Alexandra Orlova

Chapter 7: Better to be feared than loved

As Celine stopped by the draperies, she took a deep breath. “You can do this Celine!” she thought to herself, “You will ask her ALL the questions this time.” took another deep breath. “Maybe her mood has improved, if Samson’s right.”

She then recalled when at breakfast Samson approached her and asked if she was ok (so sweet!), she explained to him that she had to ask the girl some questions and that it made her uneasy. Samson listened, and then said something surprising, “I think her mood might be better today. So don’t worry.” he patted her arm and went in for breakfast.

“Hopefully, you’re right.” Celine straightened her back, and went in, through the draperies. “So Al-...” Celine stopped. The girl, the girl who just yesterday was in bed and couldn’t move, was sitting upright on the bed, looking at Celine.

She had a mini-smile and a cat-like, sly look on her face. “Good morning, ms. Celine.” she said with her slightly accented voice. “Seems like a good day today.” she turned to look out the window, which was open and was letting the fresh air in. She turned back to Celine, her expression didn’t change, “You OK? You look a bit… um… bone white, doc.” The girl’s smile turned into a slightly evil mini-smile.
Which didn’t help Celine, who was standing there with her mouth open, looking at her. Then Celine did something rather unexpected. She fainted.

“ Oh dear.” said Alexandra, she got off the bed, and went toward Celine, “Who is lying on the cold hard ground.” Alexandra shook her head, “Now’s not the time to do pop references.” she looked at Celine’s unconscious body, “Ah well, let’s do something nice.” Alexandra went to work.
After carrying a teenage girl to the bed and covered her, Alexandra took a breath, “I didn’t know she was SO heavy!” she straightened her back, and cracked her neck, “Let’s go.” and she went through the draperies.

Will was so busy checking medical reports of the infirmary that he didn’t notice Misty walking passed him and saying “Good Morning.”
“Morning.” mumbled Will. “Now it seems that Jill’s doing progr-...” Will lifted his head, “WAIT!” he shouted, which made everyone stop. Everyone was staring at him, but Misty was gone. He turned and ran to the exit.

As Clarisse was training with some demigods, she didn’t notice the girl who’d appeared at the doorway and asked, “I’m sorry, which way to the Big House?”

Clarisse didn’t stop swinging her sword at her half- sibling, who for some apparent reason, had frozen and didn’t move to defend himself. “You go straight, past the lava wall.”, “Thank you” was the response.

Clarisse took a breath and went to help her half-brother. She scowled, “John, why didn’t you put your guard up?” she was getting slightly angry, “I mean, you’ve done this a thousand tim-...”. John interrupted her, “I’m s-sorry, but that girl…”
“Who CARES? You have a LOT of time to find yourself a girlfriend! Now get…”
“It’s not that, it’s.. It’s…”
“It’s WHAT?” Now Clarisse was mad. John sighed and answered:
“It was the girl we found yesterday, who had fainted, remember?”
Clarisse froze. Supposedly, that girl couldn’t move at all, now she was going around?
“You sure it was her?” Clarisse wished John hadn’t blushed,
“A girl with her looks and clothes…”
“OK.” Everyone had turned to look at Clarisse. Judging from their looks, they had also seen that girl. “EVERYONE!” Clarisse got their attention, “Get back to training! I.. uh… have an errand to do.”
Clarisse went for the exit.

Percy was busy at the stables, thanks to Mr. D.. Even though, personally, Percy had no problem being in the stables. He liked the pegasi in there, they were a rather fun company, but the issue was that Annabeth didn’t want to hug or kiss him because he smelled of horses, hay, and other stuff she’d care not to mention. Another thing was, Percy was given the chore (or, actually, punishment) of cleaning the stables because Mr. D. thought that what Percy was wearing was too revealing. OK, maybe waking up late and missing breakfast MAY have deserved a punishment but opening the door to Mr. D (what was HE doing knocking on the door?) without a shirt on, and being told that what he was wearing was too revealing, THAT apparently deserved an outright punishment.

Percy fumed as he remembered, “Thank the gods, I had jeans on.” Percy was so engrossed in scrubbing the floor of the stables (and, of course, remembering the reason of why he was there), that he didn’t notice the figure standing behind him, who asked, “Got punished huh?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Sucks?”

Percy straightened to catch his breath, “Yep”. He leaned the broom against a beam and turned to look at the speaker. “I’m sorry. I may stin-...wha…”

“Good Morning.” said the girl, with a black t-shirt, black jeans, and had one black boot and another that seemed made out of celestial bronze. Percy didn't know if that was the fashion these days. But he couldn't think about it because her different-colored eyes bore into him.
She was leaning against the entrance of the stables with her arms crossed. The sun shone right behind her which cast a shadow on her face. She had a sly look, “So, got punished by this Mr. D everyone seems to talk about?”

