Chapter 5: « Πού είναι η Αλεξάνδρα; »

Chapter 5:« Πού είναι η Αλεξάνδρα; »
As they left the house, Madeleine, Charlie, and Leon made their way towards the small, grey, old car that was their main transport.

If hot can be described into one city, it’d be Florida. This place was so damn hot, it made Leon wonder what he had done to deserve such a weather. Of course, being a son of Vulcan, he had to be used to the heat because the forges were hotter, but this day was pretty bad.

Leon didn’t like it, but he had to. Today he was given the wonderful job of telling parents that their child has died is a civil service, not a nice one, but necessary. Any parent, guardian, or anyone who knew the deceased, deserved to know they died, how, and, this one Leon hated the most, ask if they wanted their ashes. “Because that is what everyone wants,” thought Leon to himself, “Have strangers knock on their doors, tell them that their child died, and ask if they want their ashes.” He shook his head; he shouldn’t think like that. He was, after all, a sworn Soul Hunter, he couldn’t just say no to… whatever this whole thing was, it will be like dishonoring his comrade’s death. Leon sighed, why did the system have to be so old fashioned?

Madeleine, unfortunately, heard his sigh, and apparently, guessed what he was thinking about, “You should stop grumbling.” she said with her French accent. Madeleine Blanchet, daughter of Venus, was one of the special cases where a child of Aphrodite or Venus (it’s the same thing, anyway) actually knows how to use a weapon or two. She was especially skilled with a bow, thank the Gods, though, she didn’t have charmspeak. She was, of course, pretty. She had ginger hair, warm blue eyes, and freckles on her face, she was tall, lean, and ever so slightly, muscular. Plus, she had this uncanny ability to tell when there was something wrong with someone.

“I’ll grumble as much as I want.” Grumbled Leon, “Iz it like a built in thing for you?” asked Madeleine, who was looking at her notepad, checking off names, “You shouldn’t let this procedure get to your head.”
“How can I not?” retorted Leon.
“Because then you would be the one crying.” Said Charlie

Both Madeleine and Leon looked at him. Charlie Tremblay , son of Boread, was 8 years’ old, but he was as sharp as his older comrades. He turned his head up at Leon and looked him in the eyes, “If you started crying and, what’s the word?”
“Grieving.”
“Thank you, Madeleine. If you started crying, or any of us started crying and grieving, we will not be able to finish this and provide the support that the parents or guardians need.”
“And what kind of support is that?” asked Leon, he didn’t care if he sounded angry or was getting agitated, “This whole process is… is…”
“Sick” finished Madeleine, “But we do it for our friends and their families.” She was trying to keep calm. “This iz hard I know, but with Alexandra gone…”

Leon calmed down a bit. Oh Gods, Alex… How could he have forgotten? The leader of Order 2, their leader, had literally disappeared. They hadn’t managed to find her body or anything, and their augur couldn’t tell anything because the visions were ‘foggy’, the other Orders couldn’t do anything because they couldn’t ‘spare any expenses’, or ‘recruits’ to go ‘on a full-scale quest’ (really?) to find Alex. Especially Orders 1, 5, and 11.

Leon’s thoughts were stopped by an angry Charlie, “Alexandra isn’t dead!” he exclaimed. Alexandra’s disappearance has, most probably, hurt Charlie. She was his teacher, his friend, and, most importantly, his guardian. “What do you mean?” said Leon, he was hoping that Charlie had gotten information from venti or air nymphs. His hopes were squashed when Charlie said, “Because she isn’t! We didn’t find a body or anything!” Now Charlie was getting really angry and agitated, Leon can tell because the temperature started dropping.

