The Son Of Hermes: Storm on the horizon

Chapter 1: Last day of school

I woke up to the sound of my alarm beeping next to my bed. I groaned, rolling towards the clock. I stretched out with one arm, turning off my alarm. I sluggishly got up, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. I showered as quickly as i could before getting dressed. I hastily combed my hair in front of the mirror, untangling the dark chocolate coloured hair. Somewhat satisfied, I wolfed down my breakfast. As i was putting my bowl in the sink I heard my Mom calling from her room
'Come on Max! Theo's gonna be waiting for you. You don't want to be late on the last day of school.'
'Don't worry, we'll be fine', I replied, picking up my bag and pocketing my keys. Just as I reached the front door my mom said mock sternly,
'You didn't think you'd leave without a hug did you?'. I smiled before hugging her.
'Mom, i've got to go', I said smiling. She smiled back but there was a hint of worry in her eyes. I tried to think nothing of it and ran downstairs to the entrance to my building. As I swung the door open, I saw my best friend looking directly at me with his cheerful grin.
'Ready for our last day of school?' he asked cheerfully. Theo was my best friend since we were 10 and he hadn't changed much since we were that age. He had spiky jet-black hair, pale grey eyes and a cheerful nature. He was already fourteen and I still had the best part of a month until my birthday, so he stood a good two inches taller than me. He was quite often smiling without any given reason. ' Dude, are you okay?' he asked as i hadn't answered.
'Sure', I said, smiling weakly, 'let's go'

I sat in my math class, tapping my pen against the desk. My ADHD made me feel like i was stuck in time, and that I had been there forever. I looked at the clock and sighed. Only five minutes had passed. Just while my maths teacher had started droning about angles and lines when there was a loud knock at the door. All eyes in the class locked in the figure walking into the class. It was a seemingly ordinary looking guy dressed in a suit, looking slightly out of place. At first glance he looked around forty, with a haggard face and straggly brown hair. I shot a glance at Theo, raising my eyebrows as if to say 'what is going on?' He looked back at me blankly and shrugged. I looked back, studying the new arrival. He seemed normal but something felt off about him. As he quietly spoke to my teacher, whose name had escaped me, he glanced back at me and our eyes met. Had i met him? I didn't think so. I didn't know him but he seemed to know who i was. At this thought, i was surprised because I was nothing like a standout student. Most of the time I sat in class not doing anything. After they had stopped speaking, my teacher turned back at the class.
'Ok class' he said, 'This is mr Baxter and he's here to assess our school and he is part of the government initiative to find different ways for students to learn.' He said this to my class as if it were important but as i looked around, no one responded. Mr. Baxter took a seat at the side of the room and my maths teacher continued droning on. I sighed wearily waiting for the class to end.

After what had been another boring morning at Oak field High, I walked into the cafeteria with Theo. We were talking about our English teacher, laughing at the way she recited Shakespeare. As we burst into a fit of laughter. We immediately stopped when we saw Mr. Baxter standing in front of us.
'Hi' he said dryly, 'Could I speak to you guys?' Me and Theo looked at each other.
'Sure', said Theo, as we began to follow behind Mr. Baxter. As we turned the corner, I felt a tugging in my gut. My mind was screaming at me to get out of there. Mr. Baxter turned to face us, my mind started racing. I noticed small details. Theo's hands twitching. Water dripping on to the floor. Footsteps fading away. A glint of excitement in Mr. Baxter's eyes. 'So, what do you want to talk about?' asked Theo. Mr. Baxter smiled maliciously.
'Oh Theseus Walker, i'm not here to talk, i'm here to kill,' He snarled, licking his lips.
'What?' I asked, thinking this was some kind of sick joke. Before I could say more, Mr Baxter started changing form. His face elongated into a snout and his teeth turned into razor sharp teeth. His suit ripped as he swelled to an eight foot tall werewolf, not too different to what Max thought a werewolf would look like. His muscly body was covered in glossy brown fur. His hands turned into claws. He growled, looking at us hungrily. 'My master will thank me greatly for your death.' he said. I quickly snapped out of my daze and grabbed Theo's collar, turning on my heel and running towards the closest fire exit. I heard Mr. Baxter, who was now a werewolf, starting after us. I lowered my head and ran at full speed, trying to pull away from the werewolf. I looked back to see Mr. Baxter getting closer and closer to Theo, who had fallen slightly behind. just when I thought we were dead, I saw the door open ahead of us and a girl my age stepped towards us. She had a recurve bow in her hand, but it looked like it was gleaming bronze. She wore ripped jeans and had an orange t-shirt on. She quickly nocked an arrow. I slowed down and grabbed Theo, pulling him with me. I ducked instinctively as a bronze arrow sailed over my head. I looked back to see the monster behind us stumble as the arrow was embedded in its chest. I looked up and realised we were at the exit. The three of us burst out the door and ran out of the school building. We were in the football field with no one around us.

'Can you explain exactly what's going on?' I asked, out of breath. Theo was bent over, panting. I looked at her with wide eyes. She looked my age but she had a look in her eyes that seemed kind of older, as if she had seen a lot. She was maybe an inch shorter than me, athletic build piercing blue eyes and her hair looked like a waterfall of caramel in the sun. ' No time' she said. I looked towards the door to see the monster burst through the door, pulverising the bricks. He stared at us, a string of saliva hanging from his mouth
'Three demigods to feed on' he barked. The girl next to me pulled another arrow from her quiver. She aimed quickly and let it fly. I watched it sail through the air as the animal swatted it away. Me and Theo watched in horror as she ran forward, brandishing a bronze dagger. I stepped closer as I saw the werewolf leap towards her. I edged closer as she ducked under the leaping beast and slashed across its side. It instantly turned back and sent her flying with a savage backhand. I heard her hit the ground with a thump. Her weapons were strewn around on the floor. As I realised the trouble she was in, I threw my backpack at the monster, truly in disbelief in what I was doing. While the werewolf stared at me confused, I ran at him, scooping up the knife and jeering,
'come on you foul-breathed bog' I goaded and he pounced towards me. I rolled underneath him, turning back and running to him. I caught his foul stench as i got closer and closer. I raised the knife and plunged it into the werewolf's back. I expected it to kill me but it dissolved into dust. I looked to the others in horror and saw Theo help the girl up, gathering her arrows. I jogged towards them, returning the knife to its owner. She smiled at me.
'Thanks, that was brave of you' she said as we walked out of the school.
'Don't mention it' I replied, trying to sound casual about singlehandedly killing a werewolf. Theo looked at me , looking totally lost.
'Dude, you killed a werewolf' He stuttered, looking at me as if i was on fire. He turned to the girl,
'I'm sorry, your name is?' He asked, still in shock. She looked back at us,
'Daisy, and you guys?' She asked. We told her our names and we stopped on the sidewalk. Daisy pulled open a door and we climbed in. In the driver's seat was a buy who looked around sixteen, blonde hair and hazel eyes,
'Hi guys, I'm Alex' I nodded towards him.
'Where are we going?' Theo asked. Daisy looked out the window and said
'Camp Half-Blood'
