Sparks in the Flame

Grace

Grace was standing on the edge of a cliff. She couldn’t see the bottom. The icy, biting wind whipped her hair around her head, the cold stinging her skin. It was pitch black. Something prodded her shoulder.
Do it child. The voice seemed to be coming from all directions, echoing off of every surface and coming back to her ears. She leaned down and picked something up. A glowing silver dagger. She bent down and picked up a long necklace with her other hand. A small figure was inside a foggy glass bottle at the end of the necklace, pounding on the glass with bleeding hands. She couldn’t tell who it was with the fog obscuring her vision.
The voice was then at her ear. It sounded smooth and calming, but persuasive. She made a resolution to do whatever it told her. Smash the bottle dear. It will only take a second. Then I will set your friends free. I promise. Grace whipped around, but there was nobody there. The strange voice laughed, a sound like golden honey. You can’t see me, as I’m all around you. Just do it. Something in the back of her mind told her not to do what this mysterious man said.
She turned, putting the bottle around her neck, raising the dagger to challenge the voice. The soothing laugh turned into vicious cackles as a figure materialized in front of her. A handsome teenage boy a little older than her was sneering, his shoulder length black hair whipping around his ghostly pale neck and face. His eyes were dark and endless, a pool of night. He was wearing a black suit that seemed to be moving on its own, as if it wasn’t made of anything. Oddly though, his cape was pure silver, lighting up the air around it, if only just by a little bit. He was holding a black sword that seemed to be sucking every bit of light made from the cape.
“Hello Grace Everson. Why aren’t you smashing the bottle?” His black eyes flashed with hurt and her hand inched towards the necklace, considering. She shook her head and held the dagger out.
“Who are you? What do you want?” She demanded, eyes boring into him.
“Who am I? Your worst nightmare.” In the middle of the sentence, his voice turned icy and he swooshed his cape, disappearing and surrounding her in darkness. You have defied me. Your family and friends won’t live to see the daylight! The darkness closed in. She fell.

Grace shot up, sending sand flying. She was sweating and her hands were clammy. She coughed up some sand before standing up. The air was cool and crisp, with fog hanging over everything like a curtain. A blue blanket lay over her and a grey sweatshirt lay beside her. She looked around for the person who had put them there, but found nothing. She wiped sand off her clothes and hair, grabbing the sweatshirt and shrugging it over her shoulders. It was a couple sizes too big, probably some guys’.
She jogged over to the woods and walked in, breathing the scent of pine needles and sap. The tree trunks ranged from dark brown to grey, their leaves a deep dark green. Sunshine filtered through the treetops, making splotches of light appear on the ground. Twigs and leaves snapped under her sneakers as she sauntered through the trees, twirling and humming to herself. A twig crunched behind her and she spun around. A startled-looking girl was peeking from behind a tree with wide eyes.
Grace dropped her defenses. “You can come out. I won’t hurt you.” She stepped closer, holding her hands out in surrender.
The girl stepped into the light and smiled weakly. She had pale skin and braided purple hair highlighted with white. She was wearing a green, Greek flowing dress, with flowery vines running up and down her arms and legs. She had a flower behind her ear and was holding a thick leather book with gold leaf trim under her arm. Grace held out her hand. “Hi, I’m Grace.” The girl took her hand, and they shook.
The girl spoke, a quiet voice, sounding almost like a child. “I haven’t seen you around here before. What is your lineage?” It took Grace a second to figure out what the girl was asking. “Oh, you mean my parent? I don’t know, not yet at least. I just got here yesterday. What about you?” The strange girl giggled at Grace’s response.
“I am not a demigod, young one, no. I am a forest nymph. My name is Aster.” She responded.
“Um, what’s a forest nymph?” Grace asked. She had heard the name before, but couldn’t quite recall where.
“Forest nymphs are maidens, like me, who are connected to the nature of where they live. There are water nymphs, who are also called naiads, mountain nymphs, forest nymphs like me, and tree nymphs, as well as many others. Do you see these little purple flowers on the forest floor?” Aster asked, gesturing to the ground, where small, purple flowers were sprinkled around. Grace nodded. “Those are aster flowers, my namesake, and the thing I am connected to. I am connected to a certain flower, and can’t travel too far from it, but I am trying to gather resources to make a protection spell.” Aster explained.
Grace looked around, not seeing anything the flower would need to be protected from. “Why do you need a protection spell?” She asked.
“The campers!” Aster responded, her hands dramatically flying to her mouth. “They traipse around these woods, crushing all of the beautiful flowers. Tomorrow is capture the flag, and I need to make sure my flower is protected! If my flower dies, so do I. But I must go, before one of those thieving maple tree nymphs steals all my ingredients.” Aster nodded at Grace and hurried away, but briefly turned around to yell, “Don’t step on the flowers!”
What an odd girl. Grace thought.
Suddenly, the breakfast bell sounded, and Grace started jogging towards the mess hall. She did not want to be late on her first day as an official camper.
