Lost Memories (On Hold)

New Friends

Being a demigods ups are out-weighed by its downs, it sucks. If it were up to me I would be back home in Russia alone, but neit. I must be constantly trialed by stupid people, gods, monsters, don't even get me started on the bird.

I am getting ahead of myself, let me start over. It started in the year 2048. The world around me looked like something out of a sci fi movie. Cars that use advanced pulse technology to hover, holographic phones projected off bracelets, even battle ready robotic military. Don't worry, no AI tech. people are not so stupid to create Skynet or anything of the sort.

My name is Ivan Kaidonovsky. don't you Americans worry about pronouncing that, you'll probably get it wrong. You don't know me, but you will. My hair is short and jet black and my eyes are blue, like electric blue. I live in a Moscow, Russian ally way like a hobo. My mother abandoned me when I was four, and that was my only memory of her. I can remember very little about life before that. I can't remember if we ever had a pet, I can't remember where or what our house was like. Heck, I can't remember what my mom looked like.

They tried to put me in a adoption house but I wasn't what they called "Cute" as a child so I ran away. I've been on my own ever since. I would have gone to my dads but I never met him. From what I remember my mother telling me I didn't want to. she used words like loser and dead-beat but that could be just because he left her to take car of me by herself

I was going to the local, how you Americans say "flea market," trying to find something to eat. I mostly lived off old food I found in dumpsters behind restaurants. But today was special day for me, my birthday, so I went to find something that wasn't covered in mold.

At the market they had things from watches to sunglasses to phone covers. but I was looking for food witch was at the far end. I looked up and saw a white bird. Some people saw it and looked in awe, but t was nothing special to me. I had seen the same bird all over the city for years. Almost everywhere I go, it was somewhere nearby.

I kept walking towards the produce section. Along the way I saw a couple police officers that I had run into before. I was a known thief, but me when I tell I you I was very good at it. he saw me and started walking towards me. I quickly turned to walk the other direction but I was stopped when I literally walked into another one. she looked about her late thirties and was wearing way too much red lipstick.

Now this whole conversation was in Russian and since most of you probably don't have the pleasure of speaking Russian, I shall translate for you.

"Look what we have here. What are you up to kid?" She asked, she had an American accent, which I thought was kind of strange. she probably stopped me because I was wearing old tattered and ripped clothes with a very messy hairdo. Her name plate said Magaera.

"Officer... Magaera is it?" I asked, she nodded. "Are you new, because I knew pretty much all the police officers in the city? I have a big reputation here." I said.

Behind me, I heard one of the other officers speak. "Relax Rookie, he's nothing to worry about. Isn't that right, Ivan?" It was Officer Mahkno, the guy who usually caught me. he was a pretty big guy, but not in the muscly kind of way. He was rather fat and out of shape, but what he lacked in physical fitness he made up for in wits. the only reason he ever caught me was because found ways to corner me.

"Ah, Officer Mahkno, how are the wife and kids?" I asked , ignoring his question.

"I don't have kids or a wife." He replied

"Great, that's great, say hi for me. well it was nice talking to you but sadly I must be going." I said crouching under one of the venders' stands. I could hear them yelling at me to come back but they were met with my backside running away from them. After that, I lost sight of them. I assumed I lost them altogether. Which was good for me, nobody around to arrest me for stealing more food.

When I reached the food section, I stood back and took a big breath through the nose and immediately wished I hadn't, all I could smell was the over powering smell of rotten fish on a nearby stand. I walked away from that, some stands might be good but there are always those everyone stays clear of.

Luckily for me there were a couple of fruit stands, those are always easy pickings. when I was sure no one was watching me I picked up an apple and took a bite. Of course with my luck, it left a nasty sour taste in my mouth. I spit it out and the apple back, bite side down so no one would notice. I grabbed another apple and stuffed it into the inside pocket of my old beat up coat and did the same for a couple other fruits such as oranges and cherries.

Around the fourth bundle of grapes, the stand owner finally notices that I was there and started yelling at me. he was loud and angry, so much so that I didn't understand one word he said but I knew it wasn't very nice. I rand down the closest end of the market and down and ally way. I looked back to see if anybody was following me and saw Mahkno had managed to find ma and was casing after me with the newbie on his tail. Then again, given my rep for stealing food, it's not so surprising he knew where I'd be.

I ran into the street on the other side and turned left. There were some tourists walking away from me. I yelled, "Move it people!" so I wouldn't run into them. But of course, one of them didn't move in time and I ended up running into him knocking us both down. I said my apologies quickly and started running again. For a second I felt sorry for the guy, but when Mahkno ran into him as well all my sympathy drained away and was replaced by my laughter.

I took Mahkno's falling down as my chance to get away. I started sprinting as fast as I could to the next corner. There was no one in front of me so I took a chance to look back again and see if the women was still following me and saw no one. I turned back forward again but in my path was Magaera standing with handcuffs ready and an evil smile on her face. I turned around and tried running the other way, but that too was met with failure. Mahkno had finally caught up and was walking towards me.

Forward was blocked by Magaera, backwards was blocked by Mahkno, and left was blocked by buildings. Right was my only chance out, but I would be walking into traffic. I figured I would rather take my chances with traffic than go to a juvenile hall.

I ran into the street and starts dodging cars. I jumped over the hood of one car and stopped just in time to not be run over by another. I could hear Mahkno yelling orders over his radio to other officers. "He's headed for the bakery on 6th!" he said.

I made it to the other side of the street and ran right, away from where Mahkno said I was headed. I turned a corner and ran into yet another tourist on a skate board. He screamed something in English; I didn't know the language. I looked at the guys skate board and figured it would help me escape a lot faster, so I stole it. I jumped on the board and pushed on ahead. I could hear Mahkno's voice fading in the background.

