Alexandra Orlova

Chapter 1: "Why?"

Chapter 1: “Why?”
“Why”, Alexandra thought to herself as she regained her senses,” Why am I hearing birds?” There were no birds in the Underworld, nor was there soft, warm ground under you, with grass. Alexandra slowly opened her eyes and saw tall trees with their system of branches and their beautiful, green leaves. The sunlight made the leaves glow. It’s been such a long time since Alexandra saw so much beauty in one place. One that didn’t involve bones, skeletons, ghosts, or anything associated with death in general. It was a relieving sight.
“It means I’m not dead”, Alexandra thought to herself, “otherwise I’d be in a courtroom facing three, old, nasty dead guys.”. She started trying to get herself up, she managed to… for a second.
The moment she got on her feet, her vision flashed white and black, and she fell to the ground. She grunted, turned around on her back, and sat up. She started checking her head, turning it around, up, down, left, and right. After stretching and cracking, her head and neck were ok. “Now, let’s check the arms.” Alexandra started feeling her arms to check if they were working properly. Surprisingly, yes, they were working just fine. She checked her waist, also working like it’s supposed to, again, surprisingly. “I should have done this at first.” she thought as she moved on to her legs. Her legs weren’t as quick as her other parts. The right leg did do all the movements that a leg should do, but Alexandra had trouble bending her knee, the left leg wasn’t in such a good state as her right leg. Her left leg’s knee also had trouble bending but below the knee, all the way to her foot, she couldn’t feel a thing.
“Shit!” cursed Alexandra to herself, she checked if there were any bones that were broken, but, she figured there wouldn’t be otherwise she’d be crying in pain by now. “So maybe my nerves haven’t woken up or something”, she thought. Alexandra started looking for something to support on, then she looked on her right and was surprised to find her sword, Shifter, 3 feet of silver mixed with stygian iron with a hilt that was shaped like a coiled dragon. She unsheathed Shifter and stared at it. A second later, Shifter started, well, ‘shifting’ into a cane that reached as high as her waist. Alexandra hoisted herself up with the help of her sword, now a smooth, black wooden cane with a silver top carved into the head of a dragon. She was so grateful that her weapon can change into anything, it’s so wonderful.
After adjusting her stance this way and that, Alexandra heard distant voices. Alarmed, Alexandra muttered a protect-me spell that supposedly warded off anything or anyone that wanted to harm you in anyway, and, because you can never be sure, shifted the Mist around her so if anyone came by she wouldn’t be seen. Usually, doing such simple incantations, would take very small amount of power and energy, but in the state that Alexandra was in, it made her stumble a bit from exhaustion. “It must have been such a fall…” thought Alexandra to herself as she steadied herself, “I need help. In this state, I wouldn’t be able to defend myself.”. Again, Alexandra heard distant voices. She decided that for her to analyze them, she would have to move on to a closer distance, and that’s what she did. She checked again from which direction the voices were coming from and decided to go that way. As she got closer, Alexandra had reached the end of the forest and found an asphalt road. “This means there are humans...”, thought Alexandra to herself, “Wherever there are humans, there are asphalt roads. It is known” Alexandra chuckled to herself for making a mini-joke. But what surprised Alexandra then was all the farmhouses that were on either side of the asphalt road, many with crops, fruits, or vegetables… Alexandra heard the distant voices and this time, since she was close, according to her ears, she can tell what type of voices they were. The voices were very high pitched to be monsters, unless they were empousai, but then she figured, if they were empousai she would be hearing a clang now and then plus, by now Alexandra would have been attacked at least three times. No, these voices also were, as her ex-teacher would say, too-sweet-and-hopeful voices which means that these voices belonged to humans. She also noticed that the voices were coming from behind a small hill that was well away from the main road. She decided to go where the voices were. As she half climbed half crawled up the hill, she saw a big wooden sign that was supported by two tall wooden columns. When Alexandra reached the top of the hill, she looked up to read the sign. Unlike other demigods, Alexandra was not dyslexic but either way the huge sign was written in Ancient Greek. “Ancient Greek?” she thought to herself “Why is a sign in America written in Ancient Greek? Especially in a rural place like thi...” Alexandra stopped her thought because, like any other Greek demigod, she can read and understand Ancient Greek, and so she read the big sign which said in big letters:
CAMP HALF BLOOD
