Sparks in the Flame

Percy II

Annabeth steadied Percy so he wouldn’t fall backwards off of the bench, for standing behind them, smiling warmly at the campers, was Percy’s father, Poseidon, god of the seas. Per usual, he was wearing weathered Birkenstock sandals, Bermuda khaki shorts, and a bright pink and green Hawaiian shirt. He was also sporting a deep tan that only the god of the seas could have. Poseidon’s beard was trimmed short and Percy could see locks of dark hair escaping his father’s cap, which read “Neptune’s Lucky Fishing Hat”, and was decorated with lures of all shapes and sizes.
As Poseidon opened his mouth to speak, a large clap of thunder shook the air, and a lightning bolt struck the ground next to his feet, singing the grass.
Standing before the campfire, with his hands spread out dramatically, was the first speaker, Zeus, King of the gods. His long dark hair and beard were neatly trimmed as usual, and Percy could see his muscles bulging through the dark blue pinstriped suit that he was wearing. His electric-blue eyes sparkled with a hidden smile, and because he was standing close, Percy could smell ozone in the air around him.
Percy turned to Annabeth and groaned. “I guess this means no capture the flag.”
“Ah, Zeus, you had to have the attention on you.” Poseidon sighed.
Zeus turned toward his brother and frowned. “Well, Poseidon. At least I dressed for the occasion.” He said, gesturing to his suit and then to Poseidon’s khakis.
Poseidon looked down at his clothing and shrugged his shoulders. “It’s not like we’re dining with the Kardashians; we did that last month.”
“Ah, yes. I remember that.” Zeus said, shuddering slightly. “There was so little clothing.”
Poseidon shrugged again. “Luckily, clothing is not within my domain.”
Percy looked over at Chiron, who was watching the exchange with rapt attention, as were the other demigods around the fire. Even Mr. D had come out from the Big House to watch the gods.
Zeus suddenly turned to Jason. “Jason, my very successful son! How have you been? Off destroying monsters for your father, have you? And Piper McLean! Look how beautiful you’ve gotten, my dear!” Zeus said, his blue eyes sparkling with a challenge. Jason put his arm around Piper and looked warily at his father.
Poseidon took the bait and put his large hand on Percy’s shoulder, startling him. “Perseus Jackson, my pride and joy! My, how handsome you’ve gotten! Now, how many quests have you completed, eleven is it? So many I don't even know anymore! And look at that girlfriend you’ve gotten yourself, she’s a beauty, and smart as well from what I’ve heard!” Percy’s father exclaimed.
Zeus glared at his brother, and grabbed Jason’s arm, pulling him off of the bench. Poseidon did the same with Percy, pulling him along until they were facing Jason and Zeus.
Zeus pushed Jason a little closer to Percy. “Come on, my boy, kill him!” The god cried. Jason blinked and then gulped, unsure of what to do.
Percy felt a light prod on his back. “Percy, teach this boy a lesson for thinking he’s stronger than a son of Poseidon!” His father said. The air crackled with electricity, and the ground rumbled beneath Percy’s feet.
Thankfully, Chiron didn’t allow the situation to go any further, trotting in between Percy and Jason and holding his hands out.
“Zeus, Poseidon. I’m sure you wouldn’t want either of your very successful sons to get hurt.” Chiron said. “Why don’t we talk about why you’re here?”
At this, both of the gods seemed to snap out of their competitive trances, visibly relaxing. The air immediately cleared, the ground stopped rumbling, and some of the campers let out audible sighs of relief. Percy slowly edged back to his seat, as did Jason.
“Ah, yes.” Zeus said, clapping his hands together. Thunder rolled in the distance. “I’m here to help this quest come along. Drumroll please!"
The thunder in the distance rumbled even louder and continued without pause, magnifying the sound to a deafening boom across the evening sky. Dark clouds swarmed over the entire camp, casting everyone in darkness. Percy felt Annabeth grab his hand and he squeezed back.
With a slash of Zeus's arm, lightning struck the campfire, opening up a swirling hole in the clouds and casting a spotlight of the moon's ghostly glow over a single boy in the crowd of campers. The rumbling came to an abrupt end, and a single lightning bolt crackled and flickered above the boy's head.
"Nathan Lehman," Zeus boomed in the dead silence. "I claim you as a son of Zeus, king of the gods."
The camp erupted into applause, people pointing at the sky in awe as the window in the clouds swirled away into faint wisps, revealing the starry night sky once again. Poseidon huffed.
"Ladies and gentlemen, let’s not forget that Poseidon, god of the sea, is also present," he said, cracking his knuckles. The crowd silenced, excited for the show, and Zeus rolled his eyes.
"My dearest brother Poseidon, I am the god of the sky. And air. Air is everywhere. The only water in this place is that itty bitty lake over there." He said, cocking his head in the direction of the lake.
Poseidon grinned. "That is not so, brother. This is summer, and summer means humidity. This is one of the few times when I have a little control over your domain as well." He winked at the and campers immersed in their conversation and spread out his arms. Percy felt a tingling sensation as the moisture in the warm night air was pulled toward the sea god.
As Poseidon pushed his hands back toward each other, a ball of water began to form in midair between them, and continued to grow until he had to hold his arms above his head to contain it. The ball swirled and spun, and with a swift gesture spread out into a thin blanket, hovering between the campers and the night sky. He moved his fingers in a spinning motion, and the blanket bent and fractured to cast pale, moonlit rainbows over everyone.
The campers broke out into applause again, and then watched raptly as the water began to collect once again and form a twisting ribbon around a girl in the crowd. The water wrapped itself around her body and gathered around her feet. Percy couldn’t see who it was within the water, and craned his neck to see better.
The movement and foam in the water formed an ever-changing pattern, and all of the campers watched with awe and envy as probably the most fashion-forward dress in the century appeared around the girl, refracting small rainbows and moonlight over the ground and nearby campers. The dress was made completely of water, but somehow wasn’t completely sheer, and didn’t stop flowing around her body. Pearls had formed a necklace on her neck and a delicate headband around her now loose, wavy hair.
Percy’s mouth parted as his eyes found the astonished face of the girl: Grace. A glowing green trident hovered over her head.
"Grace Everson, I claim you as my daughter," Poseidon declared, and this time the applause was deafening, with quite a few whistles thrown in. Percy was clapped on the back by more than one person, but was too astonished to see who.
Zeus frowned, pointing an accusing finger at his triumphant brother. "You watched Frozen again, didn't you?”
Poseidon shrugged. "That matter is not of concern right now. However, I believe it’s safe to say that I won this time, Zeus.”
Zeus started to argue, but Percy didn’t hear anything.
He had a sister.