I went for a while with no sign of Mahkno or Magaera anywhere. I turned into an ally but I realized that it was a dead end. at the end was a massive pile of garbage about five feet tall. Next to that, in an old moldy torn up recliner, was a kid about my age holding two canes across his legs.

As I Approached him, he looked at me as if had been expecting me. I looked behind me for a minute before I looked at him again. Now he was standing, supporting himself with the cane under each hand. He said something in English, but I just shook my head. He tried again. "Are you going to just stand there looking like an idiot or are you going to introduce yourself?"

I turned back again as I heard yelling. "Now is not a good time for me, maybe in a minute when I'm not being chased by police." I said. I ran to the pile and jumped in. I pulled bags on top of me to hide myself, and waited.

I heard something outside the pile and could make out Magaera's voice trying to give a description of me and asking if the guy with the canes had seen me. "Yes." He said, "I have." 'Great,' I thought to myself, 'I'm about to get arrested... again.' I thought of how long I would be in juvi when I heard them talking again. "I saw him running down the road, he took a left turn two lights down. He was running very fast, I can see why now. Tell me, what did he do that broke the law, if you don't mind me asking?"

"None of your business, scum." She growled. There was a pause before I heard the Clacking of wood on pavement, and then it stopped again.

"You can come out now, the coast is clear." He called. I waited a second. I wasn't sure if he was trying to trick me and Magaera was still standing there, or if he was really trying to help. I head an exasperated sigh and his canes again. For a moment, nothing happened, but then the bag covering my head was pulled away. "You owe me." he said, "I just saved you from jail time."

I looked around to find that the ally way was empty and Magaera had actually gone.

"Thanks, but I don't have anything to repay you with." I said.

"Yes you do. You have the food you stole in your jacket."

I looked at him, puzzled. "How did you know that I stole food.?"

"Well, my first clue was when you first came up. I could smell the fruit. Second was when the police came close behind you, so it was obvious that you had done something."

"Then why did you ask what I had done if you already knew that I stole food?"

"I didn't, you just told me. I said I knew you had done something, I didn't say exactly what. It was just some well worded questions that led me to the truth. Now, about my payment, I think I'll have some of those grapes."

"Oh, right, here." I said pulling out some purple grapes. "I'm Ivan, by the way. Ivan Kaidonovsky."

"Val Vargunin, nice to meet you."

"Val?" I said, "That's pretty cool, sounds tough."

"Yeah, you wouldn't say that if you knew it was short for Valley."

"Really, wow."

"Yeah, I know. But there are reasons why that name fits."

"Like what?"

"I'll tell you someday, but not today."

"Okay, but if you don't mind me asking, why would stick up for? I mean I'm a complete stranger, you don't know me at all."

"Well, we homeless got to stick together. Pluss, there's something special about you. We may not know what it is yet but if we stick together, we may find it."

I thought about what he said. It seemed like the guy was crazy. "Well, I got nothing better to do. Alright, guess I could stick round for a while., if you don't mind working with a known felon."

"I've got no problem with it if you don't. Welcome to my crazy adventure called life."

"Thanks." I said.. I heard a bird call nearby. I looked up and, sure enough, it was my winged friend sitting on a telephone pole n the other side of the street. Val saw me looking and looked at the bird as well.

"Whoa, that is a rare sight." he said.

Maybe to you, but it's nothing to me, I see that bird all the time. I'm starting to think it's stalking me. Maybe it's a new American spy robot." I said. He chuckled.

"Not likely, my friend. et me show you." He held his hand out and copied the bird call. the bird twitch it's head a couple times to get a better look at him. After a few seconds, the bird flew down from its' view point and flew down onto his arm. "See, a robot wouldn't have done that."

"How the heck did you do that? That's really impressive.."

"I've always had a way with animals, but I have never seen this before. This is a White Raven, a rare and beautiful creature. I've never seen a bird with this color pattern with the little flecks of color, kind of reminds me of fir." He said.

I looked closer at the bird and like he said, the tips of it's feathers were colored red, orange and gold in a way the made it looked like it was on fire. I looked back to the birds face; it seemed to be staring at me. It tilted it's head and squawked at me. What are you looking at? It seemed to say.

"I don't think it likes me." I said. the bird turned toward me, spread it's wings and squawked at me again. "I really don't think it likes me." I took a few steps back. The raven started to take off. I instinctively put my right arm out in front of me, covered my head with my left arm and closed my eyes. I heard the bird squawk a few more times as it flapped it's wings. I waited for the bird to attack me. But instead of feeling the birds talons dig into my skin, I felt tiny feet gripping my arm. I opened my eyes to find the bird sitting on my arm looking at me. What's your problem?"

"Maybe
she likes you more than you think" Val said with a smile.

"This is awesome. I've never been this close to an animal, let alone held one. If she doesn't leave, I might keep her."

"Well, a pet has to have a name, What will hers be?" He asked. I looked at her, thought for a second, and then answered.

"Flare."

Notes

Greetings readers.

Hope you enjoyed the first chapter of my new book, Lost Memories. I have been working on this for a long time, changing this and re-writing that for seventh time. so far, this is all I have written of the story, but there will definitely be more. I will be writing a majority of the story line but some parts were created by my cousin, Cody. If you haven't already, be sure to check out my other story, The Life of Zander Hamilton. If you enjoyed this rate it at a ten and push the subscribe button so you can see when I post the next chapter. (It will take some time, like a long time.) Bu until then, thank you