Percy couldn’t reply, because he was standing there looking at her, his mouth open, and was wondering how the girl, which everyone had said was weak and couldn’t move, was standing right in front of him and was striking a conversation.
“Uh...urm… urr…” was Percy’s only reply.
“I see.” the girl’s expression didn’t change, “Thank you. I was just heading there to talk to him. Is he nice?”
“Uh.. aa...what?” asked Percy.
“Is he nice?” Percy couldn’t answer, partly of shock and partly because he forgot who she was asking about.
“Alright, thank you. I’ll make sure I don’t anger him.” then she left.

Percy didn’t know if he should stand there or follow, until a minute later, Will and Clarisse appeared, both gasping and wheezing for air, as if they had run.
“Di… yo… see he..?” Will asked.
“What?”
“Did you see her?” asked Clarisse. Wow, how’d she recover so fast.
“Uh… see who?”
“Her!” exclaimed Will, who had also recovered.
“You mean the girl which you had said couldn’t move because she was paralyzed in one leg?”
“Yes!” Will, again, exclaimed.
“Yes, I saw her.”
“What did she ask?” asked Clarisse, who seemed rather angry. Percy didn’t know if it was at him or at the girl.
“She asked if… if…” Percy tried to recall, “She… she asked if Mr. D was nice.”

Both demigods seemed to stare at him as if checking if he was joking, “Seriously? Percy this isn’t a joking matter!” said Clarisse.
“I’m serious.” Percy said, now he realized how funny it had sounded.
Will straightened himself. He took a deep breath, “Well, at least, we know where she’s heading.”
“Where?” said Percy.
“At the Big House.” said Clarisse.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Once at the Big House, the three demigods were greeted by Chiron and were given a rather annoyed look by Mr. D.

Chiron was in centaur-mode and was wearing his arrow training shirt, and Mr. D was wearing a leopard shirt, leopard shorts, and leopard sandals. The only things that weren’t leopard print were his socks that were purple.

“Hel-..” Chiron was interrupted by Mr. D, who looked straight at Will and said, “You said she couldn’t move.”, “Yes but…”. Mr. D. didn’t wait for his response, “You’re also supposed to make sure your patients stay where they’re supposed to stay.” He turned to Clarisse, “You’re supposed to be training some kids, and you…” He turned towards Percy, “Especially you,” he had purple fire in his eyes, which usually happens when he’s angry, “You’re supposed to be cleaning the stables!”
“Uh… there was an emergency?” said Percy, he was not going down without a fight. “You do re-...”
“What emergency?”, the fire in Mr.D’s eyes didn’t tone down.
“Uh… the girl who we thought couldn’t move is…”, said Will
“... is moving around.” finished Clarisse, then, seeing Mr.D’s expression, quickly added, “ Mr.D, we still haven’t established if she’s dangerous or not, and…”
“She’s not dangerous.” said Mr.D., “She’s actually far more intelligent than any of you little…”
Chiron interrupted, he sounded as if he was a bit annoyed, “She is sitting on the couch feeding Seymour. Come in.”

Without waiting for their reply, Chiron went in the Big House and into the living room where, sitting on a brown leather couch, was the girl and she was throwing treats towards the stuffed leopard head (revived thanks to Mr.D.) who was hanging on top of the fireplace. She turned towards the newcomers.

She seemed to be enjoying herself. She smiled, her sly look hadn’t changed. She waved, “Good morning, everyone.” she turned towards Chiron, “I hope I haven’t caused any troubles,” Percy thought that sounded rather sarcastic. “... but I got rather sick of sitting in bed.” She got up and strolled towards Will so they were face to face. “Hope that’s not a problem… doc.”

Will Solace wasn’t one to be easily annoyed but this girl was something else. Her eyes, her sly look, her cocky stance, whatever it was, was annoying him. Then he noticed something, leaning against the couch, was slick black cane with a silver top. “I see that even though you’re on both feet,” his turn to smile, “... you still need your cane.”

She didn’t even flinch. “Well, my cane isn’t only for walking.” she walked to the couch and lifted her cane, “This cane is also my wonderful weapon.” Percy thought that the cane was one of those types that had a small sword inside. He didn’t expect the cane to change into a 3-foot, stygian iron sword.

