Apologies

Percy finished up his food and watched Hazel and Frank walk away. Then, he watched Nico and Will walk away. Then he watched Piper and Jason try to walk away with Leo and Calypso, but Percy knew he had to talk to them.
“Uh, actually, Leo? Calypso? Can I …. Can I talk with you? In private?” Leo frowned a bit, and Calypso turned red, but they agreed. Percy led them to the edge of the clearing, and Annabeth followed.
“I just wanted to apologize before it got… you know, too weird to talk about.” Annabeth stood beside Percy and smiled at him, then grabbed his hand and squeezed. Percy appreciated it, but he really didn’t want pity.
Calypso looked him in the eyes and nodded. “Go on,” she said softly. Percy managed to keep eye contact, but it was difficult. His whole body was screaming RUN!!! Percy took a deep breath and continued.
“I’m so,so sorry I didn’t see if the Gods had let you go. I should have found some way to check, really, and I can’t make any excuses, an-” Annabeth squeezed his hand. Calm down. You’re fine, she seemed to say.
So Percy stopped and looked down. Maybe she’ll hit him? Percy waited a moment. Then he waited for a few seconds. Nothing? Percy looked back up. She was crying.
It was ten times worse than her just hitting him. Leo looked as surprised as Percy felt, and he gave Percy a look. Not a ‘that’s it; you’re dead’ look, but more like a ‘woah, what happened there?’ look.
Calypso wiped away one last tear and looked back up at Percy. “You two went to Tartarus, didn’t you? I’m guessing you ran into Aurai, and she,” Calypso nodded to Annabeth, “felt my curse. For that, I apologize greatly. It must have been horrible.”
Annabeth nodded, and Percy saw in her what he sometimes saw in himself, in the mirror. Something broken. But, the craziest thing about that look really was that through the cracks shimmering hope shone.
It shines bright, like a white flag announcing a surrender. And it was okay. Everyone was fine. So the group of four went back to help the oblivious group of 6.
