The Hunter

Chaos and Kids

“Percy Jackson, will you join the hunt?”
Percy was unsure of how to answer. Was the Goddess joking? As far as he knew, no males had ever been in the hunt. He would be first, special, unique.

But is that what he wanted? Sure, he would like to be really noticed again, but Annabeth was way too important to him, and he wouldn’t give her up for anything. Yet he knew that he would need to accept this in order to bring her back. What should he do?
“I need some time to think about it, Lady Artemis. I’m very honored, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not sure if my place is as a member of the hunt.”

The shadows seemed to thicken. Time froze, as did the temperature. Percy started, and looked around in fear. But not just fear. He felt something else… almost longing. Longing for the source of this power to be revealed. His attention was taken by one shadow in particular: the shadow of an old dead oak tree.

It spoke.

“Perseus Jackson… I think I have chosen well.”
Percy recognized the voice, but wasn’t sure he believed it. It sounded like Nyx, but also like Kronos and Tartarus. He blanched.
“At ease Jackson, I will do you no harm…”
There it was again. Percy wondered if maybe he was going crazy. Or maybe dead.
“I am Chaos, the creator of all…”
At this point Percy knew he was losing his mind.
“I wish to pass on from this universe… be able to start again… fresh…”
Percy wondered what kind of drugs were on the arrow that Artemis must have shot him with.
“I wish for you to be my heir… it will be the greatest blessing anyone has ever had…”
Percy seriously wondered what he was on.
“Do you accept this… and release me?”
“I-I-I do. Lord Chaos. If it is you… I release you from this existence. I do not know what to say… you heir… I could overthrow the Olympians with the force of my thoughts.” Percy said, in awe.
He figured that it didn’t matter what he said while he was high: He was high. This was all a dream.
“Take my powers… take your weapons… and bring her back…” Chaos’ voice drifted off in a serpent-like hiss. Time started again.
“Well Percy, the choice is yours. I will help you bring back Annabeth no matter what you chose.”
Artemis was saying. But Percy barely heard. He realized what had just happened had really happened. He looked at Artemis, and she looked back at him strangely.
“Percy, did you just have a vision?” She asked carefully. “I feel an incredible amount of power radiating from you.”
“What happened Percy?” Thalia asked.
“I-I-I think I just became the most powerful being. Ever.” Percy said calmly.
“What?!” Artemis shouted.
Percy recounted his wild vision. How Chaos himself had appeared.
“This is… I’m not sure what this is…” Artemis said when she was done.
“Me neither.” Percy said. He felt stronger, and taller as well. He raised his hand, pointed it at the dead tree, and willed for the tree to find water within the soil. He ordered it to grow leaves, and to become the life source for a Dryad.

To his surprise, the tree shifted. It grew leaves, new branches, and a baby Dryad popped out. She looked at him in shock, then looked at Artemis.
“Mommy?” She asked.
Artemis looked surprised, but pleased,
“Yes child. I am your mother. Would you like to be with me?” Artemis asked, with care in her voice. Percy realized he was that powerful. He had just made the biggest maiden goddess ever accept a newborn child as her own. He was shocked. He looked down. He was wearing a torn up camp shirt and dirty jeans. He willed his clothes to turn into something slightly more badass.

They obliged. His clothes changed to a black T-shirt, a cool looking overcoat, and some black jeans. A sword appeared on his back. Not Riptide, that was in his pocket. Another sword. He brought it out, and saw it was made from Bronze and Stygian Iron, with a leather wrapped hilt. He swung it at a thick log, and the sword sliced through it like it was made of soft cheese. He willed the sword to become an axe. It did, with a nice silver handle, and a double sided blade.

He swung at the log again, and this time the log exploded, sending pieces of wood everywhere. One piece angled at his heart flew at him, but shattered against his skin. He thought maybe he could fly. That would be cool. He tried to rise up in the air. It worked. He flew up above the treetops, and, for the first time ever, wished he had a bow. A bow appeared slung over his shoulder. He grabbed it, and willed an arrow to be in it. An arrow shimmered and appeared. He drew the bowstring back, knowing he wouldn’t miss this shot. He fired, and watched like a falcon as the arrow flew into it’s target: an old helmet, about 300 yards away. He was surprised he could see that well, and wanted a closer look. He thought about his target on the way there, and suddenly felt like he was shadow traveling. He opened his eyes, and saw the helmet lying between his legs, and his arrow through its’ forehead.

He laughed to himself. He was a God. He knew that much now. He could get Annabeth back himself. He shadow travelled back to the clearing where Artemis and Thalia were meeting Artemis’ new child. He looked at Artemis holding the baby Dryad, and knew that he could do anything. What should he do first?

He decided to have some fun.
