Frazel

“Excuse me, is this seat taken?” Around the study hall classroom, there were plenty of empty desks, but Frank had decided he wouldn’t be the new kid who sat alone in every class. And for some odd reason, he was drawn to the dark skinned girl with curly hair.
“Not yet,” the girl politely smiled back at him, and Frank sat down.
The bell wouldn’t ring for nearly five minutes, but he had left lunch early to find the classroom. “Frank Zhang,” he introduced himself to the girl, extending his hand for a shake.
“Hazel Levesque,” she gripped his hand firmly and shook three times. Then she pushed some of her shoulder-length curls behind her ear and took out her cellphone.
Frank bit his bottom lip and turned to the front of the classroom, unsure of what to do. The teacher wasn’t even there yet.
This was the third time during Frank’s sophomore year that he had to be the new kid. His mom was in the military, so the two of them and his grandmother frequently moved from city to city. At his past school, everyone had been uptight and strict, refusing to acknowledge him. Maybe at Goode, he could finally make some friends.
The bell rang, signaling that the passing period had begun. Students began to stream in, chatting to one another about tests and parties. Frank sat quietly, embarrassed that he wasn’t a part of any conversation. Hazel stayed in the same seat luckily, still on her phone. The teacher, clearly a gym coach, entered only after the final bell rang. He was only about five feet tall, wore a whistle around his neck and sported nylon sweatpants.
“I’m gonna take attendance,” he said in a gruff voice, not what you would expect from a small man. “We have a new kid, Frank Zhing?”
Frank dubiously raised his hand. “Um, it’s Zhang,” he corrected the teacher.
“Alright, well I’m Coach Hedge.” He nodded his head, and went back to marking down names. “We’re all just gonna go work in the halls, since there’s not enough desks in here.” Frank glanced around, realizing some kids were leaning against the wall.
Everyone stood up and gathered their bags. Frank followed and they all filed out into the brightly lit hallway. On one side of the hall stood rows of lockers, but the opposite side was filled with large windows that faced the forest preserve next to the school.
Frank sat up against the window, about three feet away from Hazel, who was still on her phone. He took out his welcome packet from the school and began to study the map. They were on the south side of the school, close to the theater.
A movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention, and Frank looked over at Hazel. She was standing up, taking pictures of something in the trees through the window. There were birds flitting through the trees, black birds.
Frank could see the wonder in her eyes as the faint chirping made its way through the glass window. Hazel was entranced, and Frank had the slightest suspicion that she wanted to be out there, flying with them.

Notes

Sorry I haven't updated all week, but I had the stomach flu and I have a ton of make up work I still have to do for the days I missed school. Also there were additional auditions for my school musical and I missed those too, but I still got a dancer part :)
It was really hard to pick a couple from a musical where both were shy and sweet like Frank and Hazel, but I found one(it was the musical our high school did last year, Sweeney Todd)
Anyways, enjoy!
