during PE in the school day. Although I was completely terrible, I slowly began to improve and get so much better. Soon enough, I got an A- in PE! And I owe all my thanks to Chris and Nadia.
Anyways it takes one to know one. I'll tell you a little more about myself. Basically meaning my past. So when I was younger I would always see a bunch of weird things and by weird I mean alien-looking-people weird. Not the wait-I-just-had-it-where-did-it-go weird. See, I was lonely so I would talk to other kids. Our conversations were normal, I guess. That was untill I brought up my weird sights of the alien montster freaky things I kept seeing. No one understood me. That was then I would stop talking to people. I was mostly shy and anti-social. That was untill I met this boy.
I remember him. We were kinda close. When I first saw him he had a sparkle in his eye. I somehow knew he was gonna be different. Like he was gonna play an important role in the world. He told me his name was Leo, Leo Valdez. I noticed him before, but I never really talked to him, untill that day.
He came up to me telling me I looked lonely. In his arms, he brought a bunch of metal scraps, nails, a hammer and a buch more old junk that seemed useless. But boy, was I wrong. Leo was able to make a new invention with a bunch of useless junk. He and I would joke around, hang out, and talk About stuff we hadn't shared before. We soon became great friends. One of our weirdest similarities was our ability to see the monsters. We never liked seeing them, of course, but it made us different from all the rest. We would run from foster to foster, trying to get away from the monsters. And we always did.
I thought for a while that Leo and I were going to stick with each other wherever we went. I guess I thought wrong. Leo left one day without a word. There wasn't a note but he did leave his inventions. I kept one. And one only. The one he made on the day I met him.
It was a ball made of metal. It was the about the size of my hand and about 6 inches high. It could open and I was able to keep my valuables and money in here. And although he made without high machinery, it looked lively and it was embellished with small gems and the letter S for my name. I have kept it for years and have cherished it for as long as I have had it.
