Chapter 4: Memories

Chapter 4: Memories

The next day, during breakfast, there was a lot of excitement amongst the campers. Word of the mysterious, fainted, (pretty) girl had spread throughout the camp and, by now, everyone was wondering who she was, “Especially some guys.” Remarked Cecil, son of Hermes, as he, Nico, and Lou Ellen stood in line to offer half their breakfast as offerings to the gods. “Well, can you blame them?” giggled Lou Ellen, “That girl was pretty, and the fact that she was, you know, ‘mysterious’ and literally came out of nowhere helped.”

Nico nodded in agreement. The moment he had woken up, he had started wondering who this girl was, how she got here, and so on. Now he realized how weird it seemed. Why was he so curious? Why was he concerned? Most probably, that girl is a lone demigod who got hurt and, of course, came to Camp Half-Blood because it was the closest safe haven.
But still, there was something. Nico felt it. He knew there was something, it’s just he couldn’t figure out what that something was.

Nico shook his head. “I’m overreacting.” As a child, in Italy, Nico was famous to the kids in his neighborhood because he had a strong, overactive imagination, and everyone wanted to play with him because he was good at making these imaginations seem like reality. He would usually end up being the leader of that small group of kids as they went off into an imaginary adventure, fighting imaginary monsters with imaginary weapons. Of course, the fact that, as a demigod, he could see through the Mist also helped.

But at times, his overactive imagination would get him in trouble. For example, once he got into trouble with his teacher, a fifty-year-old, mean, thin as a stick woman, because he had managed to convince kids that she was a monster in disguise who would, not only eat them, but suck their souls, too. That not only terrified the children, but some parents, too… Until, of course, they found out it was only Nico di Angelo, the kid with the overactive imagination.
“Wow, I really had an imagination” thought Nico, “Wait, why am I thinking of this now?” He didn’t like it when random memories surfaced in his mind. It made him jittery. “But why am I getting that memory now?”

Nico’s train of thought was interrupted because it was his turn to offer half his breakfast to the gods. Nico shook his head and offered his half-eaten calzone. [Oven-baked dough stuffed with either sweet stuff (chocolate, custard, jam) or salty stuff (egg, vegetables, meat)]. He prayed to his dad, Hades, God of the Underworld, for help and guidance, and then he headed out of the pavilion.

As Nico left the pavilion, he found himself walking all the way to the infirmary.
He didn’t know why.

Once he got there, there were Apollo kids rushing left and right, bringing canteens of nectar, small cakes of ambrosia, bandages, and other medicinal things. Even with the Romans’ help, before they left, there were still many wounded demigods due to the war, and not only Greek. There were some Roman demigods who were either too weak to make the journey to Camp Jupiter or they had decided to stay in Camp Half-Blood due to the environment, so the infirmary was packed with demigods, and the Apollo kids (Greeks and some Romans) were always busy.

Nico wasn’t sure if he could find Will amongst all this chaos, so he asked one of his siblings, a 13-year-old girl who apparently was rushing around with a box full of syringes and almost threw it at Nico because she got startled by him.
“Do you know where’s Will?” asked Nico. He kept a safe distance between him and that boxful of syringes. “Wait, wait.” Said the girl, “I need to get these syringes…” she looked back at Nico, “You said you were looking for Will?”
“Uh, yeah.”

“Oh, good. I was heading there. Come with me.” Not waiting for Nico to reply, the girl turned and started heading towards the back of the infirmary. Nico followed.

The girl made her way through draperies and her rushing siblings. Nico guessed she was used as an assistant because she wasn’t wearing what her other siblings were, some were wearing doctor’s coats, others were wearing surgeon outfits (green shirt with a matching green pants and white shoes), some were wearing a mix of the two, but this girl was wearing an orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirt, yellow shorts, and bright pink and yellow sneakers. Her blonde hair was tied in a ponytail but all in all, she was as casual as any normal person. She was kind of short for a 13-year-old girl.

As they made it at the back of the infirmary, there were a lot more draperies and less people scurrying about. “This is where we do all the major surgeries.” Nico got surprised when the girl talked. “Oh.” Was all Nico could say. “Did you hear of the mysterious girl, who we found unconscious?”
“Uh, yeah. I was there.”

“Well, anyway, we had to move her here under Chiron’s orders. Do you know why?” The girl turned to look at him. Nico made sure to take a step backward. She looked at him. “Maybe it’s something critical.” Replied Nico, “Maybe the girl was more injured or hurt than we knew or guessed.” The girl shook her head. “There is no critical injury or internal bleeding… And Will said that you stated that she wasn’t dying. So…” She kept looking at Nico as if she expected him to know the reason. “Look, um...”
“Serena.”
“Yeah, Serena. I have no idea why Chiron ordered you guys to take her to… um…”
“Surgery corner.”
“Uh-huh, and I just came here to find Will and…”
“To ask what’s the girl’s condition.”

