I shook my head as we walked away, and looked over at Travis. " Damn, " I chuckled. We were taking our time in Making it back to the Hermes cabin. " I thought it would be easier than that. If I were her, I would have jumped at that opportunity, "
" I know, " Travis breathed the words out. " Aw well. We'll get her tomorrow. No troubles, " We weaved our way through the trees and back to the cabin. Before I climbed into my bunk, I pulled a wallet out of an undetermined kids ' pocket. I yawned as I leafed through it. After taking a couple drachmas, I dropped it back on top of the kid and fell into bed, not in any rush to actually sleep. I thought about Rachels response and relived my disappointment. Why wasn't she even remotely interested? She didn't even ask what we wanted her to do!
I sighed and closed my eyes. As I let the waters of sleep take me away, I thought of the prophecy we planned on having Rachel recite.
A fort in flames by the end of the night,
a daughter of the wise to die in the fight,
your own worst fears to rise from the ground,
many lives extinguished,
hardly making a sound.
I was wandering through a burning camp half-blood. Fellow campers were running around, screaming, some on fire, others not. A giant owl flew overhead, shadowing the entire camp. It was shot out of the air and it spiraled to the ground in the forest. In the middle of everything, I saw Rachel standing still and calm, eyes closed, breathing in the flames. When she opened her eyes, green mist poured out of them and flowed onto everything, engulfing the camp, the forest, the big house, the strawberry fields, everything. When the mist lifted, everything was barren. There were no more cabins, no more volleyball pits, no more long island sound, nothing. It was all gone, as if it had never even existed. In its place was a flat plane of grey rock, spanning as far as the eye could see. All that was left was Rachel, and myself. She turned to look at me, and I saw that she was crying. She fell to her knees, covering her face with her arms, and I heard her sobbing from the forty feet away that she was. I rushed over to her and wrapped my arms around her shoulders. She rested her head on my chest and let me hold her. I looked up from her, and in the distance, I saw Travis. He was just standing there, looking at Rachel and I. He wore a grim expression, looking more scarred than I had ever seen. He shook his head, ever so slightly. Even though he didn't speak it, I could hear it on the breeze, No.
I jolted awake. I looked around the cabin, finding that everything was normal. My heart was racing, but I still had my illegal stash of coke under the floorboard under my bed, I still had intact cabin walls that were not on fire. I breathed a sigh of relief.
I started thinking about the dream. Why had it scared me so much?
Was it the destruction of the camp?
The look on my brothers face?
Rachel?
I started thinking about Rachels role in the dream, an the more I did so, the more I thought, "yeah, that's it," Rachel really freaked me out. The way the mist poured out of her, how that same mist killed everything....
But I think that what freaked me out more was how Rachel started crying like that. She'd just always seemed like such a strong person. I'd never seen he cry before, yet the dream tears were so real, that after I woke up, I felt like I had.
