Sparks in the Flame

Grace II

“I believe we should contact Artemis if possible, to make sure she knows what’s going on. The Hunters are her jurisdiction, after all,” said Annabeth. After Corrina’s Iris message had been cut off, Percy and Grace had run to the Big House and informed Chiron and Mr. D of what had happened. The Head Counselors were promptly summoned and everyone was now squeezed into the rec room around the pool table. Grace was really only there because Percy didn’t want her to be in the cabin alone after what had happened.
“What did she say about Thalia again, Percy? Is she okay?” Jason asked. It was well past midnight, most of the campers- like Jason and his firetruck pants- had come wearing their pajamas.
Percy nodded. “Yeah, Jason, she’s alive as far as we know. She’ll be okay, she’s tough.” Jason pushed his glasses further up his nose and leaned into Piper, who was standing next to him.
Grace tried to stay out of everyone’s way as they were talking, and nobody really acknowledged her anyways, addressing Percy if they had questions.
A boy who’d introduced himself to Grace as Connor Stoll chimed in. “I say we send our experienced campers in to get the Hunters.” This received a groan from some of the others.
“I say that we’ve been on enough missions to last us a while.” Leo retorted.
Piper fingered the blue feather in her hair and puffed out her cheeks. “Well we need to do something. Those girls are in serious trouble, and as much as we think they can handle it themselves, they couldn’t, and that’s why Corrina called Percy in the first place.”
“Piper’s right, the only way to achieve victory is to fight for it!” Declared a heroic-looking girl with dark hair.
“Of course, Holly would say that; her mom is Nike! Come on guys, the Hunters can handle this.” Leo responded, crossing his arms.
“And what do you have against our mother?” Said a boy with similar features as Holly’s- Grace assumed he was her brother.
With his remark, everyone started talking at once, arguing about what to do. Grace shrunk into a corner and watched, afraid to intervene.
“Demigods, stop this madness at once!” Chiron yelled, stamping his hoofs deafeningly. The room silenced, the campers looking chastened. “I must consult Mr. D and my other contacts about this situation. I will decide what we do, and let you know when that is. Go back to your duties for now.”
The campers started filing out of the room, grumbling amongst themselves. Grace exhaled.
“Sorry, we don’t usually do that.” Hazel said, putting her hand on Grace’s shoulder. “Our discussions are usually more civil; this is just an… interesting situation.”
“Yeah, that was a sight.” Grace said, laughing. Hazel smiled warmly, her golden eyes sparkling.
Percy popped his head in the door and waved her over. “Are you coming? Let’s go, I’m tired.” He said. Grace waved to Hazel as they parted at the door, and joined Percy to walk back to their cabin. The night air was cool, but not to the point where it was cold. She breathed in, smelling remnants of the campfire in the air.
“So, Grace, what do you think we should do?” Percy asked.
Grace shrugged, although he probably couldn’t see it in the dark. “I really don’t know, this isn’t something I’ve done before.” She wondered who Chiron’s “other contacts” were, and what they’d decide to do. “What do you think is gonna happen, Percy?”
“Hm.” He started. “Knowing Chiron, he’ll probably consult the Oracle, and maybe get Mr. D to call Artemis up, but also knowing Chiron, he’ll send us instead.” Percy said, a hint of bitterness in his tone.
“I thought you were all ready and gung-ho to go on a quest.” Grace said.
“Well yeah, but that was your quest. This is a serious matter. A whole other thing entirely.” He said, only half joking.
Grace sighed, her brain was a little cloudy from the night’s activities. “I’m too tired to be mad at that comment.” She said, elbowing him lightly. He smiled wearily and elbowed back.
Once back in the cabin, Percy scrounged up some bedding and Annabeth’s old pajamas for Grace, who, with some help from Percy, had gotten off her water dress and climbed into the top bunk.
“Night, Aqua Man.” Grace said, answered by soft snoring from Percy’s bunk. She smiled into the dark, and sleep overtook her.
*
Dark. Only dark. A feeling now familiar to the girl. She had no idea how long she’d been in the darkness, only her brain seemed to be functioning, her body fuzzy, external senses overtaken by the dark. Her short, dark hair was crusted with blood, as were her clothes, whether it was hers or someone else’s, she didn’t know. What she did know was that she was in some sort of container, it loomed around her as if it was a ghost, present but not visible.
A voice pierced through the darkness, shocking her ears back into existence.
“Hello, Thalia, Hunter of Artemis. Fancy seeing you here.” The voice was soothing, yet hard undertones betrayed its façade. The girl picked her head up and stared defiantly into the pitch black in front of her. “Not talking, are we? Well, that’s why I took your other Hunters as well.” It said.
“My fellow Hunters will never give you what you want!” She yelled into the direction the voice seemed to be coming from.
A harsh, icy cackling came from the voice. “Oh, I know dearie. Do you know what else I know? I know where your little brother, Jason is, along with all of his demigod buddies.”
The girl fidgeted, she had everything to lose with this new information. However, she stayed silent. The voice grew louder, more impatient.
“I will have the flame, Thalia Grace! You know where it is and I must have it. It must join my dance!” The voice stopped for a fraction of a second, as if calming itself down. “I will do whatever it takes to get the flame Thalia, and I hope your brother forgives you for what I do to him, if he makes it out alive.” The cackling began again, louder this time.
The girl screamed as the cackling receded into the distance. “No!”
*
Grace’s eyes flew open and she sat up in her bunk, Thalia’s scream reverberating in her mind. The warm rays of sunshine in the room calmed Grace’s nerves. She took a shaky breath and leaned over the side of the bunk to wake Percy up. His upper half was hanging off the bed, and his mouth was wide open. Grace rapped her knuckles on the wood of her bedframe.
“Percy. Percy, wake up.” She said. He answered by snorting in his sleep and whispering something about Tartarus, whatever that was.
Grace tried again, louder this time. “Wake up, Percy!”
Percy woke up so quickly that he fell out of his bed. “Shit, Flame-O. What do you want?” He said, rubbing his cheek where he’d landed. Grace jumped down from her bunk and helped him up.
“What kind of nickname is that?” She started to laugh, then stopped. Flame. She’d heard that in her dream, the voice wanted it to join a dance or something. She’d heard it somewhere else, too. But where? “Percy, do you remember my prophecy at all?” She asked.
He scratched his head, frowning. “Uh, I think something about a dance and a fire.” He answered. “Why?”
Everything clicked. Grace took a step back and sat on Percy’s bed. “Oh my god, Percy. I know what my quest is.”