Nico was going to say something to the contrary and state that he came here to see how Will was doing, but he realized that he indeed came to ask after the ‘mysterious’ girl. Nico didn’t know how to reply.
“You know what’s weird about that girl?” asked Serena
“Uh… what?” asked Nico
“When Alan, one of my half-brothers, checked her eyes, they were different colored.” In Serena’s eyes there was excitement. “Weird, huh?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“But want to know what’s even more weird about that girl?”
“What?” Nico was wondering why they had stopped and having this conversation.
“Her clothes.” Pause. Serena was looking at Nico expectantly.
“What about her clothes?” Nico asked.
“They are, like, all black and, apparently, under that, there was armor. Plus, to make it weirder, on the girl’s trench coat, on the back, there was a weird, big, white symbol. I’ve asked one of Athena’s kids to do some research.”

Now, Nico was listening to her intently. “And did they find anything?” he asked. Serena’s eyes became slightly sad, “No.” Then out of nowhere, Will appeared.

Serena got so startled that this time she did drop the boxful of syringes. Luckily, the box flew a bit too high and landed with a crash behind her. Some people had opened the draperies to look what was going on. “Serena! Be careful.” Exclaimed Will, then he sighed, “You get so easily scared. Go pick that box up, and if there are any syringes around, pick them up. If you need help, call Anna. She is very careful with such things.” Serena, flustered, nodded then went to pick up the box. Will turned to Nico. “Hi.” Seeing that Nico didn’t respond, Will continued, “Something up?”
“You didn’t come to breakfast.” Blurted Nico.
“Well, yeah, I’m busy. Besides, they bring breakfast here for us and the patients, but I don’t think you’re here to talk about potential malnutrition or bring me breakfast.” Will looked at Nico. Nico didn’t want to meet his eyes. He was right.
“Will, I’m sorry…”
“Sorry? What are you sorry for?”
“That I…”
“Dude, a girl comes to our camp literally out of nowhere, plus she had fainted. It’s a natural thing to come and worry about her, even if none of us know who she is, where she’s from, or any of her friends or relatives.” Will smiled reassuringly.
“Still, as your friend, I should have come wondering about you, or something.” Replied Nico.
“Man, I know you and people. I get it.” Before Nico could argue, Will put up a finger to his mouth, as if asking Nico to be silent. Then Will leaned in and, with a lowered voice, said “There are some healers and patients who are undergoing surgery. Best that we continue our conversation where we have Misty.”
“Misty?” asked Nico as he followed Will to a set of drapes that were in a corner.
“That’s what some kids have started calling her.”
“What kids?”
“The smaller ones. You know Lila, Henry, and the rest.”

Nico nodded. About one or two weeks ago, while the Romans were still in New York, there was this huge rescue party going on because a satyr had found not one or two demigods but five at an elementary school. So, with the help of the Romans who were still in town, they managed to bring all five of these demigods alive and unharmed.

All five demigods were under the age of 13, the youngest one was 6 years’ old, but out of all five, they managed to distinguish only one as Roman. So the other four are still undistinguished as whether they are Greek or Roman.

Reyna had told them that most probably Lupa, the sacred she-wolf who’d nursed Romulus and Remus, and is in charge of finding Roman demigods and train them to be proper Romans and take them to Camp Jupiter, would be able to distinguish if any of those four demigods were Roman.

Until then, it was up to Camp Half-Blood to take care of them, which wasn’t unfair. None of the kids were troublemakers and they got along pretty well with the older kids.
“Why did they call her Misty?” asked Nico
“Well, her being mysterious and coming out of thin air, inspired them.” Will smiled, “They are really nice kids, you should spend some time with them.”
“I’ve been busy.” Was Nico’s reply. “And besides, I’m afraid the kids will get scared of me. You know because I raise skeletons, zombies, and…”
Will groaned, “Excuses.”

They finally reached at the set of draperies. As it was fit for an infirmary, the drapes were clean and pure white, not a single stain on them. Will pulled aside one of them, and both boys entered inside. In the middle of the ‘room’ lay the girl on a makeshift bed (they couldn’t get hospital beds). Nico couldn’t help but lose his breath.

The girl’s state hadn’t changed at all from yesterday. Her skin was still as white as snow, her hair black as night, and she wore the same clothes minus her trench coat. She seemed she was sleeping peacefully. Just like yesterday, Nico had this need to go see if she really was there, which was weird because he knew she was, but it simply seemed as if she was otherworldly, which was also weird.

Will was the one who got him out of that trance. “Her state hasn’t changed one bit from yesterday. Even after the nectar and ambrosia we had given her. We have even given her unicorn draught that one of the Roman healers suggested. She seemed to get better, but her color hasn’t changed.”

