Of Vines and Men - Calum's Side

II

Maybe I should start from when I went 'bad'. Yeah, I'm not gonna say I was actually bad, since I had good intentions. I mean, I didn't kill thousands of people, so I'm not bad. Right?

Anyway, I was offered to join Luke when I was thirteen. A guy with charmspeak and a need to belong, with a bitterness towards my mom for not being there. Naïve and impressionable, I was a great target for a sales pitch of epic proportions. As that point, I didn't need a large sales pitch, halfway into Luke's speech I was agreeing. I didn't know what I was really agreeing to, all Luke needed from me was occasional check ins, until I met Eve.

Eve was crazy, literally. She could make people go mad if she was pushed to the edge. Nobody knew what would happen if someone nudged her off the deep end- she was too good at keeping her temper. She was seriously but light-hearted, and had sharp glares that kept bullies at bay. Once, someone was particularly hard on her, pushing her too far and he had to be admitted to an asylum. The kid's eyes had gone white and he let out a scream, poor mortal.

She was my best friend, I could tell her pretty much everything. Her being so good, always on the side of the gods, almost bothered me. In the beginning, I didn't think it was right to tell her I was helping Luke. Back then, it was the early stages of the revolt. I became more important, and when Luke learned of my friendship with Eve, he wanted to use it to his advantage. A girl who could make anyone go crazy was a great weapon. I had ranted to him about how she spends so much time with Percy, Luke wanted me to wait on trying to convert Eve. It would be worth it, he would tell me, that it would work out in the end.

Then, a newcomer, Amira. She was girly and loved anything with flowers and skirts. She would fit right in with my cabin, but I was glad she didn't. With a slight green undertone to her skin and oak bark colored hair, she was beautiful. Her eyes were bright as those microscopic photos of chlorophyll. I only know that because she talked about that for an hour once, I had confused it with the color cyan.

"Calum, by Hera herself I swear, if you steal my jacket one more time I will punch you." Amira threatened, yanking her sweatshirt from my hand.
"You're always cold, Amira." I commented, and I actually saw her for what she was. Her hair was be frizzy, and I saw a slight sunburn on her cheeks. Yett the freckles on her nose and the way her eyes shined was intoxicating. I could stare at her four hours, seeing each intricate detail of her eyes and the way her nose turns upward just slightly, how her lips were just a bit on the round side, but when her eyes crinkled with a smile she radiated joy. It was infectious.

"The weather hates me. Gardening season is my favorite." She sighed, kicking the grass as we walked. We were taking a route around Camp, and I wasn't even looking at the scenery like she was.
"I don't like the winter either." I agreed, looking up at the clouds shrouding the sunlight.
"But, being with you is always fun." Amira says quietly, brushing her fingertips along a bush.

"It is."
