The Life of Zander Hamilton

Chapter 9

I spent the next day in the forges building whatever I felt like. Not even leaving for a meal. I made three shields, four swords, twelve helmets, and two full suits of armor. And that was all before noon. Leo came in a couple hours later with lunch.

“Wow, someone’s been busy. You are probably, definitely the fastest builder I have ever seen.” He said setting a tray food next to my work station.

“I build when I’m bored. Actually, I could use your help with this one, you got a minute?” I asked showing the plan. It was the same one I had shown to Markus, who had been claimed as a son of Hephaestus a few hours earlier.

“This looks awesome. Sure, I’d love to help.” He said looking over the plans.

We worked for a couple hours trying to get the wiring and metal work right. There a few things that we couldn’t figure out. Leo had to get someone from the Athena cabin to do the math for us. When we finally got everything perfect we went out to the lake to test them. When we got there, we were met by Hilary walking back from the lake.

“Hey guys, what are you two up to?” she asked when we passed her.

I smiled, “Hopefully, Leo and I managed to calculate this right and now with the help of these boots and stabilizer gloves I will be able to fly. It’s basically what Ironman uses. Only difference is that I can’t shoot people with the gloves.”

They looked pretty cool, obviously made of bronze. There were two little rockets in the bottom of each boot and one in each glove. I put on the boots and checked to make sure they were on tight. I didn’t want one to fly off and end up kicking me in the face while I was in the air. I put on the gloves and experimentally gave a short blast of power by flicking my wrist. “Okay, let’s test these bad boys.” I said excitedly.

I walked to the beginning of the dock and began to sprint toward the end. I jumped when I reached the end and prayed the boots worked.I closed my eyes and brought my feet together. I felt a sudden push upward and opened my eyes. I was flying a good sixty feet above the water. I laughed, it worked. I leaned back and held my hands out in front of me and hovered there looking at my new invention, the rocket boots. I flew back to the dock and realized the flaw in my plan. How was I going to land? I screamed and flailed as the ground come up. I hit back first with an impressive thud and bounced three times before rolling to a stop. I laid there while Leo and Hilary ran to my side to check if I survived. I groaned as I sat up. “Ouch. Yep, that hurts, ow.” I looked around and smiled, “It worked!” I shouted throwing my hands up in victory and immediately wishing I hadn’t. Other than a couple bruises and a few sore spots I was fine.

“Worked is a loose term.” Leo said, “Let’s say ‘Functioned somewhat properly.’”

“The boots worked fine, it’s my technique that needs work. Maybe this is more like Ironman than I thought. I’ll try it again.” I said standing up. I tried it a couple more times, each met with failure to land properly. I even ended up hanging in a tree by my foot in one attempt. I finally managed to land by just hovering over ground and turning off power. I’ll admit I was a little embarrassed at the fact that it was that simple and I never thought to try it.

After that I decided to fly around camp and see how long they would last before I needed to refuel.I flew around for about twenty minutes. I landed next to the forges so I could see if I could find a better fuel source. I tried putting the same slow burning sap that was in my sword, it actually didn’t work at all and I spent half-an-hour trying to clean it out. After that I tried Greek-fire, one the most powerful burning engines in the demi-god world. That ended up exploding and ruining the rockets which I then had to replace. Then I tried a fuel I designed that would burn slowly but powerfully and built a stand that would keep the boot in place so I didn’t have to fly around camp all day, I could just leave it alone and sit back and wait. I sat there for a while but it was getting late so I made a little timer thing that would tell me what time it stopped burning.

I came back the next morning only to find it still burning and it kept burning until late that day. It was then I knew that I had the found the right fuel.