Nico was still staring at her. He didn’t notice that there were other two people in there with them wearing surgeon outfits plus masks, until one of them talked, “What if she’s naturally this pale?” that was the guy who was on the right of the bed. “Yeah.” That was the girl who was on the left side of the bed, “It’s possible.”. “I don’t know you guys,” replied Will, “it’s impossible for someone to be this pale.”

“Except me?” said Nico, the other two guys were a bit startled but Will replied, “Your skin has this slight olive tint, and you’re not, like, that pale. You are pale enough to make me want to put you under the sun but this girl is, like, how should I put it? Bone white. Really, really pale. There’s, like, absolutely no other color on her face or, I bet, anywhere else on her. That’s not normal…” He looked at his comrades, “… or natural.”

The other two healers seemed slumped that their theory wasn’t right, but then the guy said, “OK, other than that, I don’t think you’ve introduced us to your friend over here.”
“I didn’t?” said Will.
“No, you didn’t” that was the girl.
“Oh okay, uhh… Take your masks off! We’re not going to do surgery and there is no volatile disease in the air.” Exclaimed Will, as he turned to Nico. “Nico, please meet two of my half-siblings and my fellow healers, Alan…” The guy on the right, waved, he had taken his mask off, revealing blue eyes and blonde hair, what made him seem different from the other Apollo kids was the fact that he was bulky and he had muscle, and he had a deep voice like one of those metal singers. “and here on the left, is Celine.” The girl on the left nodded, she was just like any of her siblings, blonde and blue eyes. She was tall and slim, and her voice was light and cheerful, and sunshiny.

“Now that we have done introductions…” Will turned to Nico, “… let’s tell you about the state of Misty.” Alan chuckled, “I really wonder why we even LET the kids call her that. I don’t think she’d be very happy.” “Why?” retorted Celine, “It’s a cute name.”. “If you were a cloud nymph or a venti, or something than yes.” Retorted back Alan.
Both half-siblings seemed they were going to argue until Will said, “It’s what the kids called her and that’s that.” Seeing that they were going to argue for that too, Will added, “Besides, I don’t want to call her ‘the girl’ this and ‘the girl’ that. Are we clear?” Both healers got it and calmed down.

Will turned, a bit flustered, toward Nico, who had been watching the whole scene silently. “Anyway, as I said, the girl’s state hasn’t changed at all. Maybe a little, but still, we cannot see it. So, we figured, maybe she’s in a coma or something. Now for how long she can be in a coma, we don’t…”
“She isn’t in a coma.” Said Nico, which not only surprised the three healers but also himself. Why did he say that? But he was sure she wasn’t in a coma, he was sensing it. He turned to look at the girl. Something was happening. He can feel her soul, but this time more strongly than yesterday.

The healers realizing that he was looking at the girl, turned to look at her too. Waiting. For what, they didn’t know. It was Celine who broke the silence, “Uhh… nothing’s happe…” She was stopped short because all of a sudden a hand had grabbed her arm. Celine shrieked as Alan and Will rushed. Nico simply stood there, frozen. He slowly started getting closer and closer to the bed, and he gasped.

There on the bed, where a girl that was said to be in a coma, had her different colored eyes open and looked up at the ceiling.
………………………………………………………………………………………..

After they had sorted out of the confusion and shocked. All four demigods sat around the bed, looking at the fifth demigod, who had sat up.

Celine and Alan were still shocked, and Celine didn’t want to approach. Will was checking Celine’s arm for bruises and calming her down. Nico was looking at the girl, who seemed rather tired. At some point, he had done eye contact with her and realized that she wasn’t as tired as she seemed, which sort of made Nico uneasy. They had called Chiron who’d immediately came all the way here with a little boy on his back. The little boy was Samson, one of the five kids who were rescued.

After Will checked that Celine had no bruises, he got up and asked, “So, um… we’re sorry that you had to wake up with all this noise, but you sort of scared us.” No response from the girl, she was looking at everyone around her, as if someone might attack her. Will, despite being nervous, continued, “Urm… I’m going to do a standard procedure to see if you’re OK, and all your senses are working just fin…”. “My senses are working just fine.” Everyone was surprised to hear the girl talking. After it was obvious she won’t continue, Nico said, “Then, who are you?”

The look the girl gave him could have meant many different things, but Nico didn’t know how to interpret them. Looking at her different colored eyes, he felt a bit dizzy and couldn’t help but admire how beautiful they were.

Her left eye was green, like a forest and her right eye was sky blue. The fact that she was pale, or white, really enhanced the intensity of the eyes. Nico couldn’t help but stare.
The girl looked at him for a minute more before she replied in her slightly accented voice,
“I am Alexandra.”
