Blood on Roses

II

[Darn it! I translated the last chapter and post it?!?! *sigh* I'm learning as I go with this and google translate isn't helping anything. So I decided I'd finally start at the beginning of this manuscript... Geez Eliza you'd be the only one to mess up like that...]

Ambrosine of Athens the IIX month of the year and nearing the end of summer.

[btw this manuscript is apparently a few years before the First Persian War. It's a thing, I looked it up.]

The season is coming to a close, although I will say that there isn't much of seasons changing here in Athens. [i also looked this up apparently Athens is along the equator and not much changes climate wise: good for a winter vacation I guess.] But Father assures me that everything will be alright; my brother is of fighting age and he goes and trains for the army. Taking what heirlooms my Father has and what money Father can provide for him.

I'm not worried thinking, no not about my brother, Athens isn't like Sparta, war mongering city state. No, Athens is peaceful, just as the goddess Athena intended. So I'm not worried about him I'm worried about my arrangement. I'm nearing of marrying age and my Father has been trying to find me a husband. Which wont particularly hard at all. My Father is a retired Captain of the army with honor and money.

My my mother tells me that my looks will help but it's hard to see myself in the bronze mirror. I do have my Father's hair. But my Mother's eyes. [how did she get into the army?!?] Only thing that could probably end my arrangement is that my Mother is A Spartan. Yes. Spartan.

Father, when he was young and stupid, as he likes to say, saw Mother when he was escorting a dignitary to the Spartan council and stole my Mother.

[i'm reading this and this isn't like yeah the man stole her heart no, I think she's talking straight up kidnapping.]

My grandfather didn't want dishonor on his family so he got them married as soon as possible. I think it almost cost the alliance that we had with the Spartans because Grandfather is one of the leaders in the city.

[Geez when is this going to pick up?]

I help Mother with the chores around the house and make sure that I thank the gods and pray for protection as I walk out and run a few errands with a couple of servants.

I love the marketplace. So lively and the air is better than the one at the house. When we walk in I see beautiful patterns of cloth on a merchant's cart, and hope the next time Mother sends me for some I'll be able to get that one bolt that has beautiful colors.

The he dark skinned man with the cart full of beautiful silks noticed my interest in the bolts of cloth, and came up to me with a big smile on his face, "Can I interest you in something?" His accent is thick, and kinda funny sounding.

[i think the guy is from India. Cause the accents are funny, and they do have colorful clothing.]

"Oh no, sir. I can't today. It is beautiful." I reply.

"Yes. Beautiful fabric for a beautiful lady."

"I can't buy today sir."

"I will marke down the price for the beautiful woman today." He says with a smile trying for haggle with me but the man servant behind me walks up, "Sorry sir we are not in the market for cloth today."

"But the lady-"

"My lady says no." He says a bit more sternly, and whisks me away.

"I could've handled it on my own!" I tell him, rather angrily.
"He's like a dog, Mistress. Once he bites he'll never let go."
I huff, "I've never seen you around the house before."
"I'm the new hired help." He replies, "Now let's buy those figs your mother sent you for."

[geez... I'm bored.]
