LIFE OF A DIFFERENT SWIMMER

THE RACE

"Take your marks, get set go!" the announcer screams and the beeper goes off. My arms come from the blocks and I push off with all my might. Straining my arms into a streamline position like I've done so any times before.

My hands hit the water, followed by my head and then the rest of my body. I go straight into streamline kicks, one, two, three.... I break the water and my arms both come over the water to start my first stroke. I do it again and again. On my 4th stroke my head comes up as my arms come around forcing a breath. The oxygen enters into my lungs in one massive gulp and my head goes down again. I repeat the movement again and again. I hit the wall at the end marking 50 metres. Both hands slamming down together. I see the judge standing, watching closely, looking for any signs to disqualify me. I turn quicker than ever. My legs push off the wall with so much speed I feel like a million dollars.

Now heading back the other way I see the next person a good 10 metres behind me. My strokes never slowing. My kick perfectly in sync with my arms. Working together to build the perfect stroke. I lift my head for one last breath at the 10 metre mark and see my coach shouting. Putting my head down, I put all my effort into my last strokes. My muscles ache but I forget about it. Then I stuff up. I breath. The water floods into my lungs and I prepare to drown into the one thing that makes me feel safe. Then I realise that I'm not drowning and I have more energy than before, my muscles no longer ache and I push forward with one last stroke. My hands slam the wall together.

I hold onto the diving blocks and notice that I'm breathing fine. Was it my imagination? Did I push myself to hard? Pulling my goggles onto my forehead I turn to the scoreboard to see my time. 1:01! I've done it! I'm going to the Olympics!
