The Life of Zander Hamilton

Chapter 5

For the next couple of days I trained Cody in the art of swordsmanship. It took him two days to get the hang of it, but when he did he was pretty good. He was still lacking when on offence but we had only been training couple days. One day I decided that the sword might not be his best weapon, so he should try archery plus training with me. I was watching him shooting with Chiron one day and he hit the center of the target every time.

“Well Cody,” I said when he had finished, “I think we found your calling. I’d be fine if you decide to give up on the sword.”

His eyes opened wide. “No, of course not, I still want to train with a sword. I will run out of arrows eventually.” He said with a big smile on his face.

I smiled back at him. “Well, then what are you standing there for? Go get your sword.” I said jokingly.

“Yes sir.” He joked back, throwing his hand up in a solute and ran back to cabin eleven to grab his sword.

A few days later was the chariot race and I would be racing for h with Leo driving and me defending. Cody was defending for the Hermes cabin. I guess that the Stolls had decided to let someone else give it a try.

“Cody,” I said before the race started, “Good luck, and don’t take it too hard when you lose to me.”

“You seem a little over confident, and you know what they say. ‘Pride comes before the fall.’” He said

“True, but you forget I have been doing this for a couple years.” I replied.

“Whatever, man. Good luck.” He said reach his hand out for a shake.

“Put that away man, we’re family now.” I said grabbing his thumb with my right hand and reaching around him with my left.

The race was about to start so I walked over to my chariot. It looked pretty cool. Hammers and anvils with sparks flying off of them, realistic metal flames burned around the bottom edge. To defend it, Leo and I came up with a couple new traps. One design we named trippers. They looked like bronze sticks but when I push the button on the end and dropped it out the back of our chariot, it would expand into a hurdle like device to trip the horse team behind us. Another one we named the M.A.S. It stands for Massive Amplified Screech. It emits a high pitched sound that messes with the other horses; it doesn’t bother our horses because they were made of celestial bronze.

I was waiting anxiously for the horn to sound so we could start. When the horn sounded, Leo wasted no time getting the horses going. We were in third place behind Percy and his Cyclops half-brother Tyson in first place, and Apollo in second. Demeter’s racers were behind me so I grabbed a tripper, pushed the button, and threw it behind me. The tripper expanded and knocked over the horse team and sent the chariot over them. When we pulled up on the right side of the Apollo team, their defender grabbed his sword and started attacking me; I easily blocked his attempts to throw me off balance. I pushed the button on the hilt of my sword mid swing, when my sword hit his some sap that had already been lit flew off the blade and landed in the drivers’ quiver, lighting every arrow in it. The driver freaked out and dropped the reigns; the horses turned in the wrong direction and put us in second place.

I looked behind me and saw Clarisse, the defender for the Ares team, throw four pouches of Greek fire at the team in front of her. This happened to be the Hermes team. I watched in awe as Cody drew four arrows and placed all of them on his bow, drew, and let loose. He had aimed each arrow perfectly, as they flew, they sliced each bag so that its’ contents fell into the Ares chariot. He pulled another arrow out of his quiver, and arrow of my own design, that would light on fire when it made impact. He aimed and fired the arrow at the Ares team. The arrow hit its mark it lit the entire chariot in green fire sending the chariot it and its’ team off the track.

When that was finished I turned my attention to the team in front of us, Percy. I picked up my M.A.S. and turned it on pointed. It worked like a charm. The horses pulling their chariot stopped in their tracks and started to freak and jump around. We quickly pulled passed them and won the race for Hephaestus. Cody and his brother pulled up behind me in second place.

“I told you man, I know what I’m doing when it comes to racing.” I said jumping out of my chariot.

“Yeah you were right; I’ll get you next time.” It was at this point I saw something flash above Cody’s head. I looked up and smiled.

“You might want to look above you.” I told him. He looked up to find a floating yellow bow and arrow spinning over his head.

When Chiron saw it he called “All hail Cody, son of Apollo.”
