The boat sways gently in the air, like a huge sky-borne bassinet. The smell of hay wafts out over the two demigods lying just outside the stable doors. The boy, long-limbed and muscular, has his arms wrapped around the girl, who fits into his side like a puzzle piece.

“Do you think it’ll ever happen?” Annabeth’s voice is soft as it breaks through the silence.

Percy pulls her in closer. He knows exactly what she’s referring to because he had been afraid he’d said too much earlier. He kisses the top of her head, savoring the fact that he finally has her back.

“I don’t know, Annabeth,” he tells her honestly, his voice just above a whisper. “I don’t know.”

She sighs, nestling closer to him. “I hate this so much, Percy.”

“We all do,” he tells her gently. I love you, floods his mind, begging to be said, but he knows now isn’t the time. He tilts her face toward his and kisses her as tenderly as he can. “Can I make you a promise?” He whispers against her lips.

“Yes,” she murmurs, as though she’s afraid the wind will take it all away in a heartbeat.

Percy takes her hand into his as he lays his head back down. He intertwines their fingers, savoring the contact. “Whatever it takes, Annabeth Chase, I promise not to leave you again, unless you want me to.”

He pulls her hand to his mouth, running his lips over her knuckles. “And, when we make it out of this whole mess, I promise to give you the best life possible.”

She smiles, and in the dark he can tell that her face is burning red. “So optimistic, Seaweed Brain,” she teases. He can hear the happiness in her voice.

“Hey,” he laughs gently. “It’s what got me through the last eight months, and it’s going to get us through this war.”

She leans up and kisses him again. “Together.”

He rests his forehead on hers, their noses touching. “Together.”
