Sparks in the Flame

Percy II

Percy and Annabeth found Nathan sitting in the armory, shining a long, celestial bronze sword with the corner of his shirt. When he saw them come in, he stood, the sword clattering to the floor.
“Hey guys. I heard about Grace. Is she okay? I tried to go to the infirmary, but some guy named Will wouldn’t let me in.” Nathan asked. He looked tired, there were dark circles under his eyes and he was pale.
“Don’t worry Nathan, Grace will be fine. Will Solace is a good healer.” Annabeth responded. Nathan exhaled and picked the sword up from the ground, setting it on a table behind him. They were all silent for a minute until Annabeth elbowed Percy in the ribs.
“Ouch, Annabeth.” He hissed, looking down at her. She gave him one of her looks that meant he was being stupid and cocked her head towards Nathan. “Oh. Um, so Nathan, how do you like camp so far?” Percy asked. Annabeth smacked her forehead with the palm of her hand.
“Uh, it’s good I guess. I like the people in the Hermes cabin, but it’s a little crowded. Last night, I woke up to find another guy sleeping in my bunk. Oh, and I also found this sword here.” Nathan picked up the sword and handed it to Percy, who looked at it closely. It was about half as tall as Percy was, with strange symbols on the polished silver hilt, small arrows like the ones Percy had seen on recycling bins. There were also a few Greek words on the celestial bronze blade: άγγελος του αέρα. Percy held it up in front of his face, trying to decipher what the words could mean. He could understand Greek, but he was a bit rusty.
“Percy, let me see.” Annabeth said, taking the sword from him and studying it carefully. “It means, ‘Angel of Air. Ángelos tou aéra.’” She translated, handing it back to Nathan.
“Not a very intimidating name for a sword, is it.” Percy said. Annabeth elbowed him in the ribs again.
“It’s beautiful, Nathan. Very nice choice.” She said.
“Thank you. I don’t know why I like it, it just seems…cool.” Nathan said, turning it over in his hands. “But I know you two aren’t here just to look at my sword. So, what do you need?”
Percy grabbed two chairs and pulled them up to him and Annabeth. They both sat down. “Well Nathan, we have a little favor to ask of you…” Percy started. “So you know how Grace got a prophecy this morning, right?”
“Uh, yeah. How does that concern me?” Nathan asked with a raised eyebrow.
Annabeth answered him. “Well, it’s standard camp protocol to send more than one demigod, usually three, on a quest. For safety reasons. And Chiron asked us if we had any ideas of who to send with Grace when she goes on her quest that was prophesized. We nominated you and Reed, among others.”
Nathan’s mouth opened a little, then he smiled. “Sounds good to me.”
Percy was taken off guard. Sounds good? Every other demigod that Percy had sent off on a quest had been nervous, had had questions. Concerns. Reservations. Some had even left the camp they were so scared. But there had barely been anybody this calm. “Um, cool. So, we’ll talk to Rachel and Chiron and you three should be off by the end of the week if we choose you." Percy said, standing up. Annabeth stood up as well, but stepped over to where Nathan was sitting and put her hand on his shoulder.
“If you need anything, anything at all, come find me or Percy. We’ll be glad to help.” She said. Nathan nodded. “Okay then, catch ya later, Nathan.” Annabeth smiled and trotted over to where Percy was standing.
Percy looked over at Nathan. He was staring at the ground with the sword in his hands, tracing the inscription with his fingernails. Nathan caught Percy’s eye and smiled a bit, one side of his mouth rising higher than the other. Percy waved back, took Annabeth’s hand, and walked out of the armory. The sunlight outside was almost blinding, Percy squinted and held his hand in front of his face. When his eyes adjusted again, there was a person standing in front of him: Reed McCallic, the other newbie.
Reed was out of breath when he spoke, like he had been running. “You’re Percy and Annabeth, right?”
“Uh, yeah. Why?” Percy asked, putting an arm around Annabeth and pulling her closer.
Reed took a few breaths before speaking again. “Grace is awake.”
