The God of Toilet Paper Takes Sadie on a Date

Almost Perfect

Sadie grabbed Anubis's hand and led him through the portal. They walked through the gravestones and found a few that were propped up to form a platform of sorts. She pushed him down in to a sitting position on it and said, “Wait here.” She dashed off around the corner towards the exit. Anubis sat there and watched her figure until he couldn't see it anymore. Where was she going. Everything was going wrong and somehow some way he hadn't messed up enough that she left. How had he done that? How had he gotten so... lucky? There was no way any normal girl would have stuck around as long as she had. But then again, Sadie was no normal girl. No, she was special. He almost wanted to call her his Sadie, but that wouldn't be correct. She wasn't his. She wasn't anyone's. She was herself. And, woe be to he who thinks he can own her. Yes, she was her own person and that was one of the many things he admired her for.

He looked around the graveyard. He saw an elderly couple standing next to who he assumed were their children who were grieving for them, unaware of their presence. The dead also grieve for the living, but they hardly know it. He liked the dead. He almost never found solace with the living. Sadie was different. Sadie made him feel warm inside. It was a feeling he wasn't used to, and he liked it. He wanted to feel more of it.

He could hear jazz in the distance, a few streets over. He hoped Sadie didn't mind the jazz in the background, or the lack of a movie to watch. He hoped that she wasn't just throwing him a bone.

Sadie returned with a box of donuts and a couple of sodas. “Here, I got some snacks.” She handed him the box and sat down next to him. He handed her a donut while putting one to his lips. The sugar was too sweet for him but he pretended he enjoyed it for Sadie's sake. She chewed absently, taking in the scenery. Half way through her donut, she laid back and stared up at the first star that appeared in the night. “That's Venus.” he said, pointing. “The Evening Star, they call it.” Just because he lived deep within the Duat, didn't mean he didn't know astrology. Egyptians knew quite a lot about astrology, actually.

She laughed. “I know that, silly.” she said. He laid back with her and they looked at the stars. More and more came out almost instantly and he pointed out all the constellations he knew to her. Time was at a standstill and he didn't want it to move again. Not that Khonsu would ever grant him that.

He was about to put his arm around her somehow when they heard a loud roar. Mortals were looking around confused, and he and Sadie jumped up and began looking around. Around a couple of tall gravestones was what looked like a couple of small-ish sphinxes. They had the heads of women and were snarling while crouching down preparing to pounce. Anubis instinctively put himself between her and the sphinxes and pulled out a short dagger. “I got this.” he said. He began reciting an incantation that would confuse the two beasts but Sadie beat him to it. “Tas!” She yelled as a hieroglyph shined gold in the air. Bands of what looked like cloth shot out of the shadows to bind the two beasts together. Anubis ran over and stabbed the two beasts who then began to disappear.

“Well!” Sadie said while wiping her hands off. “That takes care of that!” Anubis started at her. The moonlight made her hair light up in different shades and her eyes shone brighter than they ever had before. Without hesitating for a single second, Anubis leaned over to grab her hand. He pulled her to him and gave her a long, deep kiss. Her lips were soft against his.

She pulled away and looked in to his eyes, smiling. “Yeah, this was a great date.” she said and she kissed him back.