“It’s called Shifter.” she looked at the blade lovingly, “It can change into any weapon, or pretty much anything that can harm anything or anyone.” The sword started changing back into a cane, which reached all the way to her waist. Clarisse wasn’t amused by the whole scene.
“Why did you-”
“Relieve you of your duties?”
Clarisse glared. “No,” Clarisse made it sound like a growl, “ you know what I mean.”
Alexandra frowned. She stood there and thought for a second or two, “To get your attention, I guess.”
“But why us?” said Percy. Even though he was rather glad he was pulled away from the stables, he didn’t like how this girl was acting.

She pointed towards Will, “You’re head of the Apollo cabin and you’re in charge of how the infirmary works, making you a rather popular doctor.” she pointed towards Clarisse, “You’re head of the Ares cabin, you’re also in charge of some training classes, making you a popular fighter and trainer.” She pointed at Percy, “You…” She had a very small, indistinguishable smile on her face, “You’re head of the Poseidon cabin, even though you’re pretty much the only one who inhabits it, you’re supposedly a great hero,” This was the first time anyone doubted that Percy was a hero. It really annoyed and slightly angered Percy. He was starting to like her less and less. Apparently she wasn’t finished, “ and you’re dating a rather popular Athena child, who is apparently, a veteran.” Her look went from sly to slightly evil, “Kind of a weird relationship, but oh well, love is love, right?.”

All eyes were on Percy. He was angry. Who does this girl think she is? Judging his relationship even though she’s been here for three days? Percy was having none of it. He didn’t realize what he was doing before it was too late.

Somehow, he’d uncapped Riptide and was charging at Alexandra, who dodged it. Next thing Percy knew, Riptide was impaled in the leather couch, and he had a sword at his throat.
“Stop!” exclaimed Will, he was angry.
“Yes, enough Peter Johnson. Look at what you did to the couch.”

Will ignored him, “What do you think you’re doing? Trying to kill him? I-” Clarisse went straight towards Alexandra, with her sword unsheathed. Alexandra didn’t change her stance nor flinch. She simply pressed her sword even more against Percy’s throat, “One. More. Step.” she said calmly. Clarisse stopped. “Hmph. Thought you didn’t like him.” she mumbled. She took her sword off of Percy’s throat and sheathed it. She looked at Percy, she had a rather plain expression.

“I hope you have a reason for that little scene, young lady.” said Chiron, he sounded slightly angry.
“I hope she does. Because of this, we have to get a new couch.”

Alexandra turned and looked at them. She didn’t smile. She looked at Clarisse, who was giving her a dirty look to die for. “You can sheath your weapon. I’m not killing your friend.” She walked passed her and went towards Chiron. Percy unfroze and took a breath.

It seemed silly to be so paralyzed and slightly scared of a girl with a blade at his throat, he’d been through worst things. But this was different. It felt like the girl would have actually killed him on the spot if she wanted to. He turned and took in a rather surprising scene.

The girl had knelt on one knee and had bowed her head in what seemed respect. “Forgive me sirs for that scene.” Will and Clarisse were glaring at her. Bad enough she was about to kill Percy, she was now playing the teacher’s pet.

Alexandra lifted her head and looked at Chiron. “I was helping these demigods establish how much of a danger I was.”. She then did something weird. She reached out her left hand and touched one of Chiron’s front knees.

Chiron looked down at Alexandra. His scowl didn’t lessen. Alexandra kept looking at Chiron. Mr.D’s eyebrows went slightly up, as if something had impressed him.

The three demigods didn’t know what the heck was going on. Why was the girl touching Chiron’s knee? Why did that supposedly impress Mr.D?

Chiron gritted his teeth. “Get up.” he said in a deadly calm voice. Alexandra got up. He looked at her, he bent down to be eye to eye to her, “ When you want to establish anything, make sure you’re not trying to kill anyone.” He straightened himself, looked at the three demigods, “There will be an emergency meeting before dinner. Tell all the counselors.” He looked at Alexandra, “Me and Mr.D. will talk with our…” Chiron paused, “... guest.” Then he turned and clomped out of the room, along with Mr.D and Alexandra.

Before leaving, Alexandra froze, “You know,” she turned to look at the three, bewildered demigods, “ You may not like me now,” she turned her different-colored eyes towards Percy, “, but in my defense, you entered straight into my trap.” Percy was glaring at her,
“You were getting personal.” mumbled Clarisse.

Her expression didn’t change, “So? If a monster became personal, would you charge without thinking?” seeing Clarisse’s expression, she added, “I guessed so.” She turned to leave, “Oh, by the way, you’re bleeding a bit.” she pointed towards her throat, “Right here.”. She turned and left.