Madeleine, who was silent this whole time, looked left and right as if expecting someone was watching them, then knelt next to Charlie so they can be face to face, and in a sweet, low, and serious voice said, “Charlie, I believe you.” That made Charlie calm down, “But there are people who don’t want Alexandra alive.”
“Why?” Leon was relieved when Charlie sounded like a cute, little 8-year-old again.
“Because it profits them.” Said Leon,
“And they’re afraid of her,” Added Madeleine. “and that iz also why everyone, and even some of our allies, are pretending as if she really is dead.”
“But secretly,” said Leon, “We are looking for her.”
“Secret missions?” asked Charlie, his eyes widening with curiosity, excitement, and, mostly, hope.
“Yes.” Madeleine’s voice was close to a whisper.
“Unreported? Unclassed?” asked Charlie, his voice also getting close to a whisper.
“Yes” said Leon, as he also knelt next to them, “So we are pretty much doing something a little…” he looked left and right, he swore he saw something move from the top of a roof, he turned his attention back to Charlie, “illegal.” He whispered. Madeleine nodded, “So it’s important that…”, “I stay silent and act sad.” Finished Charlie.

Both Madeleine and Leon smiled. Damn, this kid’s sharp. Maybe that’s why Alexandra chose him as an Early Recruit (Kids who join the Soul Hunters when they are under 10). The thought made Leon sad. They will find Alex. Wherever she was. Dead or alive.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

When they reached the car, Leon’s mobile phone rang. He got it out of his pocket. His phone wasn’t much. First, it was a flip phone. Second, it was cheap. Third, this was the only phone that the ULRYA approved of. (ULRYA: Underworld Laws and Rules for Young Adults).

When Leon flipped open his phone and checked who was calling, he answered,
“Γειά. Κανένα νέο;”
“Ναι.”

After he heard that answer, he was so excited he had to stop himself from trembling. He turned to Madeleine who was getting inside the car, and said, “I need to take this, can you give me a minute?” Nice, sweet, understanding Madeleine rolled her eyes, and said, “Hurry up.”

Then got in the car and ‘nicely’ slammed the door. Ok, new thing to add on the list of ‘Things I don’t like about Madeleine’, she slams car doors.
Leon walked down a few blocks but he remained just close enough so Madeleine and Charlie can see where he was.

“Μίλα.” (Due to the fact that most of you readers are English speakers, I will translate).
“Talk.” Said Leon.
“Alright, you’re far?” said his cousin, George (Γιώργος)
“Yes, I’m far. Now hurry up and don’t be so paranoid!”
“Look who’s talking. You’re the one who’s asking me to hurry up!”
“George, I…” Leon decided against arguing with his cousin. He continued. “Ok, ok, back to the main point. What is the news?”
“You’re looking for this girl Alex?”
“She’s Alexandra to you.” Said Leon, remembering how Alex reacted when strangers called her nickname.
“Whatever. I found this guy, who knows another guy, who knows this woman, who is married to a guy, and their son is the friend…”
“George!” Now Leon was getting angry, “Simply get to the point!”
“Jeez, coz. Relax. It’s not my fault, New York is a big city.”
“Could you get to the point?” Leon said getting agitated, he was wondering how long he was on the phone and if some monster was going to appear out of nowhere.
“Ah, yeah… I forgot. You demigods and phones. Sorry.” George did sound apologetic. Emphasis on sound. “Anyway, all these people led me to a guy who owns a farm and a plot of land way in the outskirts of New York City. Said he saw your girl going down the road. He got worried and thought she was lost or something, but by the time he reached her, she was gone.”
Leon was thinking, “Are you sure it’s the same girl?”
“You’re joking, right? Even if I have never met this girl, her features are very… um… distinguished, different, heck, I don’t know, even unique.”
“Ok. And it was on the outskirts of New York City?”
“Along Long Island Sound.”
“Ok, thanks.”
“Welcome, coz.” Said George, “Oh, coz. One more thing.”

Leon knew he didn’t have much time, but he asked, “What?”
“When you find this girl, can you set me up on a date with her?” Leon was so taken aback that he had to stop himself from breaking his phone, “Or with any other hot girl that you work with? As payment for my hard work.” Leon can sense that his cousin was trying not to laugh. He stood there for a second or two, and then he said:
“George, you still there?”
“Yeah.”
“Αϊντε γαμήσου, ρε μαλάκα!” And with that comment that would surely get him in trouble with his mother, he hung up the phone.

Leon walked back to the small, grey, old car that was their transportation, got in, and turned on the engine. Both Madeleine and Charlie were looking at him.
“Why are you doing the angry steam train face?” asked Charlie
“Yeah” laughed Madeleine “Are you going to blow steam and go ‘toot! Toot!’ ?”

Leon turned to look at both of them, grinning and giggling. He decided not to answer and turned, putting his hands on the steering wheel. Both demigods looked at him. “What?” he asked, seeing their faces going from happy to slightly worried, he then said, “Keep laughing at me all you want, but this guy over here…” he pointed to himself, “… knows where Alexandra is.”
“Where?” exclaimed Charlie and Madeleine at the same time. Leon grinned, and turned on the GPS. “Madeleine, would you be a dear and type in this nice GPS…” it was a nice GPS, top model. Leon loved it. “… New York City?”

Both Charlie and Madeleine realized where this was going and both stared at him. Leon couldn’t stop but let himself fill up with pride until, no surprise, Madeleine ruined it, “Your cousin George found that out, didn’t he?”

Leon’s grin disappeared and he turned to look at Madeleine, who was smiling like a fox (if foxes can smile), “You just had to.”
“But of course.” She replied, that smile not vanishing.
“Dude, just drive!” that was Charlie, he was so excited, he was jumping up and down on his seat. Leon turned to look at him. “Oh, you’re finally sitting on the backseat like a good little child.”

Charlie’s smile and excitement didn’t fade. He just sat back down and started doing a little boogie dance. Which was, Leon had to admit, kind of cute.
“Let’s go” Leon said as he started driving. “We’re coming for you Alex!” Him and Charlie whooped and yippied until it was, of course, ruined by Madeleine.
“Seriously? We’re going to drive from Florida to New York?”
“Yeah, why not?”
“Because it is an approximate 16-and-a-half-hour drive.”
“So?”
“Do we have enough gas?”
“Yes, we do… n’t” Leon had just looked at the gas meter, it was getting close to the big, white, mean letter E. “Um.. I don’t think you have any more gas money?”
Both Madeleine and Charlie looked at him, “We thought you had it.” Said Charlie.
“Yes.” Said Madeleine, she was starting to look worried. Leon knew what would happen if he said he actually didn’t have any money left, but… “I don’t have anymore.” He said in a little voice.
“WHAT?!” his comrades yelled.
“Uh… All I can say is… Alex is going to have to wait for a bit longer.” He said with a nervous smile.

Notes

P.S.: you don't have to read the notes

Okey doke, let's get down to business. This chapter focuses on three new characters:
Leon Papadimitrious, son of Vulcan,
Madeleine Blanchet, daughter of Venus, and
Charlie Trambley, son of Boread.
These three are Soul Hunters and Alexandra's comrades.
Now I haven't translated one or two line from Greek to English and the first one is:
"Γειά. Κανένα νέο;" = "Hi. Any news?"
"Ναι" = "Yes"

And the most exotic one: (Warning: Powerful language)
“Αϊντε γαμήσου, ρε μαλάκα!” = "Go fuck yourself, dick!"

Ah the nice things we say...

Another new thing I've introduced is ULRYA (Underworld Laws and Rules for Young Adults), just as the meaning states, these are a bunch of laws for demigods who are aged from 10-20 (yes, all the way there). Now although, they are SIMILAR to the normal laws in our world but they don't have a drinking prohibition. The only thing they have on drinking for underage adults is drinking under the limit. Never reach the limit. (Which is when you start to feel a little itty bitty tipsy). Another funny law is the curfew. The curfew is around 11:00 pm, but you can stay up late if you have a written order from your leader. About relationships and sex: no OFFICIAL laws about that.

Anyhoo, (I talk too much) hope you like this chapter. In the next chapter I hope we could get some action and the story would be concentrating on Alexandra again and maybe flip over to other characters.

Until then, stay cool people! B)

If you dont wanna read chapter 9 part 2 and 3, at least read the notes. It is mostly dialogue anyway.
